How to hack your T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur)

The Dash/Excalibur is a nice little smart phone that runs on Windows Mobile. If you use it a lot you will notice that it inherantly has a few problems with it from the get go. For example, there seems to be a memory leak and the alarm feature is messed up. If you bought one a long time ago and hoped that Windows Mobile 6.1 would fix it, sorry but you are out of luck. Don’t fret though, the guys at xda developers have solved most if not all the Dash’s problems!
This ROM update fixes most if not all the bugs on the phone, and adds new features.

2. Reboot your Dash then connect to the computer via USB cord
3. Run the SDA Application Unlock Run with your Dash Plugged in with a USB Cord
4. Reboot your Dash
5. Download Kavana’s Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM

I loaded the excalibur hack everything worked great excect the keyboard the numbered keys typed the wrong letters when pushed any help??????

Now that I have switched to Kavana, which i love, my SD card either doesnt get recognized or when it does takes FOREVER to show what is on the card. Could someone please help me out with a fix. Reformatted and nothing.

i downloaded kavana a month ago, went in to change the clock setting, and it ended up freezing my phone up for good, no matter what i did to try to get it unfrozed, but hell i wish i could have it again, just dont trust to do it again.

well everything is working good on this , had a problem w/ internet but tmobile helped me out with it, my MSM messages are not getting sent or recieved, any idea on this would be greatly appreciated….im sure there are other small things that will eventually be worked out, also the girl at tech support at tmobile said they are in beta with their version of 6.1…….gues we’ll see what that consists of

i’ll try to look into that problem tommorow. Switching between the iphone and dash all the time these days
when i was installing it it said the screen would turn white or something, I followed the instructions and it asked for something, I clicked ok and it went back, I tried the program again and my dash froze >.>
I installed the upgrade with no problems. The only thing i see that is a problem with this upgrade is the phones clock does not set itself with the T mobile network. Also i am not able to view picture messages or have not figured it out yet. Is there a fix for the clock updating itself?

How to fix your MMS
Setting up the handset
1. On the handset, press Start.
2. Scroll to Settings and press the center button.
3. Scroll to Connections and press the center button.
4. Scroll to GPRS and press the center button.
5. Press Menu.
6. Scroll to Add and press the center button.
7. Scroll to Description and enter T-Mo MMS.
8. Scroll to Connects to and scroll horizontally to WAP Network.
9. Scroll to Access point and enter wap.voicestream.com.
10. Scroll to User name and enter . Otherwise leave this field blank.
11. Scroll to Password and enter . Otherwise leave this field blank.
12. Press Done twice.
13. Press Menu.
14. Scroll to Advanced and press the center button.
15. Scroll to WAP connection and scroll horizontally to T-Mo MMS.
16. Press Done.
17. Press the red End Call button.
Setting up the MMS profile
1. On the handset, press Start.

Update your Active sync with the latest version, that should solve your problem

Ok, now that you updated, unplug the phone from your computer, turn it off, pull out hte battery then turn it back on and connect it to the computer, see if that solves your problem.

does your phone still work? It does right? The only problem right now is that it doesnt synch? I tried to add you on yahoo btw (cisco_****@yahoo.com – i stared out the numbers/letters) but you werent on. I dont actually think its that big of a problem, but just a software config issue. If you have an extra computer, try a fresh install of activesynch and see if that works. Its like 1:30am over here now, but i will be back on in the morning. Good luck with it.
Ok, now that you got the synch to work, what you need to do is download the cab file and drag it onto your dash and run it from there.
right click and do a save target as onto your desktop then drag it over

Hey I installed everything and I love it thankyou, but one problem, my FavFive is gone and its really bothering me is there any possible way to get it back, T-Mobile cant do anything about it unless I probably re-format my whole phone and restore it to default but than this WM6.1 will be erased as well im sure, any ideas how to install My Favs back onto my phone much thanks.

need serious help. Started to update dash to 6.1 and accidently pulled usb cord. now phone turn on with only 3 lines a red which says (onbl 1.22.0000), a green line which says (spl 1.22.0000), and a blue which has nothing. please help

i have everything running fine; however, my internet will not work on the phone. it says “verify your settings in Connections”. i have no idea what to do…its the internet plan for $19.99 that i can not get working now. any ideas?

make sure you have the latest version of active synch. Download the latest one from micrsoft, install it and it should synch up
Totally destroyed my Tmobile Dash upon install. Error Logging came up…Now I can’t get freezes at start HTC screen.
hi alex, can you give me a detailed walk through of exactly what happened when you went through the steps above? WHen did you get the error messages and what kind of error messages did you get? What OS are you running, etc etc
That way, maybe we can help you debug. Can your HTC still be connected to your computer? Have you tried to run the install program again?
Thinking about getting a Tmobile dash in the next few days so came on here to get some more info on upgrades. How stable is the upgrade to 6.1 with these mods? Was wondering would the chat programs from TMobile like aim/yahoo/msn need to be reinstalled after the upgrade or are they exclusive to the tmobile only roms? Thanks in advance for any responses.On a side note been reading all the comments and have to say Jason ya sound like a pretty cool guy helping everyone out.
this rom is really stabled compared to the TMobile one. It comes with MSN installed but aim and yahoo will need to be resinstalled
Thanks Son Riku. I’m picking up the tmobile dash unlocked but was wondering after I flash it to this new 6.1 rom would the phone again need to be unlocked or am I in the free and clear? Last thing I need is to buy a phone and brick it.

Long Answer:
if you go through the steps, one of them is to totally unlock your phone, not just carrier unlock

This will allow you to run any type of code you want to on the phone.
I just downloaded this and everything worked fine but i was chaning setting and on was the Hz setting and now once I get to my home screen everything freezes and is unresponsive. PLEASE HELP ME!!
you could always re run the install apps and restore it to the default state.

HAHA for some reason the Hard reset was not working but by changing the timing of holding the soft keys I was able to get my phone working properly once again. This new setup is freaking AWESOME, my wife is so jealous of the features that my jailbroken and unlocked Dash or Excalibur has now. :) Thanks for all the help.

Just ran SDA Application unlock and still get message “Network is locked. Please input unlock code”. On the screen there is a field to ender unlock code.
I have successfully installed the Kavana on my T-Mobile Dash(US version). I can not get it to sync. I have Vista and you can not install Active sync on Vista. I am at my wits end! Can someone help? i got the Kavana, but of course the keys are wrong when i text. i followed all the steps but now i cant get the file copied to my dashcause it wont show up. i really need help ive been at it for 2 hours
I got mine fixed. The problem i was having is i have a decompression programm and it would always run when i downloaded the cab file. the problem was it was decompressing the programm. just put the program on the desktop the move it over do not use winzip or any other programs to decompress it it is fine and ready to use.
here i am again :) i got everything working, now i just can’t get any multimedia text messages. do you know if i have to download another patch to get this working?

This is the best forum I have seen so far on the Dash, and I must say Well Done!
I have several issues, which I hope to be fixed by Kavana, but I will wait till I have my phone backed up first.
I have a few problems for the willing:
1) I have a Mac, is there a FREE Active-Sync program, or something comparable, for Mac?
2) Sometimes, I have issues with the Mac Bluetooth communicating (i.e. detecting, sending, and receiving) with my Dash.
3) I am an avid user of Skype (VoIP telephony service). Does anyone know how I can get Skype Mobile to install on my Dash? I am getting an error message: “‘SkypeForSmartphone’ is not a valid Windows CE application”.
PLEASE HELP!

Okay,, figured it out….
On the USB to PC connections setting under all setting, make sure “Enhanced Network ” is unchecked. After I unchecked this tab, Windows Mobile Device Center recognized the Dash and is synching!!!
guys sorry it wasn’t clear… when i open my dash it hangs on start up… it doesnt do thru… what happens is i open power it up and when it vibrates it syops from them i dont see Windows Mobile anymore… how can i install if it doesnt open… it happened when i installed my kavana to TM, i had a problem with the camera so i went back to installing WM5 and when i was installing i accidentally stopped it… when it was installing i was thingking i could cancel it… and the problem started there.. now when i open it it hangs in a sec or two… can anybody help me pls… IM me on my YM… habarahu@yahoo.com… BUZZ me… thanks guys…

Just did the installation. Everything went off without a hitch.
Does anyone have a way to dial letters and have the phone translate them into numbers? If I dial 1-800-Flowers, it tries to dial 1-800 and doesn’t connect. If no one has a hack for that, is there a way to replace the “smartphone” banner above the dialing area with a picture that says 2(ABC) 3(DEF) etc.?

You’ll have to register but they have .CAB files that you can install to replace the “smartphone” banner with a letter decoder.
I have had wm6.1 installed for a few weeks but I can’t get past one issue. Randomly, my phone just shuts off and won’t power up again until it is connected to a power source. Anyone else experience anything similar? Any fixes?
I’m having this problem too. I have done hard reset but I feel that it might be power/battery issue despite fact battery is saying 100% and has been charged. When I plug into power source this does not happen. Also when listening to music and this happens the payback is choppy and crackles before the phone shuts down. Anybody else experience this? What is the issue?

I don’t actually get any errors. The phone just turns off (usually in the middle of a conversation, or immediately after give or take 10 minutes). The battery is not an issue as I have over 90% battery when this happens.

I can pretty much guarantee it is the battery. I had the same problem and it drove me nuts. The battery is damaged. it is not holding a charge. It will show that it it well energized whereas it will act weird and just shut the phone off. Take your battery out and place it on a table or any flat surface, if it spins on any side or rocks back and forth, your battery is bulging and is bad. I suggest buying and extended life battery (1600mAh or 2200mAh series battery)online.

If your phone is doing what Travis’ phone is doing, “shutting off” completely without warning then you need to buy a new battery as well. it is a problem that even when you call T-Mobile they can not help you but suggest you turn the phone in for another phone. It is just the battery

The alarm will show up twice when it goes off and will only play for several seconds. I have it set to play a wave file and it will play, then a second later, it’ll play again on top of what is already playing so it sounds like an echo. I’ll show two “alarm 1″ entries on the phone. Any ideas? Already downloaded SKTools to delete notifications but don’t see anything in the queue.
Great ROM d/l. After download, I am experiencing severe battery loss. Didn’t have this prob before ROM update. Display and power settings have been set for minimal battery use. I have en exchange email account set up through Active Sync as well as one POP3 email account. I think phone is loosing power because Active Sync stays connected once it’s triggered to send/receive. Have it set to check every 30 minutes but program continues to run in “tasks”. PLease Help

What happens here is after 30 seconds, instead of the screen going dark, it goes all white. I think that’s the power leak.
How can I change the display from turning white?

guys FYI dont use your cameras near a very strong light, like near an incubator… it will damage your cameras…. my dash and my sisters camera got messed up.. just used it near an incubator….. now its got like rainbow colors in it…

I did the Kavana, and found this site, and I am loving it! My Dash is insane now! Like me! But I can not yet get the Internet? I did all the steps like you all say above, and still it prompts me to go to settings and connections. But already I can tell that if I ever get back online with my beast it will be neatorino for sure! (California for GREAT). Hey, SkyFire Browser is out for the Dash, it works great (If you get the right version). And Viveo Vtap is cool too letting you get Youtube and more. I could use some help on configuring my Internet settings now. Please, any help?
Oh, I forgot too to say Thanks! I have a Macbook and could not figure out how to Sync with my Dash. DOOD!! This ROM is teh awesome!! I love it. I have run into an interesting snag that I can’t find any docx on; once the updates are complete, the only way to get my email on the phone now is to plug in and use activesync. Any way to get it to syunc using the wireless from my carrier again?

2 – i fixed my keyboard but some of the keys r still iffy, like i cant type an “!” when i press alt and the letter “M” which is where the “!” is i get a =. My “Q” button with the “%” on it gives me a “!”…other than that keyboards ok.

4 – whats the difference between “file explorer” and “resco explorer” it seems like they share the same data thats on ur fone but can i get rid of one of them?? will it damage my fone in n e way?

For all of you who are have been having an issue with syncing your internet or getting the internet connection error when sending email. I have t-mobile service. If you have another service you will probably need to contact you service provider. On your dash go to Start | Settings | Connections | GPRS. Select New and add the following inforamtion. For Description: T-Mobile Data. Connects to: The Internet. Access Point: wap.voicestream.com. You can alos set up your MMS here too. Description: T-Mobile MMS. Connects to: WAP Network. Access Point: wap.voicestream.com. Hope this helps somebody.

I changed the LCD of my Dash, right after that USB sync is OK, cannot charge it thru USB port. Try open it to check, reassembly it, now unable to sync with USB and could not charge (the original problem). Anybody can give me the advice what went wrong. Please help

this is probably a stupid question but i just installed all this on my phone, it works perfect, but except for my keys, i tried to put TegiceT9USEnglish.CAB and the other ones that are on here, but when i put them on my phone it says that it is not supported for use on this device, and its for transport or storage only… i don’t know how to fix this, any help?

This program is awesome, I have one problem, I can’t go to the internet. I tried to follow the steps one person posted, but it didn’t work for me. Can someone help. I go to the Microsoft Internet Explorer, it pulls up the home page of IE Mobile, when I type in a search or do a favorite, I get, “the current connection cannot be used for your request. Please end the current connection and try again. Before that it was kicking me to my Windows Explorer and pulling up my files. Help?
Just wanted to add to my post, I got my internet, T-Mobile helped me. Just told them I was messing around with settings to see what they did and she walked me thru it getting that set. I really like this program. I know now that the bad battery is what was causing my phone to go off all the time. I looked at one post that told about the battery rocking on a flat surface. Boy, did mine rock back and forth. New battery….no problems at all. Now guys how about some great software for Dash users….any ideas for a site where you don’t get the error messages that you’ve chosen the wrong programs for your windows version? I have just did the downloads but have not did the installs yet. I am with at&t and i have seen issues about at&t after the installs was finished but I never seen there answers answered. So I have a few questions.
1. Do I remove the sim card before I do the install?
2. Is it gonna ask for a unlock code after I do all this?
3. I understand you lose the volume stip. How do you adjust the volume while you are talking on the phone?

This is great. Great instructions, easy install. For those of you who have a hard time with ActiveSync, just use a MicroSD card. I thought I installed the keyboard fix wrong but I I realized that I forgot to restart the phone.

I tried fixing my Keybad and I even got as far as putting the downloaded software on my phone. But when I tried to open it on the phone it said that There was no application associated with ET9EXC

There was no application associated with ET9EXC. SO I am assuming that the appication is in your pc, so, at this time locate it and move it to you (whatever you have your phone named as on your pc) and synchronize it. After that is done go to your phone and search for the application under “resco Explorer” press center key from there scroll to program/ files you will see it in there as “eT9 ” press center key scroll and look for eT9. Excaibur, once you locate it, click on action , then scroll to open and it will run and install.

Like Joe explained when you down load the KeyBoard fix, do not un-zip the file. Just save the down load to your desktop (or where ever) and using Sync Center copy and past the file to your Dash. (I right click on the file and select “send to” and use “AVS Mobile Updater” if you choose to use that program) Now using your T-Mobile Dash goto Start>File Explorer> Then press Menu> Select 7 My Device> Scroll down to the Tegice T9USEenglish file and press your center button on your phone. Then simply restart your phone and wa la there it is.
To recap on how to get your $19.99 a month subscription internet going again follow these steps.

I have just notice something interesting for setting up your internet. On your Dash select Start>Accessories>Connection Setup.

Concerning the above post, I thought it worked for me. I am not sure exactly what it did.
Simply followed all instructions at the top of the page and…voila! My Dash rocks! The new system looks awesome and I even have a black background theme that I didn’t have to download! If you want to know, just ask.
I have a couple of issues with this download:
1. It seems I have lost my stereo, or at least my ability to have both head phones working at the same time.
2. At times when using the curser it will run around to all of the boxes that are selectable on what ever page I am filling in information.

I now have 6.1 on my dash and am having a couple problems. I FINALLY realized you don’t unzip the cab file to change the keymapping (I think I am using the right terms) but I ran it, turned the phone off and on and it still gives me a = when I alt the M (instead of a !).
AND the most annoying thing is that no matter what I am doing – internet, typing a text, reading a text – it times out in say 10 seconds. It is VERY irritating because my brain stops and I have to hit my head on the wall to finish my thoughts when typing texts. Ok, JK, but still! And moving around the internet, reading then it blanks out on my – AAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!
Please help. I have set the timeouts everywhere I can find them to the highest time but still no help.

I would really like to do this, but I have concerns about it working judging by a lot of responses. What is stopping me from trying it is knowing whether or not I can reset it back to the original software, even if by turning the phone on while holding the two “-” buttons to reformat or whatever. is this possible at all or does it clear that software out too?
I take back that I lost my stereo. That was a boo boo of my own. I even had my phone provider send me another phone, only to find that my sound button was only half way selected. Hummm. If you understand. This soft ware is awsome.

Hey I’m curious if this new Kavana 6.1 will cause your Dash to crash. I had it installed for a few hours, and then all of a sudden I took it out of my pocket and the screen was broken. It appeared that one of the bottom layers of the screen broke, for it is completely white with a black smudge in the corner. Is is just a coincedence that my screen broke when it did or can Kavana 6.1 have caused this? I’m not sure if I should install it again on my new Dash. Thanks

Everything is working fine, except i lost my fave 5, im not sure if there’s a plugin or something, i havent a solution here, also i’ve installed the cab file for the keyboard mapping, however when i try to text instead of typing the letters ex: W,E,R it types the alternate key in this case the numbers 1,2,3. Ok about the keyboard, i’ve solved that, wheni downloaded the cab file i had placed it under documents and installed it under storage card, so instead i uninstalled it, and reinstalled under application data–> UA contents (which when i had the tmobile rom is where it would normally go) then i installed the cab file on the device instead of the storage card, so now i have no issue with the keyboard YAY!!!! My sole issue (as far as i know) is My Faves. I got the new Tmobile Dash-Black just this past wednesday, and i took a big risk of doing this but im glad i did. So if anyone could please help me with the myfaves issue, it would be greatly appreciated. If i find a solution before hand i will post it on here, just like i did for the keyboard mapping.

I have an HTC Excalibur (tmoble dash) I have an issue with the phone. about 3 or 4 times a day the phone shuts off. I am not talking the device itself, the application for the phone shuts off.
Has anyone heard of a similar problem?

I have a Dash and would like to use it with another carrier other than t-mobile but it keeps asking for a sim lock code. Infact it displays “you have tried 9 times. Pls wait for retry”. This continues for very long and I get bore and turn the phone off. Luckyly I came across this site and follow the instructions in installing the 6.1. The installation was successful but whenever I insert the sim in the phone it still displays “you have tried 9 times. Pls wait for retry” which makes me unable to use the phone. james if this is a phone that was yours through tmobile then the easyest way is to call tmobile and ask them for the code but if it was not yours on tmobile then i dont know if they can get it for you but you can ask them i have a dash also and had the same problem this thing here does not unlock the sim lock you either have to get it from tmobil or you can try to buy it i did not have any luck buying it so i asked them for itand 2 day later they sent it in an email to me but if you like the factory rom here is the link to tmobil to get it back http://member.htc.com/RuuDownload/T-mobileUS/FileDownload.aspx this is the origanil rom and dont try puting the code in any more till you get the right one cause tmobile told me if it is put in wrong to many times that it will perminaly lock to them

Upgraded to Ricky’s v24 of the 6.1 ROM — everything (I think) worked with the exception of my Bluetooth pairing. When I am prompted for the passkey I enter “0000″ (happens with both my Motorola HS820 and HS850 both of which paired with no problem before the ROM upgrade) and then I get an error “Your device did not connect with the HS820. The conn. failed or the passcode is incorrect” I know the passcode is fine because I have paid this headset many other times AND I get the same problem with both headsets…. gotta be the phone.

I have done the 6.1 upgrade on my tmobile dash and i love it but i have 1 issue i am not able to connect to my AP via wifi my AP shows up in the wifi setting on my dash but i am anot able to connect to it i have all the setting correct and i have the correct passkey but nothing does any one have any ideas
I ran RUU_Excaliber exe, and one of the steps to update the ROM says something like “press the center button and your screen will turn nearly white” At that point, my ActiveSync disconnects. The onscreen instructions then say something like “ensure you have an activesync connection” before going on to the next step. I can’t do it. I’ve tried to just go on to the next step without reconnecting and it just says something like “can’t be found” and exits. Help…!

This OS is wonderful. However, I am having one problem. In it’s version-6 (provided by T-Mobile), I had the option of setting multiple hotmail accounts at a time. In Kavana’s, I am unable to set up more than one hotmail accounts at a time. Can someone please help on this?

Go to Seetings – Regional Settings and set your locale to “English (United Kingdom)”. I have a T-mobile Dash and after installing the tegiceT9US, my keyboard didn’t work properly but after changing the locale, it’s working fine.
GREAT upgrade. Things move a lot faster. Since this mod opens up My Location in Google Maps, I have a GPS system on the cheap.
Be sure to follow the correct instructions regarding the keymap.
Also, Internet won’t work unless you follow the fix.
Other than that, big improvement in responsiveness and speed. Even the Internet data rate seems faster. Thanks!!!!!!!

the keypad is all messed up , i tried everything, and its still messed up
i nrrd to upgrade to better version that will fix bugs/ errors or dowgrade back to tmobiles original firmware,, or simply just get something that will fix the darn problem!!!!!!! i dont care for the phone anymore.

ok i have a broken t-mobile dash and i need all of the contacts on the phone, it i have had someone try and hackinto it but nothing, it does not turn on past the start up screen and i need a softwear person to dig through the files and make it give me my contacts.. willing to pay

Installed this on my excalibur and works great. I like the phone much better now. I had to use the keyboard fix but it only took me like 2 mins to figure it out. Thanks for the help

I just got the HTC Snap (Dash 3G), does this stuff work on this new version of the dash?
P.S. the wheel sensitivity on the 3g version is badddd, takes a lot to scroll. Hopefully there will be some hacks for that to speed it up unless it’s a hardware limitation. Other then the keyboard keys being odd so i’m always off by one key or so, the phone is AWESOME
I still have a problem with my keyboard it tried the t9 download on this page and it didnt work so i downloaded another with the install and it said not a valid windows ce app. and yes i’ve already installed the windows 6.1. can someone help me and if not can someone tell me how to get it back to da original settings

Is there any possibility of a hack that would enable phone over WiFi on the Dash? It’s kind of ironic that it has the WiFi hardware but the phone won’t/can’t use it.

@Mica, after following the ‘key fixing’ instructions all I had to do was reboot the Dash and it worked fine.

After you enter everything for the internet connection, turn your phone off and on. Worked for me.

I got a problem, I was trying to upgrade it but it keeps giving me this error message:
Error [270] Update Error.
The image file is corrupted. Please check your Update Utility.
and I tried different ones but it keeps giving the same message what should I do someone plz help
