It’s time to upgrade the memory in your brand new Asus Eee PC. Don’t worry. It’s really easy. The hardest part is buying the memory for the upgrade. Luckily for us, the Eee uses standard laptop memory - 200 pin DDR2 So-Dimm. I went with Crucial. You’ll have to buy only 1 so-dimm. Don’t purchase a pair.
Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. A set of precision screwdrivers
  2. The memory
  3. Of course, your Asus Eee PC

Cannon camera hack

The Canon Hacker’s Development Kit, aka CHDK, is a firmware enhancement that supports an impressive array of Canon digital cameras. I emphasize the enhancement aspect of CHDK because the tool is non-permanent and non-destructive, meaning that you load it onto your camera whenever you want to use it; CHDK makes no changes to your camera, and turning it off is simply a matter of restarting your camera. Installing CHDK involves copying a couple of files onto your camera’s memory card; permanently removing it from your camera entails deleting those files. It’s simple and powerful (sort of like hacking your router firmware) but even easier.

This mod is “do at your own risk” and is not intended for use on public roadways while driving.

I have an aftermarket DVD player feeding the A/V input in the center console. The car does not have Nav; just the stock monitor. The problem that has to be overcome is 2 parts. First, the E-Brake signal has to be grounded. That’s pretty common. I located the wire in the back of the harness and grounded it. But once I got above 4 mph, just like others who have done the E-Brake ground, my video shut off. So obviously there was a speed sense wire somewhere as well. Well, I took the dash back apart and located the speed sense wire. Conveniently, it was right next to the E-Brake ground! Here is a picture of the harness:

Virtual Console Games

Wii gamers have been able to download their favorite virtual console games from the Wii Shop channel and install them as channels in the main menu for a while now, but each download costs some number of points and we all know those points aren’t free. A recent development in the Wii homebrew scene has enabled the capability to extract these virtual console games as .WAD files and with the help of some software, install them onto other Wii consoles without going through the Wii shop channel and without paying. Before we go into details, let’s first list some reasons why you should not do this. Firstly, you can already play loads more NES, SNES, Gameboy Color, and heck even Sega games through the various emulators available as Wii homebrew, so why bother with this just to get a few pretty channels on your Wii menu? Second, you risk Nintendo’s wrath because this mod is detectable. Third, you’ll fill up all your Wii memory blocks if you try to install too many WADs. Still want to persevere? Then we shall continue…

PS3 controller

One industrious modder out there has created a simple program so you can use your PS3’s SIXAXIS controller on a PC like a game pad. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Download this archive and install the filter driver (libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.10.1.exe).
2. Unpack ps3sixaxis_en.exe
3. Plug the SIXAXIS into your PC.
4. Run ps3sixaxis_en.exe once.
5. Push the PS button on the SIXAXIS once if it doesn’t see it straight away.

Unfortunately, the motion sensing features aren’t possible on the PC (not yet as least). But still, this is pretty easy way to net yourself a free usable game pad

wifi

First, download from Network Stumbler’s website.

Then install it and find out which channels other wireless networks in your neighborhood are on.
Then select a channel that is not near anyone else’s channels. This little tip I got when I used to work as an IT manager did help when our company network was in the same wireless channel as 20 other companies.

Of course, this might not help your wireless network if you don’t have that much interference in the first place but it does help since 99% of all wireless networks default to Channel 6.

Just go to Google and type, “inurl:ViewerFrame?Mode=Refresh” and you can find all sorts of unsecured surveillance cameras.

Nintendo Wii

The Savegame Extractor application allows you to copy a game save from your Wii to a SD card (including those game saves that you can not copy through the system menu, NTSC Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 anyone?).

To Use Savegame Extractor:

  1. Execute the save-extractor_v1 application through the Twilight Hack.
  2. Insert the game DVD and press RESET or A button (Wiimote not supported).

Now that you’re able to extract game saves, what good is it if you can’t trade them with your friends and install them back on to your Wii?
