How to Fix YouTube Activation in iPhone 2.0.2 Firmware

If you followed our guide on upgrading to 2.0.2 and have also followed our 2.0.1 guide closely, you’ll notice there wasn’t any nice easy option to perform the YouTube activation fix with 2.0.2. That’s a limitation of QuickPwn which we used to upgrade to 2.0.2 firmware but fortunately not an unsolvable problem. If you encounter this error:

You must first connect to iTunes with an Internet connection to enable YouTube.

you can activate YouTube without going through iTunes on a jailbroken phone simply by SSH and FTP on your iPhone and “fixing” things up a bit.

  1. Download this package with activated YouTube files and extract the contents (3 files) somewhere.
  2. Install the OpenSSH app on your iPhone (find it through Cydia).
  3. Install the BossPrefs app on your iPhone to control SSH (also through Cydia). Enable SSH after you install it.
  4. Install the Insomnia app on your iPhone to keep the wireless connection alive (through Cydia). Turn it on after you install it.
  5. Get your iPhone connected to your wireless network and find out your iPhone’s IP address.
    • iphone ip address
  6. FTP to your iPhone and log in as user “root” with password “alpine.”
  7. Once you have FTP’ed to your iPhone, browse to /private/var/root/Library/Lockdown/
  8. Replace the existing three files in the Lockdown directory with the fixed ones you just downloaded.
  9. Delete the folder “pair_records”
  10. Set the permissions on Lockdown to 644 with your FTP application (on FileZilla FTP client you right click on the Lockdown folder and select “File Attributes…”).
  11. Restart your iPhone

Test it out, if it worked you’ll be well on your way to seeing what brilliant skit the Duke Improv team is presenting… or what West St. Paul looks like.

this thing works on mac or win?

  • Comment from zoidfreud

I think it works on both. The only diff betweenthe two is what FTP program u use to get into your iPhones filesystem

  • Comment from Klaus

It worked for me only after i set the permissions to 444 on data_ark.plist. Hope this does not ruin anything else.

    Anyways, thanks

  • Comment from jeff

I don’t know why but permission 444 on data_ark.plist worked for me too. it didn’t work before…

Are you both 3G iPhone owners?

  • Comment from David Ortez

For some reason I can not login via SSH. I have done it in the past so I know the steps in fact I even saved the setting in my FTP client.

I have installed Open SSH and Insomnia per the intructions but I still am rejected. Any ideas? Do I need BSD Subsystem or any other program?

I have an iPhone 1st Generation running on 2.1 firmware that was J/U/A via Pwnage Tool.

    I figured it out:

I had to log in via terminal (located in Utilities)

I typed the following command to connect: “ssh root@999.99.9.999” (Replace 999.99.9.999 with your IP address.

Then I got an error in Terminal that stated:

WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!

So, I then typed: “rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts”

It will then ask you if you want to trust the connection and ask you for the password. The you are good to go!

Well even after following the steps, I could not get it to work with a first generation iPhone running 2.1 and iTune 8.0

    Hi,

I just followed the method above but now my iPhone seems semi-bricked. When it comes up it shows the screen requiring connection to iTunes where I can only make emergency calls and that’s it. When iTunes start it asks me to enter the passcode on the iPhone but I can’t do that either…
Any idea what to do next? Any way to somehow make this work again?
This is an iPhone 3G. I think it’s running ver 2.1 and was jailbroken earlier…

    Thanks!!

Try to perform a restore on your iPhone through iTunes and see if that solves the problem. Then try these steps again if YouTube activation is still an issue.
