[ # ] How to Upgrade Pwned iPhone with 2.1 Custom Firmware IPSW (Windows)

/* Posted September 16th, 2008 at 12:27am */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, Mods, iPhone */

The Pwnage Tool 2.1 and QuickPwn tools were released over the past weekend, allowing Mac users to create custom firmware IPSWs and pwn their iPhones. Unfortunately, without WinPwn or QuickPwn for Windows, Windows users did not have an option to upgrade to v2.1 firmware unless they were on already on AT&T and did not require unlocking or activation (that is they only needed to jailbreak on 2.1). But for the other half who are not with AT&T, it just wasn’t a viable option. We’re here to tell you that actually there is. Since the Pwnage 2.1 tool was released, some very generous people have made available custom 2.1 IPSW firmwares for 2G and 3G iPhones. What does this mean for Windows users with already pwned 2G iPhones? It means you can freely upgrade to 2.1 firmware without worrying about your iPhone getting locked again. 3G iPhone owners, this procedure is more geared towards 2G iPhones so you might want to check out our 3G 2.1 upgrade guide first.

The Pwnage Tool performs two main jobs: 1) create a custom firmware ipsw to allow jailbroken apps, and 2) pwn your iPhone to allow use with any GSM provider. Since the first job’s been done by Mac users providing pre-made custom 2.1 firmware, and the second job’s been done for you before, you’re actually closer than you think to enjoying firmware v2.1 iPhone bliss…

  1. Download the v2.1 custom firmware IPSW for 2G or 3G iPhones or from BitTorrent (2G).
  2. Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable.
  3. Upgrade to iTunes 8
  4. Disregard any message from iTunes to upgrade your iPhone firmware.
  5. Sync your iPhone to make a backup of its current state (contacts, music… etc).
  6. Enter DFU mode by holding down the Power and Home buttons for exactly 10 seconds. After the 10 seconds, let go of the Power button but continue to hold down the Home for another 10 to 20 seconds until your computer detects a USB device (you may see a popup regarding a “DFU device” or “recovery device”). When Windows has recognized the iPhone is in DFU you can stop release the Home button. Note that the screen will be black the entire time as this occurs.
  7. iTunes will detect the iPhone is in DFU mode and force you to perform a restore.
  8. Hold down the shift key and click on the “Restore” button.
  9. Browse for the custom 2.1 firmware ipsw you downloaded and load it onto your iPhone
  10. After the process completes you will be running on v2.1 firmware
Let us know if DFU mode worked for you or not, we tried it in that order before getting it to work so maybe DFU isn’t necessary.

Thanks for all the confirmations.

My Iphone won’t ring and I’m told my best option is to downgrade all the way, and proceed to upgrade. I’m not sure if there is anything special to doing this? Do you have any guides on the subject?

I am getting Error 1403 also and no one can tell me what is means!! I am going crazy here. I have exausted 2 pages of google 1403 searches and plenty people have the issue but no one answers or explains the problem. Does anyone know what this error 1403 is? Is Apple up to its own tricks again?
Thank you all for existing this community of Iphone hackers is phenominal!!!!!

Comment from Cianuro [September 16, 2008, 6:52 pm]

Neither option works… Neither update nor restore works with the Custom IPSW file downloaded from Bitorrent. You get erros 1600 or 1403. I even tried Pwning the itunes with it but it just messes up the phone, keeping it in the apple logo after boot. I believe DFU mode is not needed as I tried it the first time and the iphone went back to normal, as if I had done nothing to it.

Comment from Cianuro [September 16, 2008, 6:56 pm]

If anyone gets stuck in the apple logo, press and hold the Power and Home buttons at the same time. Once the screen goes black (don’t wait 10 secs), depress the power button while still holding the home button until you see the iTunes logo with the USB cable under it.

I’ve done this in restore mode only, and it works…I did not do the DFU thing….

My iPHONE is now upgraded from firmware 2.0.1 now on firmware 2.1
Unlocked and Jailbroken…

 Comment from J-Rich [September 16, 2008, 9:22 pm]

Does this method of updating, using a pre pwnd firmware (2.1) on a pwnd 2.0.2 3g phone with itunes 8 update the phones baseband? I currently use ATT but wanted to keep the option open.

Also does this method erase all apps (appstore + jailbrake apps)? and should you back up with itunes 8 prior to the uploading of the custom firmware.

Also does RECOVERY mode keep more data on the phone that DFU mode, or is there no problem with loss of data when restoring.

Thanks!

 Comment from Emul8r [September 16, 2008, 11:10 pm]

I couldn’t get anything to work on PC. I had to use my wife’s Mac to do a fresh firmware update with iTunes 8.

Now I can’t get my iTunes on PC to see the phone. It does show up on the system and in the PC Manage Panel.

 Comment from adm_snackbar [September 16, 2008, 11:22 pm]

Upgrading with the custom firmware won’t upgrade your baseband, that’s why an unlocked iPhone will continue to be unlocked through the upgrade. As always, all jailbroken apps will disappear, but a iTunes sync will bring back everything else including App Store apps.

Comment from Anthony [September 16, 2008, 11:23 pm]

Worked for me. Didn’t have to DFU. Just installed iTunes8, backed up my phone. Shift+Click restore and popped in a ipsw someone made on a mac.
For those wondering, I’m using Windows Vista and had a pwned iPhone 2g v2.0.1

Comment from khurram [September 17, 2008, 3:36 am]

So it worked successfully. I used ZiPhone to get into recovery mode and it went smooth…

Step 1: Grab ZiPhone to get into Recovery Mode easily. You can download the latest version of ZiPhone from here.

Step 2: Run ZiPhone & jump your iPhone into NORMAL Recovery mode (available via advanced settings area in ZiPhone) — This is the most straightforward way to get it into the proper restore mode.

Step 3: In iTunes Shift+Click the Restore button and find your custom IPSW firmware file.

Step 4: Wait for the restore to complete. — You should see bootneuter automatically come up.

Indeed, restore directly from iTunes 8 with the Custom Firmware linked above and all works just fine.

iPhone 2G (not AT&T) pwned (through Windows) with 2.0.2 to 2.1

Comment from Nick [September 17, 2008, 2:57 pm]

I kept on getting error 6 using the firmware above. Any ideas what would cause that? I think I have to unlock my Ipod all over again, but I’m not exactly sure how seeing as how I’ll have to update to 2.1 firmware. Is there a guide to unlocking a phone already on 2.1 firmware?

Thanks

I originally Jailbreaked my Iphone 3g with O2 with Firmware 2.0.2 using QuickPwn.

Also does all the apps already install stay on it, what about Cydia and Installer?

Can anyone confirm if the above works with NON AT&T 3g Iphone?

THANKS

Question, I see everyone on here was either on 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 when they did the shift-restore that worked. Well, I have a 1.1.4, 2G, AT&T phone so will this work for me or do I need to update to 2.x then do the shift-restore with the custom 2.1?

Comment from JonG [September 18, 2008, 7:18 am]

Oh, I did not mention that I jailbroke my phone with winpwn, so I has been jailbroken with winpwn I just want to know if I should update to 2.x then try the above method or just try the above method on my winpwned 1.1.4?

The only thing I see are people who were on a JB, 2G or 3G, running FW 2.x. Before I try to update to 2.x then try this method I was wondering if I could go from my winpwned 1.1.4, 2G AT&T straight to the 2.1 CFW by simply using shift-restore? Here is another website siting they did the same thing as most people here are saying but again, everyone seems to be on 2.x, not 1.x. It would be a pain to have to update to 2.x then to 2.1 JBroken when I could just go straight to JB 2.1. How to Upgrade Pwned iPhone with 2.1 Custom Firmware IPSW (Windows) | Code Retard [...]

1403 here as well…

Works perfectly fine on 3G iPhone.. originally was on 2.0.2 jailbroken via WinPwn.. followed the instructions exactly (minus the syncing/backing up) and 2.1 is working perfectly fine. I used a custom f/w downloaded from another site because i wanted a bigger root partition size.

Comment from Jamie [September 19, 2008, 12:36 am]

I have an already jailbroken iphone 3g (I used Winpwn 2.5) and now when I follow the directions to a T (trying to only update to firmware 2.1 w/out losing what I’ve downloaded) and I get up to the step of shift + restore and I too get the error message: 1403

Any advice?

Thx!

Comment from iphoneuser [September 19, 2008, 12:43 pm]

well with all the news on 2.1 and the fear of losing my jailbroken status and being on windows I still wanted to try and get 2.1 on my 2.0.2 phone under windows and retain my jailbroken status.

well… the about steps work perfectly no DFU mode needed…..

after the shift restore, select the custom ispw , let itunes 8 do its job the phone rebooted clean as a the day you bought it ,but with 2 very important icons. Installer and Cydia.

I ran the restore iphone from backup next as prompted and all my settings and music was restored.

Next was to run aptbackup which is VERY nice Cydia backup tool, it restored all my 3rd party apps and were back in business.

I Did all the steps as indicated everrything worked fine but when I ran arestore to get all contacts back it also took me back to version 2.0???
how do I restore conatcts mail etc but stay in vers 2.1??

Comment from Edward Chemal [September 20, 2008, 9:54 am]

I dis everything as described but after it restarts my iphone it says I am still running version 2.0???
Can someone shed some light ??

Download the v2.1 custom firmware IPSW for 2G or 3G iPhones or from BitTorrent (2G).
Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB cable.
Sync your iPhone to make a backup of its current state (contacts, music… etc).

Hold down the shift key and click on the “Restore” button.
Browse for the custom 2.1 firmware ipsw you downloaded and load it onto your iPhone
After the process completes you will be running on v2.1 firmware

Alas. When shift-clicking the restore button in iTunes I did not receive a browse button. My phone is not restored to a clean 2.1 version and iTunes does not allow access to it anymore.

Now I’m up for another quest. Does anyone have a link to a working recipe for pwning a 2G 2.1 phone?

I had the 1.0.2 firmware and baseband, which i had unlocked with a LOT of trouble so i was hesitant about upgrading. Finally gave in and these steps worked like a charm.

Comment from Elabjer [October 20, 2008, 12:15 am]

Yet another success story… went straight from 1.1.4 to 2.1 w/ no problems, quick & easy :)
The only unresolved issue is that I’m unable to connect to Youtube. I don’t really need this funtionality, but if somebody has the solution… ?
Thanks very much for your guide,
Best regards.
