Thanks to the advances made by the iPhone Dev Team, the iPod Touch 2G is finally jailbreak-able without requiring tethering to your computer or fiddling with boot modes. This is an unofficial redsn0w release for 2.2.1 firmware as the Pwnage and QuickPwn tools haven’t yet incorporated this unlock into the tool flow just yet, but eager iPod Touch owners who don’t want to wait can follow these relatively simple instructions to jailbreak and untether your iPod Touch 2G on 2.2.1 firmware.

  1. Restore your iPod Touch to its pristine factory state.
  2. Windows users can download and install the libusb and c++ redistributable if you don’t have them already (password is “coderetard”).
  3. Download the unofficialsn0w 2.0 package and unzip it somewhere (password is “coderetard”).
  4. Download the iPod Touch 2G 2.2.1 ipsw firmware to the /IPSW folder where you unzipped the unofficialsn0w package.
    ipod-unofficialsn0w-ipsw
  5. Rename the file iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw to OriginalFW.ipsw in the /IPSW folder.
  6. Run the IPSW.bat script by double clicking it (this process may take a while). This is going to attempt to create a custom jailbroken firmware for you in the /IPSW folder. Make sure you renamed the .ipsw correctly in step 5 or this step will fail.
  7. In the /IPSW folder, open jb.ipsw by right-clicking with your favorite zip package explorer like WinRAR or 7-zip and browse in the ipsw file to /Firmware/all_flash/all_flash.n72ap.production.
    ipod-unofficialsn0w-llb
  8. Delete the LLB.n72ap.RELEASE.img3 file in there and replace it with the one in the /IPSW folder. If you’re using WinRAR, this is just a drag and drop from the /IPSW folder into the WinRAR window.
  9. As an alternative manual process to steps 7-8, you can try to add a .zip to the JB.ipsw file so that it is JB.ipsw.zip. Then extract the contents, replace the LLB file, and zip it back up. Then rename the zip back to JB.ipsw. We haven’t tried this to verify it will work, but it’s worth a shot if you don’t want to install WinRAR or 7-zip.
  10. Make sure your iPod Touch 2G is plugged into your computer yet via the USB cable. Then put it into DFU mode by pressing and holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds release the power button but continue to hold home until your computer beeps and detects a DFU recovery device.
  11. Run RUNME.exe located in the root folder of the unofficialsn0w package.
  12. Launch iTunes and shift-click restore to get the browse window for firmware to install. Direct it to your modified JB.ipsw file and you’re done.

After you follow these steps, you will no longer be required to tether your iPod to your computer if you wish to jailbreak it.

DUDE RENAME IT TO OriginalFW not OriginalFW.ipsw

  • Comment from adm_snackbar

If you don’t get JB.ipsw it’s because IPSW.bat did not execute properly. Open a Windows DOS command prompt, go to the directory that contains ipsw.bat, then call it from the command prompt. The output messages should shed more light on the error.

  • Comment from Anonymous

I have the same problem as jason(ipsw.bat opens for a second). I tried doing what adm_snackbar is saying to do, but all i can get to is the command prompt(the black page). What do i do after that.

Anthony, if you are running Windows Vista, first set the installation file to Windows XP compatible. To do this, right click the file and go to properties and then click the Compatibility tab, then choose Windows XP

Help! I cannot shift-click in iTunes for some reason!

    • Comment from Hitwelve

It’s only shift-clicking if you have a Mac. If you have Windows, it’s a right-click.

  • Comment from alexander

    …Never mind… I clicked the wrong button…

  • Comment from Alex

@ Jordan. To make it work when you run IPSW.bat. I had the same problem. Go into IPSW folder. and remove the .ipsw off the file name of your ipod originalFW. IT worked for me :)

Hello. Thanx for the tutorial. One problem though. When I go to shift+click and restore my itouch with the JB.ispw file, i keep getting either error 16-1 or 1604. I’ve gone all over the web to find answers, uninstalled and re-installed itunes, and everything. Is the JB.ispw corrupt or something. If anyone can reply with an answer, please help!

It never shows up on itunes, and wont restart.

I downloaded the firmware 2.2.1 not using quickfreedom, I downloaded it seperately.

I unzipped the files into a folder, now I need to get these files into use.

I use the browse button and direct it to the folder I unzipped, nothing.

Do I need to place these files in a certain folder?

Put about 3 hrs into searching the internet about this, nothing yet.

I have LIBUSB installed, but not the firmware and cannot move forward.

    Any help appreciated.

“the application … was not installed on the ipod … because it could not be verified!”

    help me please :(

  • Comment from karleeCalamity

this takes wayyyy tooooo longgggggg. just download QuickFreedom, and use the simple step by step instruction on the program.

  • Comment from Darek

If message: ipod not found, uninstal libusb, then change file compability as Shayan explans.Don’t close setup window after instalation,so your USB modem will be enable (it worked with me).
If error 1601 comes up, then you must pick wrong file choosing restore source. Follow John instractions, it worked with me too.
    Good luck
