Have you been looking to download the famed K-Lite Codec Pack for Mac OS? Sorry to say, but no such thing exists. The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a famous collection of video and audio codecs that, together, can play just about any sort of media file on your computer. The elephantine K-Lite Mega Codec Pack comes loaded with even more stuff like different media players, RealPlayer and QuickTime Alternatvie, and more. But what about on the Mac? You’ll actually be relieved to hear that bloated bundles like the K-Lite Codec Pack aren’t necessary for your Mac.

Instead of the K-Lite Codec Pack, Mac users can download Perian, the "swiss-army knife for QuickTime." Perian is a small 2.6 MB download, unlike the K-Lite Codec Pack which weighs in at 14.2 MB for just the basic version. Instead of requiring you to install extra media players like VLC or Media Player Classic, Perian simply enhances QuickTime to pack a bigger punch, allowing it to handle most popular video and audio encoding formats out there.

Perian handles:

  • File formats: AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW
  • Video types: MS-MPEG4 v1 & v2, DivX, 3ivx, H.264, Sorenson H.263, FLV/Sorenson Spark, FSV1, VP6, H263i, VP3, HuffYUV, FFVHuff, MPEG1 & MPEG2 Video, Fraps, Snow, NuppelVideo, Techsmith Screen Capture, DosBox Capture
  • Audio types: Windows Media Audio v1 & v2, Flash ADPCM, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), and MPEG Layer I & II Audio, True Audio, DTS Coherent Acoustics, Nellymoser ASAO
  • AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
  • Subtitle support for SSA/ASS and SRT

Installation is a breeze. Simply download Perian 1.1.2, mount the .dmg file, then double click on the Swiss Army knife icon to launch the installer. If at any point you need clearer directions, simply watch Perian’s install video.

I was impressed with QuickTime’s quickness, as if it were naturally capable of playing these traditionally "PC-ish" video formats. Perian was able to play every video I tried to throw at it, and is definitely a must-have for every Mac OS user.
