Why pay $0.99 from iTunes when you can make your own free iPhone ringtones with some free software? You can make it out of any MP3 or AAC file, and unlike iTunes where you have to look for that bell icon to see if it can be made into a ringtone, it is unrestricted, meaning you can choose any song from your library to be turned into a ringtone. The featured application today is Techlogg’s ToneShop, the latest build for Windows having just been released today.
ToneShop can convert the most popular audio file types:
- MP3
- WAV
- WMA
- M4A
Into these ringtone formats:
- MP3
- WAV (compressed and uncompressed)
- AAC (.M4A)
- Yamaha SMAF (.MMF)
- Apple iPhone (.M4R)
For our dastardly purposes we will focus on creating .M4R files which are the ringtone files that the iPhone will accept. Operation is straightforward:
- “Load” the audio file you want to create a ringtone from. One caveat is you need to make sure the file doesn’t have DRM, otherwise ToneShop cannot convert the file.
- Designate the directory and filename you want the ringtone to “Save” to. Note that the file save format will be .M4R since we are converting for the iPhone.
- Move the audio bar to where you want the ringtone to start. Then click “Start” to fill in the time automatically.
- Move the audio bar to where you want the ringtone to end. Make sure the total length of the ringtone does not exceed 40 seconds! If it is too long it will not be recognized by your iPhone. Then click “Finish” to fill in the time automatically.
- “Preview” the song to make sure it’s to your satisfaction. You can move the audio bar and click either “Start” or “Finish” to adjust the start and end times.
- Once you are satisfied, hit “Convert” and after a few seconds, your brand new free ringtone will be created.
- The final step is transferring the ringtones to your iPhone, which can be easily done with DiskAid
With minimal effort, you can turn any song in your library into a ringtone for your iPhone using ToneShop. The interface is simple to use and the GUI is merely a front end for the FFMPEG command line encoder. Get ToneShop here or go to the Techlogg website for the most up to date version.

Just wanted to say, thank you very much for this article. Toneshop was extremely easy to use and worked perfectly!! There is no reason why anyone should not be using this program. Thanks again!
GOOD!
I made the file perfectly fine, it worked
awesome and I was really excited until
it won’t go onto my iPhone!
I have no idea where to put the file
so that my phone sees it as a ringtone so
I can use it. The file exists but not on my
phone! :( help ?!
Easy to download. Convert file to mr4 option and it shows up as a ringtone to sync on phone. Found many so called solutions but this actually works!!! My god, it does what it says.
Look in your “My Documents” folder for the “My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Ringtones” directory. Drop all your .m4r ringtones in there and it will show up when you run iTunes.
Software crashes each time I run it
what version of windows are you running?
vista??
Worked great for me! Thanks.
An above-average program all the way! Beats having to pay 99 cents on iTunes! Thank you so much!!
for iphone

Make sure that you’ve got your ringtones set to synchronize. :)
