[ # ] How to Install iPhone 2.0.1 Firmware IPSW with winpwn 2.0.0.4
/* Posted August 11th, 2008 at 11:37pm *//* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

As of today, winpwn 2.0.0.4 finally supports iPhone 2.0.1 firmware IPSW creation. Now you can install jailbroken (and possibly unlocked) 2.0.1 firmware on your 2.5G or 3G iPhones. Again, unlock is only supported on the 1st-gen 2.5G iPhone, so 3G iPhone users will have to make do with jailbreaking for the time being. To get your iPhone to run on the latest 2.0.1 firmware, it’s a very similar process to the 2.0 ipsw firmware installation.
- Download the 2.0.1 restore firmware for 1st-gen 2.5G iPhones or 2nd-gen 3G iPhones depending on which iPhone you have.
- Download winpwn 2.0.0.4 and install it onto your system. Winpwn requires .NET framework 2.0. Make sure you completely uninstall any existing winpwn installations prior to this step.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable.
- Launch winpwn (the silly Pineapple icon now sitting on your desktop).
- Click on “Browse .ipsw”
- Browse to the path where you saved the v2.0.1 restore firmware you just downloaded and select the ipsw file. Note: Make sure you downloaded and selected the proper file, the 2.5G and 3G ipsw files are different and will cause 1600 errors if mixed up.
- Click on “IPSW Builder”
- Check the “Cydia” checkbox under the Applications tab. You don’t want to use Installer just yet as it is currently not mature. If you’re not on AT&T, you will need to check the “YouTube activation fix” as well.
- Click on the “Advanced” tab which is second from right. If you have AT&T, make sure none of the checkboxes are checked. Otherwise, check “Activate Phone”, “Enable Baseband Update”, “Neuter bootloader 3.9/4.6″, “Unlock Baseband”, and “Autodelete Bootneuter.app”.
- Download the bootloader 3.9 binary and bootloader 4.6 binary.
- Click on “Bootloader 3.9 file …” and browse to the BL-39.bin file you just downloaded
- Click on “Bootloader 4.6 file …” and browse to the BL-46.bin file you just downloaded
- Click on the “Partition resizer” tab on the very right. Change the partition size to 550MB.
- Now you can finally build the ipsw by clicking the “Build .ipsw” button at the bottom. Remember where you saved the file (by default it goes under the C:\Documents and Settings\
\Application Data\cmw\winpwn\2.0.0.4 directory if you can remember it). The process will take about 5 minutes. - Click on “iPwner” and browse to the custom 2.0.1 ipsw firmware you just created.
- Click OK and you should get a message about pwning iTunes.
- Put your iPhone into DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode by pressing and holding the Power and Home buttons, letting go of the Power button after 10 seconds (the point at which your iPhone turns off) but continuing to hold the Home button for 10 seconds more. The screen should be completely black at this point. If it’s not you are not in DFU mode so you’ll need to do it again.
- Launch iTunes 7.7 and ignore any prompt from Apple to upgrade to 2.0.1 firmware.
- At this point you should consider making a backup restore point of your iPhone with iTunes as the firmware upgrade always wipes your iPhone.
- Holding down the shift key, click on the “Restore” after your iPhone connects to iTunes.
- Browse to your custom 2.0.1 firmware that you made with winpwn and use it to restore your iPhone.
- iTunes will install the 2.0.1 firmware on your iPhone for you. It will give you a series of dialogs like so. The whole process took about 15 minutes for me.
- Restoring all the data back took another 15-20 minutes but it really depends on how much data you have on there.
Congratulations, you are now on 2.0.1 firmware!

I don’t believe there are any restrictions or differences between 3G iPhones sold in different countries so this should work.
For 3G iPhones you actually won’t be able to select all of the boxes because it can’t be unlocked right now so you are right on track.

Thanks!
This is a really detailed explanation.
I do get an ‘error 6′ though…
time after time I get it, it takes too much time for the ‘preparing iphone software recovery’
Don’t know what to do….
Comment from fleb [August 12, 2008, 6:51 pm]
hey bart you are probably in iboot mode. make sure you iphone is on then hold home and power at the same time for about 7 seconds then it will turn off then release the power button and keep holding the home button until itunes recognizes it again
Comment from josh [August 12, 2008, 7:14 pm]
i have the same problem as Bart… i KNOW i am in DFU mode too. i jailbroke close to ten ipod touches a while back and i put every one of them in DFU mode with ease. this iphone was put in DFU mode for pwnage about a month or so ago, before the 2.0.1 release. no progress, currently on attempt 4…

Since your iPhone was previously pwned at 2.0, just skip step 17.

If you get error 6: you are not in DFU mode.
Comment from rg1977 [August 14, 2008, 12:12 pm]
Step 17 for putting your iPhone into DFU mode is backwards. It “should” say: Hold the “Power” and “Home” buttons for 10 seconds then release the “Power” button and continue to hold the “Home” button for an additional 10 seconds. ;)

yup. Im on attempt 6 or so with the same error “6″. It seems this is everyones problem and a very few seem to have fixed it. I think it has something to do with the way the custom file was created thru winpwn(ect selecting installer or not, selecting bootneuter or not) BECAUSE I have successfully put my iphone in DFU mode numerous times, each requiring a master restore to 2.0.1 before it can be attempted again >:| And when i attempt to put ol’ faithful 1.1.4 back on, I get a 1601 error so im fuckin stuck! This is horseshit!
Anyone who can crack this will be a god in mine and a myriad of others eyes im sure!
Comment from Joevpt [August 15, 2008, 6:03 am]
rhenry86, in order to ‘downgrade’ to ver 1.1.4 you need to have an old version of iTunes. Most people use version 7.5.

After 2 days of trying everything I could find, this was the only thing that worked.
I did have to downgrade my version of itunes. Version 7.7.1.11 did not work.
I downgraded to 7.7.0.43

Thank you. It worked flawlessly. A note on the DFU mode. If you can’t get it right, go to the website mentioned by yunus. I tried the alternate way (i.e. hold the home until the USB recognizes it. No problems whatsoever.

I have repeatedly tried unlocking and jailbreaking 2.0.1 with winpwn with no success and repeatedly receiving (error 6). If you forgot to move the root partition slider to 550mb like me, there is your problem.

I am attempting to unlock my 2G iphone. I have AT&T, so I don’t check “Activate.” Everything goes well, it creates the ipsw, I put my phone in DFU mode, and restored to the .ipsw I made, but gives me the same miserable “Slide for emergency” Connect to iTunes screen. iTunes does not auto activate it, and if I go through the steps on iTunes it of course, says it will add the data plan which is what I’m trying to avoid. What am I doing wrong?

I had tried to upgrade my 2g iphone to 2.02 software and could not get it to work until these directions. Thanks so much. Now in iTunes I get “An update to the carrier settings for your iphone is available. Would you like to download it now.” Should I do this or would it lock my phone. There is no box to check, do not ask this again. I use tmobile.
Thanks.

If you forgot to check activate phone and you actually need activation (you are not with AT&T), your custom-built IPSW will be no good. You will need to rebuild it.
If you get error 16xx, you are not in DFU mode. Try step 17 again. Turn off your phone. Press and hold power/home until for 10 seconds, releasing power at that point but continuing to hold home until you hear your computer beep and recognize your iPhone as a “recovery” device or DFU device. Then you can release it.

If YouTube still doesn’t work even after you checked the YouTube activation checkbox, you’ll need to fix it manually. Check out the YouTube activation fix guide.

That shouldn’t happen if you created the custom ipsw properly. Did you see BootNeuter pop up the first time you started up your phone? If not, try the last step in the 2.0.2 upgrade guide which shows you how to install BootNeuter so you can use any SIM card with the iPhone. And if you have the 3G iPhone it’s not unlockable yet so don’t expect it work.

Hey I have a 2G iPhone that I updated to 2.0.1 i think…lol. I am now trying to unlock, I have been through most of the problems people have posted, all with no result. Now, however i have a new one….I put my iPhone in DFU, the computer reciognises this….then in iTunes it comes up with:”contacting iPhone software update server” and then “waiting for iPod…” for ages and then i get error 1601?
Help please.

I see there is a large group having the same issue I am and not really good answers..
I am getting the 1601 error no matter what I do. I know how to put the phone in dfu mode.. been knowing that since last year. I make a custome ipsw file winpwn itunes and boom 1601 error. I have even tried lower version itunes to no luck. I have unlocked iphones with other popular methods this is the only one that has me really stuck:(

Interesting!
I inherited a G1 from my brother in law in the UK who upped to the new G3. So i tried this using my old sim card (the G1 was never released in canada, where i am)
Getting “The iPHone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6).”
anyone
