[ # ] How to Upgrade iPhone to 2.0.2 Firmware with QuickPwn
/* Posted August 28th, 2008 at 8:14pm *//* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

Apple quietly released the 2.0.2 update to iPhone firmware about two weeks ago with only a mysterious “bug fixes” as the sole release note. I had been on 2.0.1 firmware for a few weeks with the only problem being App Store app ghost icons that started to appear during app updates. Thinking that 2.0.2 might be the solution to my problem, with QuickPwn frontend GUI now out and especially with such a great name - QuickPwn: it must be quick! - I decided to make the leap of faith. I’d also read that I’d be able to do an upgrade without a restore, allowing me to keep my current jailbroken apps. Let me just say the process was not really all that quick and I wasn’t able to do it without a restore (after all, you only get one try). So if you are having a lot of problems on 2.0.1 or just want to live on the edge and don’t mind losing all your settings by doing yet another restore, then follow this guide to upgrade your iPhone to the latest 2.0.2 firmware.
Update: Tried again with a different iPhone without needing to do a restore. Simply allow the upgrade to 2.0.2 in iTunes when prompted and ignore any error messages. Then proceed from step 8.
- To be completely on the same page, I’d recommend first getting yourself on 2.0.1 firmware since that is a known state to start from.
- Download the 2.0.2 restore ipsw (5C1) for 2.5G or 3G iPhones. (Note: choose the correct one because they are different!)
- Download QuickPwn GUI 1.20 and extract the zip (there is no need to install). Don’t use QuickPwn 1.50, it doesn’t work when you try to load it the IPSW file.
- Connect your iPhone (powered on) to your computer.
- Launch iTunes 7.7.
- Shift-click on the restore button and browse to the 2.0.2 IPSW file you just downloaded.
- After the upgrade (about 20 minute wait for me) your iPhone will be running on 2.0.2 software but it will complain about your iPhone needing activation or an unlocked SIM. No worries - QuickPwn to the rescue!
- Leaving iTunes on, launch QuickPwn by opening the folder where you extracted it and double clicking QuickPwnGUI1.20.exe
- Select your device. Click the next arrow.
- On the next page, click browse and load the 2.0.2 IPSW firmware you just downloaded. Then click next arrow.
- On the next page, make sure you select the “Cydia” checkbox. You can check “Installer” and replace logo as desired.
- Now click on the Go button which will bring up a DOS window with some instructions.
- You’ll eventually get to a prompt to turn off your iPhone.
- Turn off your iPhone (hold power, slide to power off), then type “y” to contiune. Don’t disconnect your iPhone.
- You will be instructed on how to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Read it through to give yourself a refresher and ask yourself, “Are you ready to begin?” Once you hit “y” you will get a 5 second countdown. YOU DON’T NEED TO DO ANYTHING YET. Let it count down to 0, then start the entire DFU procedure by holding the power button for 5 seconds, then pressing Home while continuing to hold Power for a 10 second count down, and finally releasing Power but continuing to hold Home for 30 seconds. For me, it counted down to about 22 seconds (meaning only 8 seconds passed) after which the computer detected the iPhone was in DFU mode. When this happens, you don’t need to hold anything down anymore and the countdown will terminate.
- You’ll see a couple tasks execute on the DOS windows and the progress. Let it work its magic and once it finishes, you will have a pwned jailbroken iPhone running 2.0.2!
- During the process you will get some error messages from iTunes. Yawn and ignore.
- If you don’t get your network provider signal, you need to downgrade the baseband to version 4.6 which is unlockable. Install BootNeuter from Cydia and set the settings as shown. Then hit the Flash button.
Troubleshooting:
YouTube doesn’t work: FTP to your iPhone and replace a few files. It’s covered in our YouTube activation guide.

If you need to unlock the phone after this procedure you have to downgrade the baseband by installing BootNeuter from Cydia and following step 12 in this guide.

Install BootNeuter 2.0 from Cydia to downgrade the baseband to 4.6 or 3.9, both of which are unlockable (4.6 saves on battery versus 3.9). Then flash with the settings in step 18.

You’ll have to clarify why Cydia “failed to do so.”

if your iphone is already 2.1 then dont do those steps. simply continue on without uninstalling 8 and installing 7.7
