Downgrade iPhone v2.0 to v1.1.4 (Firmware and Baseband)

If you jumped on the v2.0 firmware bandwagon with your 2.5G first-gen iPhone but found that your phone got locked back into the AT&T network, you will need to downgrade the existing v2.0 firmware back to v1.1.4 to unlock your iPhone to once again enjoy the benefits of carrier freedom. At least if you call having only one other alternative carrier (T-Mobile) freedom. To downgrade your iPhone back down to good old unlockable v1.1.4, it’s potentially a two-step process of downgrading first the firmware and then if necessary the baseband, a key step for those of you who even after a 1.1.4 restore cannot unlock the phone. Don’t worry, we’ve got all the steps covered for you. Check it out.

  1. Uninstall iTunes 7.7 and install iTunes 7.5.0.20 Windows or Mac again (or try iTunes 7.6.2 for Windows or Mac if iTunes 7.5 doesn’t work out).
  2. Go to your music folder and delete all iTunes related libraries folders and files (namely, ituneslibrary.itl). If you don’t, iTunes will not open, telling you that the libraries were created in a newer version.
  3. Launch iTunes and make sure it is running without any problems.
  4. Perform a full restore on your iPhone from iTunes
    1. Hook up your iPhone to your computer with the USB cable and turn the iPhone off. The screen will go blank.
    2. Then press and hold the Home and then Power buttons for 10 seconds, releasing the Power button but continuing to hold the Home button until your computer makes a noise that it has detected a USB connection. When this occurs nothing will be displayed on your iPhone, just know that the iPhone is in DFU (device firmware upgrade) mode and you can proceed with the firmware downgrade in iTunes.
    3. If the screen lights up with anything you have held both buttons too long, start again
  5. Once your iPhone is in DFU mode, you iTunes will automatically downgrade the iPhone firmware back to v.1.1.4. Just in case you need it, we’ve also provided the 1.1.4 firmware. To load it on your iPhone, shift-click on the Restore button and load the file.
  6. Should you get error 1050, just load the file a second time and do it one more time. When or if you get the error a second time, it’s time to launch ZiPhone.
  7. You need to downgrade the baseband firmware from 04.05.01_G, 04.05.02_G, 04.05.03_G, and 04.05.04_G down to 04.03.13_G which is the only one that can be unlocked.
    1. First you will need to download the baseband downgrader for Windows or Mac.
    2. Run the “ZiPhoneGUI – patched by kIREmK.exe” if on Windows or “ZiPhoneOSX patched by kIREmK 04.05.04_G [En].app” on Mac.
    3. If you don’t know your baseband version on Windows, check the “Downgrade Baseband” along with “Debug Boot” and click “START.” Otherwise just check “Downgrade Baseband” on Mac.
  8. Try unlocking your iPhone now. Hopefully your downgrade went successfully.

A big thanks to YT and Matt for working out all the problems and sharing with the rest of us!

Troubleshooting
“Ziphone V3.0 has stopped working – a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you etc….”
Your ZiPhone is corrupted, uninstall it, delete it, and download it again.

“The iPhone update server could not be contacted. An unknown error occurred (-185)”
Don’t download the restore file from iTunes. Download 1.1.4 from this link and shift-click on the Restore button.

Error 20
You are not in DFU mode. Follow the directions again exactly.

Error 1015
You might get this, just ignore and reload the ipsw restore file the first time. The second time you encounter this error, you can proceed with the steps.

iTunes complains that libraries were created in a newer version
Go to your iTunes music folder and delete it, making sure the *.itl files are gone.

Error 16xx

If you get error 20 you are not in restore mode on your iPhone. Follow the directions and try it again.

  • Comment from Mark

Does anybody know what error code 1604 means. I keep getting it no matter what I try. I have even put iTunes back to 7.7 and then updated the iPhone to fresh then started the whole process again downgrading to first 7.64 then 7.5 and doing the restore but it starts the process then stops giving me error code 1604! This is very frustrating – I know I’m in DFU mode as ZiPhone tells me it is if I try using that app (I was desperately trying anything after about 15 attempts, obviously didn’t work either)

  • Comment from adm_snackbar

If you get error codes 16xx like 1604, try everything on a fresh (different) PC. First make sure you install iTunes 7.7 because you need its baseband drivers, then uninstall it (the drivers will remain). Then install iTunes 7.6/7.5 and try again. Since your iPhone has upgraded its baseband revision, you need the 7.7 drivers to recognize it. iTunes 7.6/7.5 won’t recognize the newer baseband without the 7.7 drivers so you will get 16xx errors.

Uninstall your ITunes completely, Go into ITunes folder or to Music folder and delete file named “ituneslibrary.itl” or the whole ITunes folder , after that install fresh version of ITunes 7.5 or 7.6

Sam I am doing unlocking with another phone now so here step by step as I do it I type : if you dont have a BLACK screen you are not in Recovery Mode, if you see ITunes and cables no your screen it is not what you want, you need totally black screen. Do this connect it to Itunes 7.5, Turn it of completly by holding Power Button. Now Hold Home button and also hold power button for 10 seconds ( exactly 10 sec no more), afte 10 sec release power button but keep holding HOME button, in 5 sec you will hear Itunes detecting Iphone, Now do STEP 3 on top, download filmare 1.1.4 provided link above, and in Itunes select Shift+Restore button in Itunes and locate this 1.1.4 filmware. At the end you will get Error 1015. Now go to ZiPhone and go to Advanced Features( in left bottom conner) click on Downgrade Bootloader and click Perform Action ( you’ll see text running on your Iphone now and wait for 5-7 min, if nothing happens you will have to start all over by restoring to 1.1.4 doing Shift+Restore and selecting silmware 1.1.4 file on your PC.
After you Downgraded Bootloader , select Do it All !!! in ZiPhone and wait for it to complete. Once it completed you will see your Iphone main screen and it is UNLOCKED completly. Good Luck !

YT, thanks very much for your help. Unfortunately after having followed your instructions and “downgrading bootloader”. A message immediately comes up. “‘Ziphone V3.0 has stopped working’ – a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you etc….” I am just wondering if my copy of Ziphone is corrupted? Any more suggestions? Thanks again

Thanks YT, It was a problem with encrytion when unzipping Ziphone. Did it on my wifes computer and all is working OK – I just dont get the Network. Seems that others have had the problem so will go and look at their solutions before bothereing you again. Thanks again Mark

  • Comment from Mark Sampson

    Hey guys,
Being a dumbf***, I did the same, as it seems, did most of you. My brain said stop but the finger had too much inertia!!!
The whole description eventhough well intentioned, for idiots like me is still unclear – I have spent hours trying to resolve the problem. The only thing that kept me from throwing my iPhone against the wall was the fact that so many of you were successful.
In the end I was too!!!!
I have written the whole procedure I went through down. So next time I’m stupid, I don’t have to spend 10 hrs unblocking the phone. Hope it helps some of you. Thanks again to YT for his help when I was struggling.
    1) First you have to downgrade iTunes to at least 7.6.2.9., Its available above (do yourself a favour and save it – you might need it again. While you are at it download 1.1.4 and kIREmK 04.05.04.zip as well. Save it to a folder that you will be able to find later.
    2) Go to your music folder and delete all iTunes related libraries folders & files (*.itl). If you don’t . iTunes will not open, telling you that the libraries were created in a newer version.
    3) Now download iTunes 7.6.2.9 or earlier.
    4) Before you continue make sure iTunes is up and running.
    5) Now take your iPhone and connect it to your computer. You should hear the beep telling you it is connected. It might tell you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode – close this or any other message that appears.
    6) Now press the power button (the one at the top) down until you get the “power off” command.
    7) When the screen has gone black, press the power button and the home button together and hold them for 8 – 10 secs, then release the power button while continuing the home button. (If the screen lights up with anything you have held both buttons too long – start again). Some computers give you a message that you are in DFU mode, but others may not. You will however get a beep and the Iphone screen will remain black.
    8) You will then get a message that the Iphone needs to be restored.
    9) Press shift and then double click the restore button on the screen. Your file menu will appear on the screen. Find where you saved the “1.1.4.zip” and double click it. 1.1.4 it will now download on to your phone – you will see the files being transferred.
    10) After they have been transferred you may get a “1015” error. Now down load the file a 2nd time. When the error comes up again go to Ziphone.
    11) In Ziphone click the do it all button. You will writing scrolling on your iPhone. This should last a few minutes and your phone will be unlocked.
    12) In my case I had to go a few steps further as the phone would not pick up the cell phone net work.
    13) Go to Ziphone – Advanced Features. Make sure your phone is connected and recognised by iTunes and select “Downgrade bootloader” – perform actions. Again writing will scroll on your iPhone.
    14) I then had to run kIREmK 04.05.04.zip. Select “downgrade baseband” and “debug Boot” then click Start. Writing will scroll again. When it has finished you should be up and running.
    Good Luck

What version of Itunes are you using ? You dont need to update your Iphone from Itunes server, you have to manually update it to 1.1.4 from Itunes version 7.5, download filmare 1.1.4 provided link above, and in Itunes select Shift+Restore button in Itunes and locate this 1.1.4 filmware. See my comments above.

    Any ideas? Thanks

I am the same as Mark (above). I now have iTunes 7.5 and downloaded the 1.1.4 firmware. When I Shift + Restore it brings up Frimware folder, then into all_flash subfolder and dfu folder. i click on a component and get a 1601 message.

No idea what to do now..I just have a very dead iPhone.

  • Comment from Miles

Correction to previous message – I get Unknown error (1403)

  • Comment from YT

Mark you might have incorrect baseband, try to update your Iphone to 2.0 version by getting ITunes 7.7 latest version. This way you will update baseband to latest version also. After that uninstall Itunes 7.7 and install Itunes 7.5 and try this process again.

After a few tries I seemingly managed to get the phone unlocked the Ziphone software went through the “do it all” process and confirmed that the phone was unlocked. I managed to sync the phone with itunes and was even able to connect to the internet through my router. However, my friend’s t-mobile sim card does not seem to work with the unlocked iphone. And I am not sure why. Is there an extra step that I know about? Please let me know.

The instructions are great, but before I do any of this, I just have one small question.

After I uninstalled the new version of iTunes and downloaded the version you said, I noticed that I still have the back up file of my iphone in the preferences tab. For example, open i-tunes, go to Edit, then preferences, then Syncing, I see in the box it says “the following iphones and ipods are backed up on this computer.” Of course the backed file got there when I upgraded to v.2 of the iphone (i am really regretting this and I’m glad I found your step by step instructions). Anyways, should I just delete that backed up file or leave it there? I’m surprised it stayed there b/c I uninstalled the newest version of itunes and downloaded the version u suggested 7.5.0.20. Please respond soon, I really want to try this out and I hope it works. Thank you for everything!

  • Comment from jason

when i did it i did not have a backup file so if you want to be sure just copy that file to a different location and then run through the steps. I dont think you can use that restore point any more so if you delete it, it wont make much of a differce

if u guys r upgrading using ur 2g iphone (1st Gen) DONT, if u been using 1.4 b4 u do the upgrade chances r that ull get stuck in recovery mode like i did. If you are stuck in that mode ull have to restore the phone with 1.4 firmware, Most likely ull get a error during the first restore, ex error 6. Dun pay any attention to it, just redo the restore with the same firmware. If you have itunes 7 or itunes 8 RESTORE TO 1.4 OR 1.5 WILL NOT WORK itunes 7 only work for 2.0 and 2.1 If u want 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 use Itunes 8 but wait week til the jailbroken 1 comes out or u will b stuck in recovery mode during the upgrade

i got stuck on the dfu mode can’t turn to be a normal how can i do

  • Comment from 1man

Well done! I just finished downgrade my firmware from 2.2 back to 1.1.4 firmware.

First for all… everything goes smooth with the instruction but then ya’ll must follow carefully step 4 especially whenever u tryin to get to DFU mode (Device Firmware Upgrade)

    ———————————————-
4.Perform a full restore on your iPhone from iTunes

I am having a similar problem as patan. I am trying to downgrade a 1st generation iPhone from v2.2 to 1.1.4 and and I am at step 5. Now the iTunes screen has been stuck on “Restoring iPhone firmware” for about 30 minutes. The iPhone screen was initially black after entering DFU, but eventually went to the apple logo and the rotating circle of dashes below. How long does this process take or has it hung up? Any assistance would be appreciated.

” “Ziphone V3.0 has stopped working – a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you etc….”
Your ZiPhone is corrupted, uninstall it, delete it, and download it again.”

    how do i uninstall/delete it?

I have itunes 7.5 installed and have put my phone in DFU mode and whenever i try to restore it to 1.1.4 i get the “The iPhone could not be restore. An unknown error occurred (1604).” error right after the screen turns white and the little apple comes on the screen as the computer says “Preparing to restore iPhone”

can i downgrade my iphone 2.2.1 to 1.1.4 to force the baseband being downgraded ..thank’s

  • Comment from szu

when the firmware downgrade hangs for more than 20 minutes without an error message, most likely the downgrade is successful. just turn off the iphone and restart normally. then run ziphone to unlock, jailbreak, and activate. afterwards run the baseband downgrade. worked for me!!! thanks everyone!!!

  • Comment from Onez

jeetu I just had the same problem as you with the network. After you run ziphone to unlock, jailbreak and activate run the baseband downgrade and it should be all sweet. Thanks heaps to szu for the tip about it going for 20 mins without the error message. Just unplug iphone and run steps as above. Thanks heaps
