PSP Maps: Get Maps on your PSP

/* Posted August 28th, 2008 at 4:18pm [Comments: 2] */
/* Filed under Google, How-To, Mods, PSP, Sony */

PSP-Maps is a tool that allows you to browse Google Maps, Virtual Earth and Yahoo Maps with your PSP and its WiFi connection. You can move around the map, zoom in and out, cycle through the different available views, search for an address, load/save favorites, etc.

It includes a cache system so you can browse later the maps you have previously seen, even if you don’t have WiFi available. There is also a PC version if you don’t have WiFi at all, so you can build a cache on your computer and copy it to your PSP.

Technically, PSP-Maps connects directly to the servers to fetch the images, it does not use the provided APIs since there are usually in JavaScript and not convenient for a homebrew.

How to Disable Apple’s iPhone “Kill Switch”

/* Posted August 21st, 2008 at 2:10pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

Earlier this month, iPhone application developers discovered a hidden kill switch in the latest iPhone firmware (2.0+). The kill switch allows Apple to remotely delete or disable any unauthorized applications running on your iPhone, including any cracked Monkey Balls or Crash Bandicoots. The code contains a string called “unauthorizedApps” whose purpose is unknown. Apple acknowledged the existence of the hidden kill switch but claimed that it was not currently in use. Steve Jobs did not outwardly deny that it would never be used, merely saying that he hoped it would never have to happen. Whatever that means…

At any rate, jailbroken 2.0 iPhone users are in luck as BossPrefs version 2.12b contains a way to disable the kill switch to prevent any such thing from happening. Read more »

How to Reset HP Pavilion Recovery CD One Limit Restriction

/* Posted August 12th, 2008 at 8:30am [Comments: 10] */
/* Filed under How-To */

Many HP desktops nowadays don’t ship with any restore CDs any longer. Instead, they use a hidden disk partition at your own hard disk’s memory cost to hold the recovery data at several gigs worth too. Users are allowed to make a CD or DVD recovery disc but that is a one-time operation due to licensing agreements with Microsoft without any way to reset the restriction. While I don’t recommend you to burn 13 CD-Rs to make your recovery disc, 2-3 DVD-Rs is a welcome security in case any misfortune should befall upon your computer. Plus once you do so you can repartition and free up the recovery partition to recover some memory back (at your own risk of course). But what happens when you encounter an error during the burn process? Or you lose your recovery CDs? Or the HP recovery disc maker software gets corrupted somehow? Read more »

How to Install iPhone 2.0.1 Firmware IPSW with winpwn 2.0.0.4

/* Posted August 11th, 2008 at 11:37pm [Comments: 71] */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

iphone 2.0 snapshot

As of today, winpwn 2.0.0.4 finally supports iPhone 2.0.1 firmware IPSW creation. Now you can install jailbroken (and possibly unlocked) 2.0.1 firmware on your 2.5G or 3G iPhones. Again, unlock is only supported on the 1st-gen 2.5G iPhone, so 3G iPhone users will have to make do with jailbreaking for the time being. To get your iPhone to run on the latest 2.0.1 firmware, it’s a very similar process to the 2.0 ipsw firmware installation. Read more »

How to Install Windows XP on Your PS3

/* Posted August 11th, 2008 at 8:25am [Comments: 3] */
/* Filed under How-To, Linux, Microsoft, PS3, Sony, Windows */

ps3 linux

Earlier we covered how to get Windows Vista running on your PS3 but because of its lag time it truly wasn’t useful for much else than a demonstration of how far we can stretch the PS3. If you want something that’s actually somewhat usable, Windows XP is a far better option and that’s exactly what we’re going to cover today. The basic principle is similar so Windows XP runs on an emulation layer on Linux on the PS3. Read more »

How to Install Windows Vista on Your PS3

/* Filed under How-To, Linux, Microsoft, PS3, Sony, Windows */

There’s no reason why you should do this as it’s completely unusable (consider the 25 minute boot time to start it up) plus you need Linux installed first just so you can get the emulation layer in place to run Windows Vista, but if you really want to be l33t h4×0r or are just really bored, simply follow these steps to install Windows Vista on your PS3. How to Install Linux on Your PS3

/* Posted August 6th, 2008 at 8:05am [Comments: 8] */
/* Filed under How-To, Linux, PS3, Sony */

ps3 linux

One of the nifty built-in features on the PS3 is its unabashed support for installing an operating system on it, namely Linux. We recommend that you to at least upgrade the hard drive just so you have enough room for the OS and your game and media data. The PS3 is pretty much nearly a computer and having Linux installed on top of it really reaffirms this. Because it’s so powerful yet so cheap with Linux installed, it’s actually become somewhat of a favored research tool in academia. Hopefully you’re excited now as you’re going to need that enthusiasm to carry yourself through these very involved steps. Above all else, have patience. Read more »

Wii ISO Compressor WiiScrubber 1.30 Final Release

/* Posted August 5th, 2008 at 9:59am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under How-To, Nintendo, Wii */

wiiscrubber 1.30

The latest and final release of WiiScrubber 1.30 was just released a few days ago by its developer Dack. Use WiiScrubber to prepare any Wii or GameCube ISO for compression to trim its disk space. By replacing unused portions of the full disk image with the same bit, it allows a compression tool to offer better compression and make the file smaller. Scrubbing an ISO is always useful if you’re sending or sharing an ISO with other people or for personal backup storage purposes as normally each ISO is 4.7GB. It also allows you to extract and replace files within an ISO image. WiiScrubber 1.30 comes with a list of new improvements: Read more »
