July 13th, 2003 Note: For those of you looking for an unlock for the new iPhone v2.0 firmware, IT IS NOT OUT YET! Check out our post on the current state of things for more details or come back to Code Retard in a few days. You can be sure we will cover how to do the unlock when it comes out.

So you just bought your iPhone and don’t want to commit to a 2-year agreement with AT&T. No problem! As long as you have a GSM provider (T-Mobile or AT&T) you can simply remove your existing SIM card from your current phone and put it in any unlocked iPhone and you can then use it freely without commitments. Earlier we posted about a video containing the steps to unlock the iPhone but some people are faster readers than watchers since you actually have to watch videos in their entirety. Plus our pictures are less blurry.

Step 1: Remove the SIM card from the iPhone

For more on that, see our earlier post on how to remove the AT&T SIM card that ships with the iPhone with a paper clip. Don’t put your own in yet, we still need to “activate” the phone.

Step 2: Connect the iPhone to iTunes

You’ll probably get some error message of sorts similar to this one:
itunes iphone activation dialog
Don’t worry too much about it, just click OK and proceed.

Step 3: Update the firmware

Once connected, iTunes will display the iPhone’s current firmware installed. If it’s not 1.1.4 (the latest one out right now) then you will need to upgrade it first before using the ZiPhone unlocking software. I have noticed from my experience that some phones required this step while others did not.
itunes update iphone firmware
Simply click on “Update” and let iTunes handle the rest. Once the download completes and the firmware is installed, the iPhone will restart. Ignore any subsequent warnings from iTunes if you get any.

Step 4: Unlock with ZiPhone

With iTunes still running, download and extract ZiPhone and run ZiPhoneGUI.exe. You will then be presented with the dialog below.
ziphone unlock on windows
Choose the “Do it All!” option or any other option you so desire. Note that it is customizable if you expand the Advanced Features.

Step 5: Watch ZiPhone work its magic

Once you’ve started the unlocking process, make sure you do not power off or disconnect the iPhone from your computer until it is fully complete. ZiPhone on your desktop will let you know once the process is done. Do not be alarmed if suddenly your iPhone goes into command line mode like so:
ziphone unlock on iphone
ZiPhone claims the process will take 10 minutes or probably less.

Conclusion

When the unlock completes, insert your own SIM card into the iPhone. You will notice two new icons on your iPhone menu, ZiPhone’s blog and the Installer. I immediately deleted the blog bookmark by holding the icon until it shook and clicking the “X” to remove it. However, do not delete the Installer as this is your portal to all sorts of nifty third party programs to run on your iPhone like TRIS, a touch Tetris game, or MxTube, a YouTube video downloader, and many others.

That was probably the worst thing that could have happened. I don’t think there is anything you can do about that.

I have an iphone version 2.0 and still locked with AT&T. when i tried using ZiPhone 3.0 click “do it all” to unlock it, when it starts to download, i accidentally interrupted the process, which resulted my iphone got hanged up. so what i did is i restored it thu itunes using the version 7.7. now my question are:

Can i directly use ZiPhone to unlock my iphone which i just restored?

do i have to upgrade the firmware to 1.1.4 or there’s no need since it has been restored to factory setting?

the sad this is, i no longer have the sim, so basically the iphone is useless, unless u will help me guys.

God Bless!

What version firmware does iTunes say your iPhone is on? Currently there’s no unlock out for v2.0 firmware so stick with 1.1.4 for the time being.

Is it possible to downgrade from V2.0 firmware to 1.1.4? if so,, how could it be done?

Jack and Badcobra:

It’s possible to restore your iPhones, just follow our post on downgrading firmware from v2.0 to v.1.1.4 including possibly the baseband.

Hi

if I buy iphoone from US , will it work in India , hw do i unlock it , can i use my existine SIM card

To unlock your iPhone on v1.1.4 firmware, simply read the directions here. Once unlocked, you can use it with any GSM carrier worldwide. However, your SIM card will be supplied by your carrier. Just think of the SIM card as a phone number. If the phone number changes, the SIM card changes.

hi, i just bought a new iphone (white) and i am thinking about using ziphone.

but my software version is on 2.0.2 , do you think ziphone will work on my version?

 Comment from adm_snackbar [August 19, 2008, 10:05 am]

That is doubtful. I don’t think ZiPhone works on 2.0 firmware, much less on a 3G. Consider QuickPwn.
