Why pay $0.99 from iTunes when you can make your own with some free software? You can make it out of any MP3 or AAC file, and unlike iTunes where you have to look for that bell icon to see if it can be made into a ringtone, it is unrestricted, meaning you can choose any song from your library to be turned into a ringtone. The featured application today is Techlogg’s ToneShop, the latest build for Windows having just been released today. Read more »

Crack Windows Passwords with Ophcrack

/* Posted April 3rd, 2008 at 8:01am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apps, Linux, Mac, Windows */

If you didn’t want to change other users’ passwords on Windows using the method covered in this post because it would have been too obvious, there is a better more subtle way to do it with some good old password cracking software. Now assuming you actually have an account on the computer that you’re going to infiltrate like the hack in the previous post requires, password cracking is a simple matter of installing the right tool: and that would be ophcrack, a freeware, open source password cracker. Play Old DOS Games on Any OS with DOSBox

/* Posted April 2nd, 2008 at 8:30am [Comments: none] */

Leisure Suite Larry Screen

In the same nostalgic spirit that EA is offering Command & Conquer for free download to celebrate twelve years since its release, we’re covering a wonderful application that will let you take the nostalgia even further… in the form of old DOS games. If you’re asking, What’s DOS? my answer is exactly, it’s that old. If your first experience with a PC was with Windows 95 or after, then you’ll have no clue what I’m talking about. We old-schoolers used to have to boot Windows from the DOS prompt (heck, we old-schoolers didn’t even have Windows) and we weren’t complaining. You know why? Because of all the awesome games out there on DOS. I’m talking about Monkey Island, Wolfenstein, Dune 2, King’s Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry. Read more »

/* Filed under Apps, Nintendo, Video Games, Wii */

Mr Mirakichi one of the icons of the PSP scene that brought a mass of Japanese hackers into PSP Homebrew has now released the first public version of his Gameboy Color Emulator for the Nintendo Wii. Here’s a video of the emulator running. Boy, seeing GBC Zelda running from the Wii Zelda Twilight Hack is kind of surreal.

Saving Paper and Ink: How to Go Paperless

/* Posted April 1st, 2008 at 9:27am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apps, Life */

Go Paperless

I never receive any bank statements or credit card statements in the mail anymore. Why should I? It uses our precious resources and costs us all money. Plus it wastes my already limited physical storage space. Before I went paperless, I used to leave my statements in a filing cabinet to rot, never looking at them again after I first received them. Banks and credit card companies all do business online nowadays, and it’s supremely easy to print your statement from their websites if you enroll in their online services. Don’t get me wrong, I still collect all my bank and credit card statements, I just store them in an infinitely more convenient place: my hard drive. If you have Adobe Acrobat, you can simply save your monthly bank statement as a PDF file and file it away somewhere on your hard drive. Same goes for credit card statements. Read more »

iPhone Firmware 2.0 Already Hacked

/* Posted March 30th, 2008 at 12:05pm [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Apple, Apps, Mods, iPhone */

iPhone 2.0 Jailbroken

The iPhone Dev Team has reportedly already hacked the newest firmware (version 2.0) for the iPhone, having gotten their hands on it through the iPhone SDK. The firmware disk image was decrypted and jailbroken, meaning that apps can run on the 2.0 firmware without requiring a development certificate from Apple. Great to know these guys are on top of their game providing freedom to the masses.

Add Virtual Desktops to Windows

/* Posted March 29th, 2008 at 2:32pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apps, Microsoft, Windows */

VirtuaWin Screen 1 VirtuaWin Screen 3

Linux users out there are probably accustomed to the wonderful virtual desktop support in their desktop environments but Windows users don’t get to enjoy this luxury. In my past efforts to Linux-ize Windows, I’ve tried using a few virtual desktop tools before… all of which get immediately uninstalled by the next day. If you’re familiar with Power Toys, there’s a virtual desktop tool that you can use, but it’s super buggy and just isn’t very slick. I’ve also tried the virtual desktop tool that came with my ATI graphics card software, and it screws your taskbar order, as well as the application ordering on the screen. Neither of these virtual desktop tools have the seamless integration found in GNOME or KDE. Read more »
