As of today, winpwn 2.0.0.4 finally supports iPhone 2.0.1 firmware IPSW creation. Now you can install jailbroken (and possibly unlocked) 2.0.1 firmware on your 2.5G or 3G iPhones. Again, unlock is only supported on the 1st-gen 2.5G iPhone, so 3G iPhone users will have to make do with jailbreaking for the time being. To get your iPhone to run on the latest 2.0.1 firmware, it’s a very similar process to the 2.0 ipsw firmware installation.

  1. Download the 2.0.1 restore firmware for 1st-gen 2.5G iPhones or 2nd-gen 3G iPhones depending on which iPhone you have.
  2. Download winpwn 2.0.0.4 and install it onto your system. Winpwn requires .NET framework 2.0. Make sure you completely uninstall any existing winpwn installations prior to this step.
  3. Connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable.
  4. Launch winpwn (the silly Pineapple icon now sitting on your desktop).
  5. Click on “Browse .ipsw”
  6. Browse to the path where you saved the v2.0.1 restore firmware you just downloaded and select the ipsw file. Note: Make sure you downloaded and selected the proper file, the 2.5G and 3G ipsw files are different and will cause 1600 errors if mixed up.
  7. Click on “IPSW Builder”

  8. Check the “Cydia” checkbox under the Applications tab. You don’t want to use Installer just yet as it is currently not mature. If you’re not on AT&T, you will need to check the “YouTube activation fix” as well.
    • winpwn applications tab
  9. Click on the “Advanced” tab which is second from right. If you have AT&T, make sure none of the checkboxes are checked. Otherwise, check “Activate Phone”, “Enable Baseband Update”, “Neuter bootloader 3.9/4.6″, “Unlock Baseband”, and “Autodelete Bootneuter.app”.
    • winpwn advanced tab
  10. Download the bootloader 3.9 binary and bootloader 4.6 binary.
  11. Click on “Bootloader 3.9 file …” and browse to the BL-39.bin file you just downloaded
  12. Click on “Bootloader 4.6 file …” and browse to the BL-46.bin file you just downloaded
    • winpwn advanced tab bootloader
  13. Click on the “Partition resizer” tab on the very right. Change the partition size to 550MB.
    • winpwn partition resizer
  14. Now you can finally build the ipsw by clicking the “Build .ipsw” button at the bottom. Remember where you saved the file (by default it goes under the C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\cmw\winpwn\2.0.0.4 directory if you can remember it). The process will take about 5 minutes.
  15. Click on “iPwner” and browse to the custom 2.0.1 ipsw firmware you just created.
  16. Click OK and you should get a message about pwning iTunes.

  17. Put your iPhone into DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode by pressing and holding the Power and Home buttons, letting go of the Power button after 10 seconds (the point at which your iPhone turns off) but continuing to hold the Home button for 10 seconds more. The screen should be completely black at this point. If it’s not you are not in DFU mode so you’ll need to do it again.
  18. Launch iTunes 7.7 and ignore any prompt from Apple to upgrade to 2.0.1 firmware.
  19. At this point you should consider making a backup restore point of your iPhone with iTunes as the firmware upgrade always wipes your iPhone.
  20. Holding down the shift key, click on the “Restore” after your iPhone connects to iTunes.
  21. Browse to your custom 2.0.1 firmware that you made with winpwn and use it to restore your iPhone.
  22. iTunes will install the 2.0.1 firmware on your iPhone for you. It will give you a series of dialogs like so. The whole process took about 15 minutes for me.
    • itunes prepare dialog
  23. Restoring all the data back took another 15-20 minutes but it really depends on how much data you have on there.

Congratulations, you are now on 2.0.1 firmware!

How do I get installer in after the instalation if I did not check that box ?

  • Comment from rodneyw1

I had tried to upgrade my 2g iphone to 2.02 software and could not get it to work until these directions. Thanks so much. Now in iTunes I get “An update to the carrier settings for your iphone is available. Would you like to download it now.” Should I do this or would it lock my phone. There is no box to check, do not ask this again. I use tmobile.
    Thanks.

    an unknow error ocurred (1601)…
does anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

If you forgot to check activate phone and you actually need activation (you are not with AT&T), your custom-built IPSW will be no good. You will need to rebuild it.

If you get error 16xx, you are not in DFU mode. Try step 17 again. Turn off your phone. Press and hold power/home until for 10 seconds, releasing power at that point but continuing to hold home until you hear your computer beep and recognize your iPhone as a “recovery” device or DFU device. Then you can release it.

If YouTube still doesn’t work even after you checked the YouTube activation checkbox, you’ll need to fix it manually. Check out the YouTube activation fix guide.

I follow all the step and all of it worked but at the end when i put T-mobile sims it did not work… please help

That shouldn’t happen if you created the custom ipsw properly. Did you see BootNeuter pop up the first time you started up your phone? If not, try the last step in the 2.0.2 upgrade guide which shows you how to install BootNeuter so you can use any SIM card with the iPhone. And if you have the 3G iPhone it’s not unlockable yet so don’t expect it work.

I see there is a large group having the same issue I am and not really good answers..
I am getting the 1601 error no matter what I do. I know how to put the phone in dfu mode.. been knowing that since last year. I make a custome ipsw file winpwn itunes and boom 1601 error. I have even tried lower version itunes to no luck. I have unlocked iphones with other popular methods this is the only one that has me really stuck:(
