iPhone 2.2.1 QuickPwn 2.2.5 Upgrade Guide

The latest iPhone 2.2.1 firmware was recently unleashed to the world by Apple and just mere days later, the iPhone Dev Team provides the PwnageTool unlocking software. We’ve covered the PwnageTool upgrade steps before, but since QuickPwn 2.2.5 does the same job a lot easier, this guide will show you how to upgrade, jailbreak, and perhaps unlock your beloved Apple iPhone to run on the latest and greatest 2.2.1 firmware.
- Connect your iPhone and start iTunes and you should get a prompt to upgrade your iPhone firmware to 2.2.1.
- Allow iTunes to upgrade your iPhone to the latest 2.2.1 firmware. Don’t worry about the implications (losing jailbreak, unlock) as QuickPwn will take care of this for you. This step is necessary because QuickPwn doesn’t actually upgrade your iPhone. Instead, QuickPwn expects to be pwning the same firmware that your iPhone is on.
- Download QuickPwn 2.2.5 for Windows or Mac. Extract the file and launch the QuickPwn 2.2.5 application. Then follow the prompt and connect your iPhone to your computer via the USB cable. When the blue arrow button lights up, click it.
- QuickPwn is smart enough to detect the firmware ipsw file you downloaded via iTunes (something like C:\Documents and Settings\coderetard\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\ on Windows XP). If it can’t find it for whatever reason, download the 2.2 restore firmware ipsw file for 2G iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw or 3G iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw directly from Apple’s servers. Then browse to the or restore firmware ipsw file you downloaded. After the green checkmark appears, click the blue arrow button.
- On the next page, make sure you select the “Cydia” checkbox. You can check “Installer” and replace logo as desired. If you have a 2G iPhone and wish to unlock it, also make sure to check the “Unlock phone” option as well. Click the arrow button after making your selections.
- If you opted to unlock, you’ll need to download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader binaries. Browse to these in QuickPwn to load them. If you didn’t, you won’t get this screen so you can skip to the next step.
- Now click on the Go button which will bring up a screen with some instructions. Follow them exactly to a tee. Just to prepare, here are the directions: 1) Hold Home for 5 seconds, 2) Hold Home and Power together for 10 seconds, 3) Release Power but continue to hold Home for 30 seconds. Throughout the process these three steps, you DO NOT LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON until after the third step. I didn’t have to hold it anymore after it counted down to 18 seconds left.
- Then sit back and relax while QuickPwn does all the hard work for you, you’ll see some activity on your iPhone screen and hear your computer beep a few times, but when it restarts finally, it’s ready to use.

hi there i currently have running 2.2 on my iphone 3g if i up grade to quickpawn2.5 will i loose all the apps and games i have already downloaded.
I did QuickPwn but never get to step 5. instead, it finishes (reboots phone) before I even get a choice of options. I have 3G 2.2.1, Baseband 02.30.03. What am I doing wrong?

no you wont damage it but it will have to be unlocked again and as of now there is not unlocking software for it
There’re two things that can get updated: the firmware and the baseband. What you’ve heard about is the baseband since 2.2.1 includes a baseband update which is not compatible with yellowsn0w and cannot be unlocked. If you are in contract with AT&T then this isn’t important to you so you can use these steps. Otherwise, you should not upgrade to 2.2.1 unless you can find a 2.2.1 custom firmware which excludes the baseband update (rev. 02.30.03) so you can continue to use an unlocked 3G iPhone.
I updated my iphone 2g (previously unlocked) from itunes and after that i tried running the quickpwn thingy, i had all the necessary files on ma desktop. Quikpwn used all the files and went on the DFU mode directly widout giving the option to unlock. The 1st step in the instruction of the Dfu was a bit different..in between my itunes is opened directly and it says its has detected an ipod..after closing whn i switch over to the Quickpwn it says ..quickpwn is about to run the iphone and it gets stuck here..dnt know wat to do plz help…

Hello: My iPhone 3G is currently running Firmware v2.2 which was Jailbroken and Unlock with Yellowsn0w v0.96.
Cedia is now telling me that there is a v0.97 update for Yellowsn0w
My questions are:
1. Should I update Yellowsn0w 0.97 through Cedia
2. If I update to Firmware v2.2.1 via QuickPwn 2.2.5 using a custom IPSW without the Baseband update, would I loose my Cedia Apps. allready installed on my 3G
3. Do I have to unlok my 3G again using Yellowsn0w 0.97 or would the 3G keep it’s unlock status.
4. Are there any Custom IPSW v2.2.1 files available yet

Cedia is now telling me that there is a v0.97 update for Yellowsn0w. I upgraded it to 0.97. I dont know if it is because of this upgrade or some other reason, when I open the Phone and go to contacts, the app closes abruptly after 3-4 seconds. Has anyone had this problem ?

Hi All,
Major problems, i cannot even get onto QuickPwn. I’m on windows vista 32-bit, my iphone is restored to 2.2.1 but after downloading quickpwn (225-2 from many websites and even 225-1) and unzipping it, i always get “QuickPwn has stopped working”. Ive tried different unzipping programs as well (winzip, winrar and the default windows one). Can anyone help!

I upgraded to 2.2.1 sucessfully, however I notice INSTALLER seems to have only a few packages available. With 2.2 it was full of all the apps. ANy reason for this?

when using 2.25 after restoring to 2.2.1 on a 3g iphone due you need to install the booloaders with qwickpawn? Also, how come the unlock icon did not show up on 2.25 qwickpwn? Hi all, two days ago I made a big mistake. I udated my iPhone from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and suddenly I cannot use my iPhone. iTunes said that my SIM card unrecogniseable and also when I only could made emergency call from iPhone, also I cannot reach the menu bar. What do u mean by that? I follow the steps and the I am trapped in 02.30.03!! My iphone is in contract with AT&T while I’m in Australia.
After I go through all the steps correctly and allowed the iPhone to reboot. It is now stuck on the Apple logo screen and will not budge. It vibrates a couple of times every 5 minutes though. Any idea what I did wrong?
Ahhhh I figured it out! Do not have your AT&T sim card in your iPhone when you do this!
I’m having the same problem as Mike. I went through the process on a 2G phone (2.0 -> 2.21; Cydia, Installer, & Unlock selected) and after the reboot is just sits at the Apple logo and vibrates every few minutes.
I tried Mike’s suggestion of removing the SIM card (even though mine is TMobile) and went through the process again with no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help :)
had the same problem. between software update (2.2.1) and PWN I unlocked the phone…
-recover your iphone:
disconnect cable iphone –> activate itunes –> hold down home button + reconnect iphone –> recover iphone in itunes)
-do not touch iphone!
-do the quick-PWN

I have iphone 3g 2.2.1 I just got today from AT&T website. I downloaded QuickPWN v2.2-1 and then I d/l’d iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw.
I restored my iPhone and proceeded to start jailbreaking. I opened QuickPWN and found the IPSW file and pressed next.. I got the Firmware Error String.
I am using Vista 64. But, I have also used it on a 32 bit WinXP OS as well and had the same problem.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi I have pawned my fone using the steps mentioned above. But firstly i didnt get the UNLOCK PHONE option and after doing all the pawning successfully , It says NO SERVICE. I believe may be the modem firmware i.e. 2.30 which i am using doesnt allow me to use that ? Please comment.
I am running 2.2.1 firmware on my iPhone and I have windows xp. In trying to download quickpwn, my phone always freezes up at the end when it says it is finished and to give phone time to reboot. It stays on a black screen with the apple icon for hours never finishing the reeboot. Also would removing my sim during the process help. I’m with ATT

if you stuck at step 7, restart iphone..after iphone shown the itunes and usb icons (just before it’s lock for ‘emergency calls’), u need to enter DFU mode manually..u can used the combination of home button and power button as per steps 7..

ok what if it just keeps sitting at the last screen where it tells u that its preparing your device and just keeps loading it wont move off (wait for your iphone to connect in recovery mode ? what do i do ? i c no one has left anything in a while but if u read this and no what to do please hit me up cuz i really would like to no what to do everything else has worked up in till the last part witch is fu%#ed up cuz its been sitting there for a while and im starting to think it ain’t gonna move
ok if u get stuck at the end where u r told to hold the home key and stuff if it just sits there and dont do any thing shut your phone off while still on the page turn it on but DO NOT close the page it will bring u back to the page right befor it and have u hit the blue arrow again to start it the last page again this time it should start right away so be ready for it or u will miss it cuz it starts fast after u do that i let my phone sit the for like 2 hours befor i tryed that it was so easy hope i could help some one cuz if u sat there like i did u gotta feel just a dumb as i do lol good luck and hope it sounds easier then the other guy talking about it more up on the page cant really understand him…good luck
