Wall Street Journal reports that Sega’s Super Monkey Ball App Store game for the iPhone and iPod Touch was downloaded over 300,000 times during the first 20 days of its launch. At $9.99 a pop (unless you know how to install it for “free”), that adds up to $3 million in sales for the Super Monkey Ball app alone. In fact, Apple averaged to make about $1 million a day in all App Store sales to bring in $30 million in just one month since the iPhone 3G launch. At this rate, the App Store is projected to bring in $360 million in just one year, a princely sum for such a young but promising platform.
“This thing’s going to crest a half a billion, soon,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time. I’ve never seen anything like this in my career for software.”
The success of the App Store is truly amazing, especially factoring in that the top 10 application developers received about $9 million combined in the first month, nearly a million each! Apple claims to pass on 70% of the profit to developers, keeping 30% to cover credit card transactions and cost to run the service.
