[ # ] How to QuickPwn iPhone to 2.2 Firmware Upgrade Guide
/* Posted November 25th, 2008 at 12:25am *//* Filed under Apple, How-To, Microsoft, Mods, iPhone */

The latest iPhone 2.2 firmware was recently unleashed to the world by Apple and just a mere day later, the iPhone Dev Team provides the PwnageTool unlocking software. We’ve covered the PwnageTool upgrade steps before, but since QuickPwn 2.2 does the same job a lot easier, this guide will show you how to upgrade, jailbreak, and perhaps unlock your beloved Apple iPhone to run on the latest and greatest 2.2 firmware.
For 3G iPhone users, there’s just one note before you begin: do not upgrade to 2.2 firmware if you wish to have a chance to use Pwnage to unlock your iPhone in the future. The 2.2 firmware update will update your iPhone 3G’s baseband software, which may or may not be unlockable. The iPhone Dev Team has been working furiously on a reliable unlock solution for the 3G, but it is based on the old baseband revision that is prior to this 2.2 update. The update can also affect hardware unlocking solutions if you paid for a SIM card unlocker for your 3G. So if you’ve got a 3G, you’re strongly urged not to go this route. Instead, use PwnageTool to create your own custom firmware without the baseband upgrade. refer to this yellowsn0w soft unlock guide for 2.2 firmware and 02.28.00 baseband.
- Upgrade your iTunes to 8.0.2 by launching it and clicking "Download iTunes" below. Or download it and install it manually.
- Allow iTunes to upgrade your iPhone to the latest 2.2 firmware. Don’t worry about the implications (losing jailbreak, unlock) as QuickPwn will take care of this for your. This step is necessary because QuickPwn doesn’t actually upgrade your iPhone. Instead, QuickPwn expects to be pwning the same firmware that your iPhone is on.
- Download QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows or Mac. Extract the file and launch the QuickPwn 2.2 application. Then follow the prompt and connect your iPhone to your computer via the USB cable. When the blue arrow button lights up, click it.
- QuickPwn is smart enough to detect the firmware ipsw file you downloaded via iTunes (something like C:\Documents and Settings\coderetard\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\ on Windows XP). If it can’t find it for whatever reason, download the 2.2 restore firmware ipsw file for 2G iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw or 3G iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw directly from Apple’s servers. Then browse to the or restore firmware ipsw file you downloaded. After the green checkmark appears, click the blue arrow button.
- On the next page, make sure you select the “Cydia” checkbox. You can check “Installer” and replace logo as desired. If you have a 2G iPhone and wish to unlock it, also make sure to check the “Unlock phone” option as well. Click the arrow button after making your selections.
- If you opted to unlock, you’ll need to download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader binaries. Browse to these in QuickPwn to load them. If you didn’t, you won’t get this screen so you can skip to the next step.
- Now click on the Go button which will bring up a screen with some instructions. Follow them exactly to a tee. Just to prepare, here are the directions: 1) Hold Home for 5 seconds, 2) Hold Home and Power together for 10 seconds, 3) Release Power but continue to hold Home for 30 seconds. Throughout the process these three steps, you DO NOT LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON until after the third step. I didn’t have to hold it anymore after it counted down to 18 seconds left.
- Then sit back and relax while QuickPwn does all the hard work for you, you’ll see some activity on your iPhone screen and hear your computer beep a few times, but when it restarts finally, it’s ready to use.

chris:
If you don’t want to lose your apps, I recommend you install AptBackup first.
Edward Chemal:
To get your contacts back sync your phone with iTunes again.
sabi:
On 3G this WILL UPGRADE THE BASEBAND, so do not install it if you wish to do a future software unlock via Pwnage. Otherwise if you are with AT&T and are fine with it and just wish to jailbreak, you can use these steps.

OK I have tried jailbreaking my 3G iPhone 7 times in three days and it wont work. I DO NOT care about a soft unlock so I went to iTunes and updated to 2.2 and downloaded Quickpwn 2.2 for Windows and ran it. It gets to the Prepareing iPhone screen and freezes saying ‘Wiat while iPhone connects in Recovery Mode” but no steps appear. I have tried putting in recovery mode myself manually, I have tried waiting for it to unfreeze itself, I have tried updating services running through windows as suggested in another blog and nothing works every time I try to jailbreak it freezes at that screen and I have to restore it in iTunes which is irritating as hell after the 5th time. CAN SOMEONE HELP! and by help I mean a solution that works not a bunch of comments about how you got it to work fine and cant see why im having a problem…CUS THAT DOESNT HELP ME.

I’ve just followed stage 1 (updated my iphone to 2.2 via itunes) on my previously PWN’d phone, and it works perfectly without running QuickPWN! Itunes says it’s running 2.2, it appears to have the 2.2 features (Google maps etc updated) and is running T-mobile without issue. I daredn’t restart the Iphone now!

ok I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I DID WRONG! i followed the steps precisely as they are laid out here. quikpwn detected my 2.2 update from itunes and i used that, the i did the timing steps properly, everything fine…then it got to the finish screen where it says that it appeared to be successful and i should wait for it to reboot. so i waited and waited and about 10-15 minutes later it was still on the apple logo reboot screen. i restored back to factory 2.2 and im ready to start again but before i do could somebody PLEASE tell me what happened and more importantly how to fix it?

ok this is sorta an update to my previous post… ok, i tried 2 MORE times and still doesnt work! the first and second time i followed the instructions exactly and used my 2.2 firmware from my itunes update, the third time i downloaded a copy of the firmware from the link on this page.
all three times everything looked to be running smoothly, then after all the graphics and animations on my phone were done i got the apple logo reboot screen and quickpwn said the process appeared successful and to wait for the phone to restart with the new modifications. but it never restarts! all three times it gets stuck at the reboot screen with the apple logo.
im just installing cydia, not installer, no unlocking, and not changing the logos.
when it came time to hold the buttons, i did it precisely with no mistakes, and didnt release the home button until after the third step was complete(after 15 secs the 1st time, 10 secs the 2nd, and 9 the 3rd)
i have a first gen 2G iphone and i used the proper firmware everytime.
can someone help?
Comment from michael [December 13, 2008, 1:49 pm]
i just got mine and i had to restore it in itunes and re jailbreak it
Comment from Jim [December 13, 2008, 6:58 pm]
When I ran QuickPwn, it went from the screen allowing me to select my device to the one asking if I wanted to replace boot logos, and then started building the ipsw file. I did not get to a screen that allowed me to select “unlock” or “Add Cydia.” When the process was complete, I didn’t have any service bars, and can’t make calls.

I’ve tried this TEN times yet quickpwn wont work for me. I’ve jailbroken my phone twice before but this wont work and its the only one for firmware 2.2
I keep getting help up at Uploading Exploit Bootloader and have done what every guide has said to do. Restored several times. The works.
SOMEONE HELP PLEASE

Looks like you’ll have to download someone’s custom 2.2 firmware made with Pwnage tool for your iPhone. The steps are similar to the 2.1 upgrade guide.
