ESPN and ABC have announced that they will be adding video content to the Veoh Web video service.

The agreement will allow Veoh to present hit shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Ugly Betty” and “Desperate Housewives,” as well as ESPN programming and game highlights.

Matt Murphy, the senior vice president for digital media distribution at Disney and ESPN Media Networks, added: “These types of partnerships allow us to reach our fans and viewers in a much deeper and more meaningful way…This is a world where you have to constantly re-evaluate your business and constantly look at partners and how they are running their businesses.”

There was no word on any of the financial aspects of the latest deal.

Turn PS3 into a Media Server with TVersity

/* Posted June 22nd, 2008 at 4:35pm [Comments: 11] */

ps3 tversity media server

An oft forgotten and little known feature of your Sony PS3 is its media server capabilities which allows it to stream videos off your computer and display it on your TV. Too bad, because those who’ve overlooked this feature are missing out on, in my opinion, one of the best features about the PS3 besides its Blu-Ray playing and awesome DVD upscaling capabilities. What prevents people from using their PS3s as media servers is not anything to do with the PS3 itself, but rather they don’t know that they need their PCs involvement to act as the media server and they don’t know how to turn it into one to begin with.

Let’s rewire your preconceptions a bit before proceeding. Read more »

Netflix to stream movies through Xbox 360?

/* Posted June 2nd, 2008 at 2:59pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Microsoft, Movies & Shows, Xbox */

xbox 360 netflix

Analysts at Wedbush Morgan Securities have reported that there is the likely possibility that Netflix will strike a deal with Microsoft to stream movies through the Xbox 360.

The report came after the investment banking firm looked through comments made by Netflix management. If the report turns out to be true, the popular online rental service would be able to stream movie directly to million’s of consumer’s gaming consoles.

“As we have speculated in the past, we believe that one of Netflix’s partners is Microsoft. We arrive at this conclusion based upon Netflix management repeatedly mentioning ‘Internet enabled video game consoles’,” said a Wedbush Morgan statement.

“While there are three such consoles, only one - Microsoft’s Xbox 360 - has a sufficiently large installed base to make sense from a streaming partnership with Netflix.”

“The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions. The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure,” it added.

The “measure of technological sophistication” would most likely involve Roku’s new Netflix set-top box which allows users to stream movies to their TVs using Netflix’s Instant Watch feature.

In January, Netflix gave a survey to subscribers on whether they would like the possibility of having movies streamed to their consoles.

Downloadyoutubevideos presents youtube videos downloading. Streaming is a nice way of previewing videos without downloading them but whenever anyone finds a video that they like, obviously they want to download it. YouTube is a wonderful site that has spearheaded the live streaming video movement online. One complaint that people often have about YouTube is that while you can stream to your hearts content, there is no easy way of downloading your favorites for viewing at another time. Now there is a better option for those looking at downloading YouTube videos to desktop. Simply type in the URL of the video link that you’d like to download and Downloadyoutubevideos takes care of the rest. Along with providing you with the ability to download, they also provide the option of browsing through your most recent downloads and those of other users, or of checking out the most viewed videos in any given week. The traffic will be busier because downloadyoutubevideos.com and YouTube will have their popularity increasing.

How to Bypass Video on stock radios - Infinity/Nissan

/* Posted May 8th, 2008 at 8:22am [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Mods, Movies & Shows */

This mod is “do at your own risk” and is not intended for use on public roadways while driving.

I have an aftermarket DVD player feeding the A/V input in the center console. The car does not have Nav; just the stock monitor. The problem that has to be overcome is 2 parts. First, the E-Brake signal has to be grounded. That’s pretty common. I located the wire in the back of the harness and grounded it. But once I got above 4 mph, just like others who have done the E-Brake ground, my video shut off. So obviously there was a speed sense wire somewhere as well. Well, I took the dash back apart and located the speed sense wire. Conveniently, it was right next to the E-Brake ground! Here is a picture of the harness:

Uwe Boll wants to knock Michael Bay out!

/* Posted April 27th, 2008 at 5:43pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Movies & Shows */

Uwe Boll, known for his movie adaptions of video games, wants to fight Transformers director, Michael Bay, in a boxing ring.  After claims from Michael Bay of not caring about the German director, the heart broken and insulted Boll wants to settle their differences (and determined who is the better director) in the ring at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.  If Bay accepts the challenge, the fight will take place in September of this year.

Although this editor at Code Retard is not a fan of both directors, he hopes that Uwe Boll will kick Bay’s ass especially for the latter in directing the film, Bad Boys 2.

Blu-ray sales grow, but home video revenue still down

/* Posted April 27th, 2008 at 1:09am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Blu-Ray, HDTV, Movies & Shows, News */

Despite large growth in the high definition market, standard DVD sales continue to sag, and home video revenue will continue to fall, report a few notable analysts.

According to Reuters, 5 million HD movies have already been sold this year (mainly Blu-ray) and that puts the pace far ahead then 2007 which saw only 10 million movies sold for the entire year.

This strong growth however is not enough to make up for the continued sagging sales of standard definition DVDs. In 2006, movie studios generated $25 billion USD in revenue for home video releases. In 2007 the number fell to $23 billion and Citigroup analyst Jason Bazinet believes that number will fall again this year to $21.4 billion.

Analysts also feel that consumers see less benefit in upgrading to Blu-ray then they did with the switch from VHS to DVD. Many consumers don’t even have the necessary equipment to enjoy Blu-ray, including Blu-ray players, HDTVs or surround sound setups. Price of course is another significant barrier with most Blu-ray players costing about $400 USD, about $250 USD more expensive than even the best upscaling standard DVD players.

Sony Electronics CEO Stan Glasgow agreed in March that a price drop was necessary for more market penetration but that the necessary $200 price point wont be available until at least 2009.

“I don’t think $200 is going to happen this year. Next year $200 could happen,” said Glasgow. “We’ll be at a $300 rate this year. $299 will happen this year.”

Another factor is that Blu-ray movies usually sell at a $15 dollar premium over their standard definition counterpart (yes, even at Amazon) making the alternative not as pretty usually despite its much improved audio and video.
