Why Metal Gear Solid 4 Sucks!

/* Posted September 5th, 2008 at 9:35am [Comments: 13] */
/* Filed under PS3, Sony, Video Games */

There are tons of things that you simply cannot understand no matter how hard you try. Stuff like “Why people watch American Idol” and “Are turn signals really that hard to use”. Everyone has things that they simply cannot grasp. Here are mine for today:

Why do people like Metal Gear Solid 4?

I don’t get what people find so appealing about these games… they aren’t games. They are hours and hours of mind bogglingly bad FMV sequences punctuated with the occasional part you get to play a very repetitious game. It’s like watching a really, really badly written and poorly acted hong kong sci fi movie that takes itself way too seriously and every hour or so you can push some buttons on your remote but no matter what you do your actions cannot avoid, change, prevent or otherwise improve the plodding, heavy handed story. Throw in more inane plot twists, completely immature poop jokes, shameless self exposition and more shallow one dimensional characters than your average soap opera and you have Metal Gear Solid. I think I loathe it as much as Halo now. It’s like being forced to listen to your crazy uncle prattle on and on and on about his conspiracy theories just so you might possibly get him to give you a dollar. I can understand liking the actual game that is hidden between all the crap sandwiches but you STILL have to take repeated bites of a very large crap sandwich to play it. It’s like telling someone you’ll give them some candy… if they let you hit them in the hand with a hammer for four hours first. I question the fans of this series taste repeatedly in my mind. If it was somehow possible to remove all the crap from Metal Gear Solid and leave you with just the game I would probably think highly of it… but if you remove all the crap then you have a game that would last about an hour… Read more »

Sony PSP 3000 to hit UK in October

/* Posted September 4th, 2008 at 12:36am [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under PSP, Sony, Video Games */

The new Sony PSP 3000 is heading out to the UK during the month of October. I personally can’t wait to get my hands on one!

According to Sony Europe boss David Reeves the handheld will hit the region on October 17th and cost GBP 149.99. The new model will only cost about GBP 10 more than the current Slim and Lite hardware SKU giving consumers options when they go out to buy the PSP.

The PSP-3000 has a silver finish and a brighter screen as well as a built-in microphone. Europe has the option to buy the PSP-3000 bundle with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters for EUR 199.

For the same price you can purchase an “entertainment” bundle which includes a 4GB memory card but no game for the same price.

The Slim and Lite PSP will be phased out added David Reeves who said there might be a limited time price cut on the model to help clear the shelves.

And if you missed it, some of the key improvements will include:
The PSP-3000 has a setting for “Color Space” under the system settings section of the XMB. This can be switched between Wide and Normal. Wide exploits the full color depth of the revised hardware, while Normal returns you back to PSP-2000 level color.

The 3000 firmware has an option for Automatic USB Connection. When this is switched on, the PSP switches to USB mode automatically when a USB device is connected.

Finally, the 3000 firmware offers a noise reduction feature for video out. This is used to cut the noise when outputting the PSP’s video signal to a television.

Don’t Mess with Elmo Guitar Hero

/* Posted September 3rd, 2008 at 9:13am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Hardware, Mods, Sony, Toys, Video Games */

Just because you’re a two-year-old with an Elmo guitar doesn’t mean you can’t rock out on Guitar Hero with the big boys. Thanks to modder Nextonex’s efforts, his daughter will be able to do just that with her improved Elmo guitar which boasts playback compatibility with Guitar Hero on the PlayStation. The Elmo guitar had all the right ingredients: a strum bar, a whammy bar, and four neck buttons to make this awesome mod possible. With the innards of a PSOne controller (apparently this won’t work easily with a PS2 controller), some soldering skills and some elbow grease, Nextonex was able to convert a child’s toy into a lethal musical weapon. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for that lucky little girl to become a Guitar Hero legend one day.

Apple Removes Tris Tetris App from App Store

/* Posted September 2nd, 2008 at 9:10pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Apps, Video Games, iPhone */

We’ve long been fans of Tris when it started as a fun jailbroken app which brought a (slightly) new dimension to Tetris by relying on touch to move the pieces around. When the App Store launched shortly after the 3G iPhone debut, Tris was ported over to the new 2.0 firmware and available to download and play, that is until a few days ago. The Tetris police apparently caught wind of the app and ordered Apple to take it down. Noah Witherspoon, the college student creator of Tris, reports that he doesn’t have the “time, energy, or resources to fight this battle right now.” So until Noah becomes suddenly rich in time and money, say good bye to Tris.

Nintendo Happy - Wii and DS sales = Higher Profit

/* Posted September 1st, 2008 at 11:23pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under DS, News, Nintendo, Video Games, Wii */

Even though the US economy is in the pits, that doesn’t mean Japan or Nintendo has to worry. Nintendo has now raised it forecasted profit for the fiscal year by 26 percent, citing exceptionally strong sales of the Wii and DS around the world.

The company expects its net income to jump 59 percent to JPY 410 billion, the equivalent of 3.8 billion USD for the year ending March 31st. Nintendo believes sales of the Wii will grow 42 percent for the year and has reversed previous comments that the DS will see sales drop offs.

“This is a very big, positive surprise,” noted Koichi Takatsuka, a senior fund manager at United Investments. “It looks like Wii and DS are selling well, especially in Europe.”

The news prompted Nintendo’s stock to jump almost 10 percent on the Osaka Securities Exchange.

Rock Band

The complete Rock Band 2 track list has been known for some time but the ratings have not. IGN has categorized the track listing into each instrument and sorted them according to difficulty. The only list we care about (full band) starts off easy with Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger and ends with Judas Priest’s Painkiller. We’re showing the difficulties based on a full band starting with the easiest, but for the complete list check out IGN. Read more »
