iphone 3g stand How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)

Yesterday the latest iPhone firmware v2.1 was released and it didn’t take long for the iPhone Dev Team to come up with the new Pwnage 2.1 Tool to jailbreak the 2.5G and 3G iPhones. Unfortunately for us Windows users, there isn’t a solution out unless you can get a hold of a custom 2.1 ipsw file from a Mac user. The steps we are about to present work on Windows but only for AT&T-activated iPhones only, and won’t work if you want to unlock, it just works to jailbreak.

Update: If you’ve previously pwned your iPhone (that is, you’ve used Pwnage, QuickPwn, WinPwn or any tool like that at some point in your life), you can actually upgrade to 2.1 firmware quite easily and without any tools except iTunes 8. Heck, it’s a lot easier than this guide so you may want to check it out.

Update 2: QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows is finally out so we recommend following the revised 2.1 upgrade guide instead. Trust us it’s a lot easier.

  1. Download the latest 2.1 IPSW firmware from Apple for 2.5G and 3G
  2. Launch iTunes 7.7 and let it upgrade itself to version 8. Otherwise download it yourself from us.
    • itunes8 install How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  3. Allow iTunes 8 to update your iPhone with the latest v2.1 firmware update.
  4. Uninstall iTunes 8.
  5. Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support too
    • apple mobile uninstall How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  6. Install iTunes 7.7
  7. Download QuickPwn v1.2.0 with 2.1 ipsw support
  8. Install and run QuickPwn following the steps in our 2.0.2 upgrade guide. The difference will be you select the 2.1 restore firmware ipsw file that you downloaded in step 1.
  9. Download TotalCommander and the T-PoT addon for it.
  10. Install TotalCommander
  11. To install the T-PoT addon simply launch TotalCommand and use the left window to browse to the T-PoT.1.1.zip file where you saved it and double click it to install it.
    • top install How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  12. Make sure your iPhone is on and still connected to your computer via the USB cable. Use TotalCommander to browse to your iPhone file system by first clicking -/- on the drop down menu with all the drives. Then double click on [T-PoT].
    • tpot open How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  13. You are now in your iPhone’s file system. Use TotalCommander to navigate to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework. Just in case things don’t work out, make sure you save your existing MobileInstallation file simply by dragging the file over to the other window.
    • mobileinstall save How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  14. Now replace the MobileInstallation file on your iPhone with this patched one for v2.1 firmware.
    • mobileinstall replace How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  15. Now use TotalCommander to navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/ and backup your existing com.apple.mobile.installation.plist file first, then delete it
    • mobileinstall delete How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)
  16. Reboot your iPhone. Now ponder why you went through all this trouble (like us). Enjoy!

  • Comment from mec

well this is all bullshit check the dev team website someone is using there name and i just fucked up my iphone and it didn’t work for me….

  • Comment from timmy

worked for me, and to change the icon on your boot up, you need to ad a png file with you use the pwnage tool

  • Comment from DarkSy

    Works like a charm.

    Note:
The installer and Cydia does not appear until the MobileInstall file is replaced and the iPhone is rebooted.

  • Comment from Mike

Do I need to pwn the phone all over again to get a boot logo?

  • Comment from vishwa

hi..i use an US made iphone 2G in India which was unlocked using zibri’s app. Software version is 1.1.4. If i upgrade now, it’ll get locked to AT&T. would I be able to unlock it?

  • Comment from cutifight

thank a lot. I have just completed

  • Comment from Malik

Getting message telling me that iTunes can’t use “My iPhone” (which is the profile name I originally gave it” because it requires version 8.0 or later. Any suggestions?

  • Comment from Chaz

The instructions work just fine. We did the whole process about 3 times. Make sure when using Quickpwn to hold and release the Power and Home buttons exactly as you are told. The last 2 steps are very important, until your upgrade the MobileInstallation file and delete the the plist file, you won’t see Installer and Cydia. Good luck

  • Comment from greg

I got the same message as malik. Won’t let iPhone work with 7.7 tells me to download iTunes 8. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Comment from dOGHAIR

I have the same question as greg and Malik.
I would like to reinstall some of the ipas I have. Has anyone got itunes 7.7 to do this?
Has anyone installed itunes 8 after updating to the new fw and been able to install ipas?
    Thankyou for the guide…

  • Comment from dOGHAIR

    …an update from me,
    I got ipas to install.
    I installed itunes 8
I was able to get ipas to work only after I installed a free app from the appstore.

  • Comment from Jhakir

Hey does it delete all your data from your iPhone when you do this?

  • Comment from AJ

No, Jhakir, it does not delete your data. It will remove all your Cydia/Installer apps, which you’ll have to reinstall, but none of your pictures, SMS messages, VMs, contacts, music or videos will be touched. nor will any apps installed from iTunes.

  • Comment from WJ

    a) Install Poof if BossPrefs was hidden install BossPrefs if Poof was hidden. Either of these can completely unhide all your apps. If both were used and hidden then move to B.

    b) If settings is available, run that. Enable restrictions, disable restrictions. All your apps will be visible. If settings was hidden, move to C.

    c) SSH into the iPhone with scp or ssh. If you don’t know how, use this guide. Navigate yourself over to /var/mobile/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.springboard.plist. Respring your iPhone by typing “killall SpringBoard” into SSH or, if you don’t know how to do that, just reboot. All your hidden apps will be visible.

  • Comment from Malik

Unable to sync with iTunes 7.7 or 8 now. With 7 it tells me that my fw requires 8 and with 8 it tells me it can’t read the contents of my phone and I need to restore to factory settings.

also Total Commander would not let me copy the patched MobileInstalltion file after it let me delete the original. I back it up but TC still won’t let me put it back…says “please turn write protection off”

    This sucks hard!

  • Comment from Dan

Read these instructions they will simplify things: http://www.thedanosphere.com/?p=107

  • Comment from Jerry

Work great, able to use cydia and other apps now. Thx alot. By the way, DONT try it unless you are with ATT!

  • Comment from Jesse

Worked great. Thank you. Can you more clearly explain how one changes the boot logo AFTER completing the jailbreak?

    MANY Thanks!

  • Comment from Just Me

Thanks for the great instructions. Looks like my iphone 3G is now 2.1 Jailbroken. It removed a couple of apps that I installed when it was a JB 2.0.2, but i’ll try it out to see if I see anything bizzare. The only thing I don’t like is that my boot and restore screens are blank right now :( Will have to jailbreak with WinPwn again when it becomes available for 2.1

  • Comment from Malik

Hmmmmm. So nobody else is having any problems getting Total Commander to allow you to replace the MobileInstallation file with the patched one? Keeps telling me “remove write protection please.”

  • Comment from Malik

Oh Duuuuh! My bad. I re-read the instructions very carefully and it worked fine. Sorry for the dumbassness. Thanks for the help.

Diskaid works MUCH better than total commander, you don’t need a trial and no error messages when replacing files.

I’m also not getting the boot logo, would be nice to have a tutorial on how to get it back.

  • Comment from huey

Works perfectly fine on 3G iPhone.. originally was on 2.0.2 jailbroken via WinPwn.. followed the instructions exactly (minus the syncing/backing up) and 2.1 is working perfectly fine. I used a custom f/w downloaded from another site because i wanted a bigger root partition size.

  • Comment from huey

my bad, this comment is in relation to the ‘quicker’ method mentioned at http://www.coderetard.com/2008/09/16/how-to-upgrade-pwned-iphone-with-21-custom-firmware-ipsw-windows/

But phone camera resolution is very low and YouTube videos are also playing with very low picture quality it seem like its screen resolution is 256 pixels or less then that and colour quality is less then 16 bit. Is there any way that we can improve the display settings as well as camera settings then please let me know!

This tutorial totally messed up my iphone, everything went ok, the quickpwn process was ok, I got into dfu mode as i should have, with the new device popping up, BUT after quickpwn was done, I noticed that the pineapple logo was still on my iphone, with the progress wheel spinning, then the logo dissapeared while the process wheel still was on, and then, finally after like 3 minutes of spinning, the phone turned off by itseld. THE PROBLEM IS that now when I boot it up, the apple logo is on for like 2 minutes, than the progress wheel starts spinning for like an other 2 minutes in the middle of the screen, like on top of the apple logo, and, when it’s done spinning IT HANGS and stays like that for ever, and finally reboots with a white screen only to go into the same circle again……….. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
