Griffin AirCurve Acoustic Amplifier for iPhone

/* Filed under Apple, Hardware, iPhone */

Griffin Technology has developed an interesting product for your first or second gen iPhone - the AirCurve. Without any electrical or moving parts, this “acoustic amplifier” does exactly that, amplifies through its curvy design the acoustics from your iPhone speaker at the base. By “snapping” in your iPhone onto the AirCurve, the sound from your iPhone speakers are output directly into the AirCurve and the volume is magnified as the sound waves travel through the translucent polycarbonate amplifier. Apple to Replace All Faulty iPhone 3G Power Adapters

/* Posted September 23rd, 2008 at 9:13am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Hardware, iPhone */

Apple announced the creation of the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange program to replace potentially dangerous power adapters that have been shipped with each 3G iPhone. The safety risk can occur when the power adapter’s metal prongs break off when being pull from a power outlet, remaining attached to the outlet and posing a threat for electrical shock and fire. Though no serious incidents have been reported yet, Apple has received enough reports of breaking prongs to warrant the exchange program. If you bought the iPhone 3G or standalone adapter in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, or South America, then you may be affected. Read more »

How to Jailbreak iPhone v2.1 Firmware with QuickPWN 2.1 (Windows)

/* Posted September 19th, 2008 at 1:19pm [Comments: 10] */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

The moment every Windows user has been waiting for: QuickPwn 2.1 GUI has just been released for iPhone users wishing to upgrade their phones to the latest v2.1 firmware without having to jump through hoops and hurdles. We posted earlier ways to upgrade to 2.1 on Windows but this didn’t work for some people with 1600, 6, and 1400 errors or else left the iPhone boot screen blank. Now, however, all these problems should be resolved, we hope. Read more »

HTC’s Google Android Smartphone Priced at $199

/* Posted September 18th, 2008 at 8:56am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Gadgets, Google, android, iPhone */

tmobile_dash

Though the first Google Android cell phone is going to be coming in a little bit late to the smartphone game, it’s pricing is certainly “aggressively priced” to match the current champ to beat - the $199 Apple iPhone 3G. Android is Google’s mobile platform and answer to the iPhone SDK which they have been promoting wildly with cash-fueled developer competitions to spread adoption and awareness. HTC of Taiwan, makers of the Excalibur smartphone, is the manufacturing company that will provide the Google Android-enabled phone for T-Mobile to market in the US. Look for further details to be released at an event in New York in about a week. T-Mobile has long been eyeing the success rival AT&T has been enjoying with the exclusive rights to the iPhone, so T-Mobile, Google, and HTC all have a lot of hope riding on the new smartphone. Let’s hope they don’t let us down.

How to Upgrade Pwned iPhone with 2.1 Custom Firmware IPSW (Windows)

/* Posted September 16th, 2008 at 12:27am [Comments: 36] */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, Mods, iPhone */

The Pwnage Tool 2.1 and QuickPwn tools were released over the past weekend, allowing Mac users to create custom firmware IPSWs and pwn their iPhones. Unfortunately, without WinPwn or QuickPwn for Windows, Windows users did not have an option to upgrade to v2.1 firmware unless they were on already on AT&T and did not require unlocking or activation (that is they only needed to jailbreak on 2.1). But for the other half who are not with AT&T, it just wasn’t a viable option. We’re here to tell you that actually there is. Since the Pwnage 2.1 tool was released, some very generous people have made available custom 2.1 IPSW firmwares for 2G and 3G iPhones. What does this mean for Windows users with already pwned 2G iPhones? It means you can freely upgrade to 2.1 firmware without worrying about your iPhone getting locked again. 3G iPhone owners, this procedure is more geared towards 2G iPhones so you might want to check out our 3G 2.1 upgrade guide first.

The Pwnage Tool performs two main jobs: 1) create a custom firmware ipsw to allow jailbroken apps, and 2) pwn your iPhone to allow use with any GSM provider. Since the first job’s been done by Mac users providing pre-made custom 2.1 firmware, and the second job’s been done for you before, you’re actually closer than you think to enjoying firmware v2.1 iPhone bliss… Read more »

iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.1 and QuickPwn 1.1 Direct Download Links

/* Posted September 13th, 2008 at 12:10pm [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Apple, iPhone */

Here are direct download links from HTTP servers for Pwnage 2.1 and QuickPwn 1.1 tools without having to go through BitTorrent. Use these to pwn your iPhone to 2.1 firmware.

QuickPwn 1.1

PwnageTool 2.1

If you opted to go the QuickPwn route (which we recommend), be sure to check out our 2.1 upgrade guide to jailbreak/unlock your iPhone. If you’d rather not download any of these tools at all and your iPhone has been pwned before, you can actually upgrade to 2.1 firmware with just iTunes 8.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 Firmware IPSW with QuickPwn 1.2.0 (Windows)

/* Posted September 13th, 2008 at 11:23am [Comments: 45] */
/* Filed under Apple, How-To, Mods, iPhone */

Yesterday the latest iPhone firmware v2.1 was released and it didn’t take long for the iPhone Dev Team to come up with the new Pwnage 2.1 Tool to jailbreak the 2.5G and 3G iPhones. Unfortunately for us Windows users, there isn’t a solution out unless you can get a hold of a custom 2.1 ipsw file from a Mac user. The steps we are about to present work on Windows but only for AT&T-activated iPhones only, and won’t work if you want to unlock, it just works to jailbreak.

Update: If you’ve previously pwned your iPhone (that is, you’ve used Pwnage, QuickPwn, WinPwn or any tool like that at some point in your life), you can actually upgrade to 2.1 firmware quite easily and without any tools except iTunes 8. Heck, it’s a lot easier than this guide so you may want to check it out.

Update 2: QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows is finally out so we recommend following the revised 2.1 upgrade guide instead. Trust us it’s a lot easier. Read more »

Air Sharing: Free Over-the-Air File Sharing App for iPhone/iPod Touch

/* Posted September 12th, 2008 at 7:08am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Apps, iPhone */

Air Sharing is a free file sharing iPhone & iPod Touch app available for only two weeks (until September 22) as part of an introductory offer (regular price is $6.99). I’ve used it briefly and its pretty impressive. If you own an iPhone, you know that you can’t really use it to store personal files, but this app enables you utilize the wifi to connect to your phone and upload files. Search for it at the Apple App Store. So far with 454 reviews, it has a super high rating of 4.5/5 stars. Read more »
