SharePoint 2010 Beta Install: Application Server Role: Web Server (IIS) Role

I was trying to install SharePoint 2010 and what i found was that it was restarting over and over again. It restarted the server 8 times before i decided to look at the logs, it seems like it was having problems configuing the IIR Roles:

“Multiple Server restarts on Error with Configuring Application Server Role, Web Server”
and
“Application Server Role: Web Server (IIS) Role: configuration error – pending restart of the computer”

Solution:
It seems that you CANNOT have Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 installed before you install SharePoint 2010. I rolled back to a previous VM where i did not install VS2k10 and then ran in prereq install and everything worked.

Restore Navigation Buttons after Firefox 3 Switch

I upgraded to Firefox 3 today and after the switch I found out that I had lost my left and right navigation buttons. After floundering for a bit, I was able to restore them quite easily but at the expense of my current toolbar layout and settings.

If your problem isn’t as severe as mine, it might be as easy as right clicking on the toolbar and selecting “Customize…”

From there it’s as easy as dragging the left and right direction buttons back onto your toolbar. If that doesn’t work you could also try clicking on the “Restore Default Set” button boxed in red below. I must warn you that this will delete your layout and restore state it was at the very first day you ran Firefox.

In my case, neither method worked so I had to take a drastic measure. I closed Firefox and then backed up this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\localstore.rdf

and deleted it from my profile. After starting Firefox again, I got my navigation toolbar back (and tons of other junk I had cleaned out).

But while we’re at it, I’ll show you my current toolbar layout. I use a highly customized setting where I don’t even bother with the navigation and bookmark toolbars since vertical space is a precious commodity. Have a look:

To rid myself of the navigation bar, I simply moved the navigation, home, refresh, and stop buttons to the top toolbar because let’s face it, it’s just a waste of space past “Tools.” I also moved the address bar up there as well. Turns out there’s still quite a bit of usable space if you do this. Then I hid the navigation and bookmark toolbars since I already had everything I needed in the top toolbar.

I also tweaked my chrome\userChrome.css file in my profile to eliminate unnecessary buttons when applicable. What I mean is I don’t get the stop button when there’s nothing to stop, the forward button when there is no page to go forward to and so forth. The code to add in your userChrome.css file is quite simple and the comments describe what each accomplishes:

I have a tweak to remove the Go button because it really isn’t necessary when all you have to do is hit “Enter.” I also have a tweak to widen the tab I am currently browsing just so I know where I am. These tweaks will allow you to maximize your vertical browsing space and once you get used to it I’m sure you won’t ever go back to the old inefficient layout.

Find Virtual Console and Wii Ware Block Sizes

If you’ve discovered how to install virtual console WAD file channels onto your Wii, then you’ve probably asked yourself at least once, “Do I have enough free blocks on my Wii to fit ___ game?” We already warned you that trying to install all VC games in existence would fill up your Wii memory pretty quickly so the trick is to pick and choose the games you want to play while maximizing your memory usage. Doing so would require knowing the block size requirements of each game. Emacs Keyword Syntax Highlighting for Verilog, Specman Elite

If you’re an avid Unix user you’ve probably used Emacs at one point or another. Ever wonder how sometimes when you open up a file (like .cpp) the editor is able to highlight and color all the right keywords pertaining to the programming language the file is coded in? The secret is in the .emacs file located in your home directory. I’ve worked with both Verilog and Specman Elite files before, and found the correct code to add in the .emacs file to enable the beautiful keyword syntax highlighting/coloring that makes the code much more readable.

For Verilog, place this verilog-mode.el file in the “~/elisp” directory. If it does not exist, create it. Then copy and paste this in at the end of your .emacs file (because that’s the safest place to put your own customizations:

Advanced CVS and SVN Tips and Tricks

I’m listing a few tips and tricks for CVS and SVN that I’ve learned through the years. You’re required to at least have some basic knowledge, this list isn’t a basic usage guide. It’s not a list of basic tips either. These are specifically purposed advanced usage scenarios and the appropriate commands to execute to achieve them. Now that you’ve been informed, let’s start.

Tip #1: How do I to find what are the CVS commits between 2 different dates on a branch?

cvs log -SN -d "2005/8/15<2005/10/27" -r:HEAD

Where August 8, 2005 and October 27, 2005 are the two date ranges you want to specify and “HEAD” is the branch name.

Tip #2: I accidentally checked in a binary file as a text file, how do I fix it?

cvs admin -kb my_binary_file.bin

Remember that the “-kb” is the very same flag you should have specified (but did not do) when you did the first add of the binary file to the repository. This beats removing the file from the repository and adding it again with the binary option.

Tip #3: I checked in a revision for a file that I want to take back, how do I delete it permanently from the CVS repository?

cvs admin -o 1.5 my_file.cpp

Note that you should substitute “1.5″ with the revision you want to remove. After executing this command, the file gets deleted from your checkout so you’ll need to execute an update to bring back the previous revision. That way, you won’t have any issues the next time you work with this file. Be very careful when you use this as you may break existing tags and branches. For example, you may have had revision 1.5 tagged but it now no longer exists in the repository.

Tip #4: How do I ignore whitespace in an SVN diff?

svn diff --diff-cmd diff -x -b myfile.cpp

Where in “–diff-cmd ” we are specifying the Unix “diff” as the diff tool and with “-x ” we are specifying the arguments to pass to the “diff” command. The default would be “-u” but in our case we want to ignore whitespace as well so we use “-b.”

Tip #5: How do specify a date in an SVN diff?

svn diff -r"{2006-07-14}:{2006-07-21}" myfile.cpp

This performs a diff on myfile.cpp between July 14, 2006 and July 21, 2006. While this may not seem like an advanced use case, when specifying dates in SVN it is actually not properly documented that the double quotes are necessary, not in svn help diff nor the official manual. To just update using a date, again use the double quotes:

svn update -r"{2006-08-01}" myfile.cpp

Tip #6: How do I link to an external SVN repository in my SVN repository?

svn propset svn:externals "link_name http://coderetard.com/svn/trunk/link_dir" .

Treat external links as symbolic links: if the linked contents are updated, they will be updated in your repository. Note that the opposite is also true, so consider linking to the external repository’s tag if you do not wish for the contents to change. You can also specify a revision number that will always get checked out, so if you ever decide to revisit your old checkout, it will be linked with correspondingly old external links so you won’t break your code. To specify a revision, say 1024, it would look like this:

svn propset svn:externals "link_name -r1024 http://coderetard.com/svn/trunk/link_dir" .

To specify more than one link, type the [link_name] [link_dir_url] combos for each link on separate lines into a file (we’ll call it my_link_file.txt in the command below), then use:

svn propset svn:externals -F my_link_file.txt .

The . at the end of the command is important as it specifies which directory’s svn:externals property should be modified (in this case, the present working directory). To find out what directories are linked, use:

svn proplist --verbose .

To delete the external property, simply run:

svn propdel svn:externals .

Because they had the option. The old saying â€œmen are only as faithful as their optionsâ€ can sometimes ring true. Men donâ€™t get offered sex as often as women so when the opportunity does arise, it can be very difficult for them to turn it down.
It boosts their ego. Sometimes men donâ€™t feel like they are attractive to the opposite sex any more and when a woman shows some interest, not only does a man react, he may allow her to stroke his ego and more. Thereâ€™s nothing like the thrill of the chase to men on the hunt. When they are finally rewarded for their efforts, their egos swell even larger.
You grow apart. Maybe the two of you didnâ€™t have as much in common as you thought. Heâ€™s met a woman who has more in common with him who loves football or plays golf. He may check out if he is compatible with her under the sheets also.
You argue a lot. Men will sometimes cheat to get away from an overly critical or argumentative partner. Who wants to be around someone who is constantly on them about something.
Heâ€™s fallen out of love. Sometimes men become so comfortable in a relationship, they donâ€™t know how to get out. They may be staying in the relationship because of children or financial reasons. However, they feel like they are missing out on love and may seek it out elsewhere. In their mind, this is as close to win-win as they can get.
Your sex life sucks. If a man has a disinterested partner or isnâ€™t getting enough sex to fulfill him, there is a good chance he will have an affair. Because you have allowed it in the past. If you have forgiven a cheating man a couple of times, they are more than likely going to cheat again because they already know if they plead enough, you will forgive them.
