Upgrading HP Pavilion Slimline 3000z Series (The AMD one)

/* Posted June 4th, 2008 at 3:05pm [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Hardware, How-To, Mods */

I recently bought a Slimline HP Desktop to use has a nice little media center. I ended up buying a lower end model so that I could change out and upgrade the pieces and save money, and not have to buy the over priced higher end units. Here is the research I found on this system.

Installing DD-WRT Firmware on a Linksys WRT150N / WRT160N Wireless Router

/* Posted May 30th, 2008 at 4:46pm [Comments: 29] */
/* Filed under Hardware, How-To, Mods, Networking */

linksys wrt150n wireless router

Recently I bought a new Linksys WRT150N wireless router because I was fed up with my current one and because I had heard the famed DD-WRT firmware could be installed on it, effectively turning a cheap router into an expensive one. My old SMC router would drop connections about once a month and it really lacked the customizability that I required for my networking needs. For example, do you know how much of a pain it is to forward port ranges one port at a time with a 10 port limit? I also was not able to assign static IPs to my computers within the subnet (though to give my even older router credit, I could do this before).

I’ve documented the steps so you can follow along too should you decide one day that your standard router firmware just isn’t doing enough for you. Though these steps are for the Linksys WRT150N router, they are pretty much applicable to any router (that can support DD-WRT that is). Read more »

Unlock iPhone Steps Using ZiPhone with Pics

/* Posted May 23rd, 2008 at 2:41pm [Comments: 12] */
/* Filed under Apple, Mods, iPhone */

July 13th, 2003 Note: For those of you looking for an unlock for the new iPhone v2.0 firmware, IT IS NOT OUT YET! Check out our post on the current state of things for more details or come back to Code Retard in a few days. You can be sure we will cover how to do the unlock when it comes out.

So you just bought your iPhone and don’t want to commit to a 2-year agreement with AT&T. No problem! As long as you have a GSM provider (T-Mobile or AT&T) you can simply remove your existing SIM card from your current phone and put it in any unlocked iPhone and you can then use it freely without commitments. Earlier we posted about a video containing the steps to unlock the iPhone but some people are faster readers than watchers since you actually have to watch videos in their entirety. Plus our pictures are less blurry. Read more »

Mario Kart Wii

If you semi-bricked your Wii by performing the update on an imported Mario Kart disc (or similar game) that did not match your Wii’s region, and was wondering what you were going to do with your gimped Wii, you’re in luck. These ISOs are fix disc images that contain the latest update from Nintendo’s server for each Wii region, namely NTSU-J (Japan), NTSC-U (USA), and PAL (Europe). To restore your Wii back to its former glory: Read more »

Apple NesRemote: NES Controller Turned Apple Remote

/* Posted May 21st, 2008 at 3:17pm [Comments: none] */

Apple NesRemote

Instructables modder Agurri, inspired by the idea of stuffing an iPod Shuffle inside a classic Nintendo remote, decided to do the same thing but for his Apple Remote and post the instructions on the web for all to enjoy. If you’ve got a soldering iron, a Dremel and aren’t afraid to open up your hardware, then you might want to give this a go or do something similar. The NesRemote as he calls it has full functionality so the directional arrows and A, B, start and select buttons all work. Check out the cool video of the modded NES remote in action below:

fring on iPhone

This method REQUIRES a WiFi connection and jailbroken iPhone!!!

Thanks goes to Unique311 at internettablettalk for first showing me how to do this on the Nokia N800/N810 Internet Tablets. I’m sure others came before him on the PC method. What’s new is it now works on the iPhone.

You need 3 accounts:

1) grandcentral at www.grandcentral.com (Edit: This should be your first check - they look to be closed for new users)
2) gizmo at www.gizmoproject.com
3) Fring on your iPhone (www.fring.com)

Watch gigafied’s video to get started:

Orb Networks can stream live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch

/* Posted May 12th, 2008 at 9:20am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Mods, News, iPhone, iPod */

Orb Networks is claiming that they have developed “the world’s first way to stream live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch.”

OrbLive, as the application is called, will work with “jailbroken” iPhones and iPod Touches. Despite being the “first” to make an application of the sort, it is really not all that special. Users install the Orb streaming application on their TV-tuner enabled PCs and OrbLive on their handheld devices. You then set the PC to live TV and stream it directly using the Wi-Fi.

Adds Orb’s CEO, Joe Costello, “Although the iPhone provides users with a great way to experience the Web, it offers a ridiculously sub-par streaming video experience. When all the carriers’ free phones can stream lots of things that my iPhone can’t, something’s seriously wrong. OrbLive finally brings the iPhone’s streaming video experience up to par with other mobile phones.”
