The Adobe Flash player plugin is widely used all over the Internet, so it’s almost crucial that you install the Google Chrome Flash plugin if you wish to maximize your browser experience. If you’ve been prompted to install the Flash plugin but nothing happens, then you’ll need to manually install it yourself by downloading the Flash plugin from Adobe and playing a few tricks to install it into Google Chrome. No need to fear however because the installation procedure is pretty straightforward and you’ll have a Chrome Flash plugin enabled browser in no time.

  1. Download the Flash player xpi for Windows.
  2. Add a .zip extension to the file. It should now be: flashplayer-win.xpi.zip
  3. Extract the contents and copy two files “flashplayer.xpt” and “NPSWF32.dll” (indicated in the screenshot below) over to C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins in XP or C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins in Vista (thank you Derek), making sure to change ‘user’ to your Windows login name. You can avoid having to unhide hidden files in Windows Explorer simply by copying and pasting the directory path provided above into the path bar.
    flash-xpi_extract
  4. Restart Google Chrome, then see if you can watch a YouTube video to see if it worked. Or just come back to this page.

    Excellent! Worked perfect!

Nevertheless, I had to create manually the folder “Plugins” but after that and following your steps ONE BY ONE, it worked like a charm.

Hooray! This has been driving me crazy. I had to create a plugins folder, but then it worked. Not to be confused with the “Plugin Data” folder that’s buried under the User Data, in case anyone else chases that path. ;)

Brasil People!

hurrrrry…….excellent job..its working fantastic….i have not created the “plugins folder” as said …..and copied both the files at the following location ..
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application

    its working smoothly…

  • Comment from Kamalpreet

Thank you so much for the instructions. It worked and i didn’t have to reboot my computer. The search for this page drove me crazy. But once again thank you!

  • Comment from Pete

This does not help – although interestingly – when I went looking for the folder that I should have had on my system -

    C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins

The “Plugins” folder did not exist. So I added a folder with that name to the applications folder and then added the downloaded files as instructed. But nothing changed.

I should note that my problem with the flash player and chrome is isolated to one web site – that of Bank of America and its application “Shopsafe” which allows you to get single use credit card numbers when shopping on the internet or elsewhere. I believe that the flashplayer works for every other application, but I am not sure how to test that – except I never get the error message except on that one site.

So – it may be that it is just the designers of this one web site have a code that Chrome has trouble with…..just a guess.

  • Comment from stu

if we didnt have flash on Chrome at the start of this, how would we follow your youtube link

    • Comment from Jessi W

Stu, if you did not have flash player on Chrome in the beginning, the YouTube page would load, but the video would not be able to play, and you would be told ‘an additional plugin is required to view some media on this page’ or something of the sort.

I think this may have changed (Or my experience was different because i changed my %ProgramFiles% to = D:\Program Files”)

I tried putting these 2 files in many folders such as:
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Plugin Data
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Plugin Data\Adobe Flash Movie
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Plugin Data\Adobe Flash
    C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Plugin Data\Flash

But finally I broke down and did what made sense to me and tried the one that worked:
    %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins

I’m just going to make a self extracting rar file to remember this one. I can update the 2 files later. …hopefully by then I wont have to.

    • Comment from Jim

worked a treat, cheers. had to create tthe plugin directory

  • Comment from John Houk

HMM just a thought. maybe this is different cuz my chrome was installed by GOOGLE PACK! DOH!

  • Comment from John Houk

Hey can’t someone just make a batch file to do this? using ftp type commands
    download the current flashplayer-win.xpi
    rename it
..isin’t there a command to do something if a specified file exists..
xcopy to the correct directory based on the existence of the Applications folder.

Hmm i dono bout the exists command, i can’t find it. You can probably do this EZ in some other script language.

  • Comment from Judy

This didn’t work for me. Perhaps there is a different version of flash installed on my computer? I have the latest (ie v 10). I’m a little confused as to how this installs flash for chrome. I also had to put in a Plugins folder.

I don’t see any feedback to those of us where this did not work.

  • Comment from Sheila

I loved! It works very well.

The only different thing that i had to do is to create the folder `Plugins`.

    Thank you for the solution.

I run windows vista and the paths you wrote doesn’t worked.
    After many tries i used
    C\program files\google\chrome\application\plugins
I had to create the plugins folder but now it finally works!

  • Comment from matthew

    yes it worked THANK YOU

  • Comment from N

I dropped those two files in but it STILL doesn’t work? What did I do wrong?

  • Comment from 10-Q

Worked perfectly in windows 2000, too. Thanks

  • Comment from BobC

I have XP and put the 2 files into:
    Programs\Google\Chrome|Application\Plugins
I had to created the Plugins folder. I restarted Google and it worked immediately!

Maybe it searches for these plugins in different places & maybe it depends on the Version of Chrome? I did NOT have the Application folder in the path:
Documents & Settings\user\localsettings\application\Google\Chrome\Application which is why I chose the Programs path.

My Chrome is V 1.0.154.48. Does EVERYBODY have to go through this to run Flash in Chrome? When will a newer version that fixes things like this be available? A lot of people will get turned off by shortcomings like this.

    Thanks for the tips!

    Bob

What do you do if you are running Windows 7, I cant find the plugin folder, this is as far as I can get in Windows Explorer: C:\Users\daniel\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application

    What do I do?

You’re the bomb! Worked like a charm. Running Windows 7 beta (build 7077) 64-bit version. The only thing I had to do was to manually create the “Plugins” folder.

    C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\Plugins

I would like to point out that on my computer the “AppData” folder was set to hidden and read only. I fixed this by searching for AppData in the search section on the taskbar, right clicking the file that came up, and deselected hidden.

  • Comment from Pen

    Cool Man!!
    It work!!
    thank a lot!!

  • Comment from frustrated

Unnecessarily complicated. Should be able to download and go like any other software.

In any case, it didn’t work anyway as there is no such folders as ‘Local Settings’ ‘Google’ ‘Chrome’ ‘Application’ ‘Plugins’ …that makes it pretty much impossible then.
