My dungeon crawling experience of yesterday are littered with trips down memory lane to the Amiga we have stored away, Tales of pirates and many hours spent on Golden Axe.

Nostalgia now well out-of-the-way, lets talk a look at Acquire Corp. They are an Indie game developer based in Japan who have traditionally released RPG games for the Playstation and iPhone that focus on classic style gameplay.

  • First-person RPG combat.

  • Take the role of one of ten unique characters.
  • Players build their party to undertake missions in one of two of the games large, monster-filled dungeon.
  • Free-to-download title (characters restricted to level 5)
  • Full purchase to unlock all features is $9.99

Wizardry hits the App Store on the 3rd November 2011.

Adventure

Over the next nine weeks, Wired.com is presenting a collection of galleries intended to help people become better geeks, nine items at a time. This is the second in the series.

Do you have gaps in your gaming career? Have any non-gamers in your life who want an education in the pleasures of electronic entertainment? There’s a whole wide world of games out there, and narrowing it down to a handful is an impossible task.

So when Game|Life’s contributors found ourselves tasked with picking nine essential games, we didn’t just want to tell you to go play everything. We wanted a more manageable task list. So here are nine goals you should attempt to attain at least once in nine landmark videogames.

Some won’t take very long. Some involve finishing the whole game. But all of them are experiences that any gamer geek should have at least once, just to know how it feels.

Task: Find gaming’s first Easter egg.

Atari, Atari 2600, 1979

In the early days of Atari, the company didn’t credit its designers, even when they produced exceptional one-man efforts like the sprawling Adventure. Rebelling against company policy, this game’s designer hid his name in a secret room. If you want to see a landmark moment in the history of videogames, you’ve got to seek it out. Apple updates Aperture, printer drivers

/* Posted October 27th, 2011 at 9:55pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Web    */

In the last couple of days Apple has released updates for EFI firmware to address Thunderbolt compatibility issues, as well as iPhoto to fix a crash with third-party video codecs. Today Apple continues its latest round of updates with updates for both Aperture and its support for the latest printers from HP and Epson.

As with iPhoto, the Aperture update is just a point release (Version 3.2.1) that resolves a few issues with the program, including the following:

  • Resolves an issue that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly at launch on Macs with Core Duo processors
  • Addresses problems that could cause the Crop tool to switch to the incorrect orientation or resize incorrectly
  • Resolves rendering issues when cropping images with Onscreen Proofing enabled
  • Location menus are now displayed correctly on the map in the Places view when “Photos” is selected in the Library Inspector

Printer update in Software Update

If you have a relevant printer device installed, Software Update will pick the specific driver you need to update. This results in a much smaller download instead of requiring you to download and apply all the drivers in the full update package.

(Credit:
Screenshot by Topher Kessler)

The update is a fairly substantial 635.76MB download from the Aperture update Web page, but may be sized differently if you download it through Apple’s Software Update utility. The update requires either OS X 10.6.8 or OS X 10.7.2, so be sure you update your system to the latest release of
Snow Leopard or Lion to run this update.

In addition to Aperture, Apple has issued updates for its HP and Epson printer drivers, which contain the software needed to run the latest printers from these two companies. Unless you have a printer from either HP or Epson that is not working properly or for which you cannot locate a driver, then you will not need to install these updates. Apple should provide relevant specific driver packages through Software Update, which is the preferred method of updating printer driver software instead of applying these full packages. The packages are hefty downloads at 515MB and 972MB because they contain hundreds of drivers, of which you will likely only be using a few at most.

The printer drivers require OS X 10.6 or later (including Lion), and can be downloaded from Apple’s Epson driver update Web site, or from the HP driver update Web site, but it is preferable to use Apple’s Software Update utility to install these updates.

SSX: Deadly Descents Coming to Vita?

/* Posted October 27th, 2011 at 3:55pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Video Games    */

SSX: Deadly Descents is heading to your PS3 and Xbox 360 in February of 2012. As far as we know, that’s the end of the SSX franchise for the time being, as EA hasn’t made any sort of official announcement regarding a possible follow-up. However, in an interview with CVG, EA Sports lead designer Tom Batty did have some interesting things to say about the future of the series.

mfssxdd2

Most notably, they’re considering bringing the franchise to the PlayStation Vita handheld system. The Vita, which hits shelves sometime next year, would mark the first appearance of SSX on a portable system. Basically, Batty said that they’re waiting to see how the console version of the game plays out before they make any big decisions, but if things go well for Deadly Descents, a Vita SSX title would be considered “for sure.”

EA Sports is already no stranger to Vita development, planning to bring FIFA 12 directly to the system soon after it launches. While it’s smart of the studio to wait and see how the latest SSX game performs, it also seems like the Vita would be a unique opportunity – there aren’t likely to be a large number of must-have titles at launch, so SSX could potentially experience a boost if it’s launched during a relative lull.

Would you want to see SSX on your Vita, or do you think it’s best left to consoles?

The world according to Opera Mini (scoop)

/* Posted October 27th, 2011 at 9:55am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Web    */

What you do with your mobile Web browser may depend heavily on which mobile operating system you’re on, if the results of a new study by Opera can be extrapolated to other browsers. In its State of the Mobile Web monthly report for September 2011, released first to CNET today, Opera revealed that Opera Mini users were more likely to use it for search on
Android, for travel and tourism on iOS, for sports and technology on BlackBerry, for news on Windows Phones, and for social networking on feature phones.

Opera and its subsidiary AdMarvel unveiled not only a bucketload of metrics on what kinds of sites Opera Mini users visited on different platforms, but that 131.3 million people used the Opera Mini in September, and that the browser had decent growth in multiple countries and devices.

The browsing interests of Opera Mini users indicates that once you get past the highest profile sites, trends based on OS platform have begun to develop.

(Credit:
Opera)

Opera Mini is uniquely suited for cross-platform analysis because it’s one of the few browsers that exists across all major platforms, and the only cross-platform browser with such a large number of users. By a point of comparison, the 131 million worldwide users of Opera Mini stands in stark contrast to the 55 million people worldwide who use the desktop version of Opera, and is about 28 percent of Mozilla
Firefox‘s unique user base of more than 450 million people.

As strong as these aggregate numbers are, they also don’t provide a glimpse into the Balkanization trend that affects the plethora of mobile systems far more than desktops. Opera did not reveal how many of its Mini users were on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, or feature phones, and those numbers could give a clearer picture of how
mobile browser use is developing. Some studies I’ve seen indicate that the mobile browser is the dominant app; while others cite data showing that apps blew past the browser sometime earlier this year. Also, it makes a huge difference, for example, if Opera Mini is used by tens of millions of feature phone users, but only a couple million people on smartphones.

Despite those concerns, 131 million Opera Mini users is an impressive benchmark to score.

The report showed that the “unclassified” category of sites dominated all platforms with 27 percent to 31.5 percent of browser use. After that, social networking dominated Opera Mini use. Feature phones used the browser for this more than any platform by a massive percentage margin, at 20.5 percent, while the others were in the 9 percent to 13 percent range. This is hardly surprising, given that feature phones don’t have social networking apps to redirect attention away from the browser.

Opera has seen enormous growth in the use of Opera Mini and its site-compression engine.

(Credit:
Opera)

It’s in the other categories that dominated Opera Mini use where the platform differentiation began to creep in. “News and information” followed social, with Android, iOS, Windows, and RIM users all within 1.7 percent of each other. News reading dropped off for feature phones, though, around 2 percent behind RIM and almost 4 percent behind Windows.

The percentage of people using in-browser search were about the same on all platforms, the next most popular interest, but showed variation in the category after it. 5.3 percent of people on Android used Opera Mini to browse to education sites, while the users of other platforms hovered around 4 percent. Meanwhile, RIM dominated with sports and tech sites.

Browser growth
September was Opera Mini’s strongest month yet, according to Opera. Not only was it used by upwards of 130 million people, more than 79 billion pages were served and 11.6 petabytes of data were compressed for Mini users. Opera Mini functions by redirect all Web traffic through its compression algorithms to speed up page-load times over slow connections and older hardware. Opera did clarify that these numbers do not include operator-installed versions of Opera Mini; only individual users are reflected here.

The 131.1 million users was an increase of 2.6 percent from the previous month, and an 84.2 percent increase in unique users since September 2010. And although page views actually dropped 0.5 percent from August 2011, they have increased 114.1 percent since a year ago.

The 11.6 petabytes of data transferred represents not the actual amount of data sent back and forth, but the total amount of data transferred and then uncompressed at a 90 percent rate. Since one of Opera Mini’s big draws is that it shrinks the amount of bits being transferred, looking at the raw numbers can be misleading. The September 2011 amount of actual data transferred was 1.251 trillion megabytes, a 133.7 percent increase from the same month in 2010.

Monthly Opera Mini users more than in Russia in the last half year, rising from just over 300,000 in April to 700,000 in September. Opera believes itll be able to convert Opera Mini users on lower-end phones to Opera Mobile and Mini users on Android, particularly in countries such as Russia where the company has a strong brand.

Opera also released a closer look at some of its Mini data from Europe. Basically, the continent is a strong indicator of Opera use because of its diversity of handsets. Of the top 10 phones in the top 10 Opera Mini countries in Europe, 71 were Nokia, 10 were Samsung, six were Sony Ericsson, six were BlackBerry, six were Alcatel, and one was LG.

So, page views in the top 10 European countries using Opera Mini increased by 129 percent, unique users by 54 percent, and data transferred went up by 125 percent.

The data published on top sites was far less revealing, except to indicate that people use Opera Mini to visit the same sites that you’d expect to see at the top of any desktop browser list. The most popular sites on Mini with Europeans were Google, Facebook, YouTube, and Wikipedia.

The massive growth of Opera Mini over the past year tells us several things about the state of mobile browsing. First, that although the highest-end handsets drive news, there is a huge public interest in a single browser that will work on all devices, from older feature phones to the latest from Apple. A big part of that is the ability to render the Web quickly, which Opera Mini can do in spades. We’ve also seen the idea reinforced that people use their mobile browser to check out the same kinds of high-profile sites that they do on their desktops, even as the users of different platforms begin to gravitate towards different specialized-interest sites. And finally, we can see that social networking is so big, that even on phones that have apps to support social networking sites, browser visits to social sites are a significant chunk of traffic.

LCFW 6.XX PRO B10 Released

/* Posted October 27th, 2011 at 9:55am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under PSP    */

Believe it or not, the next revision of PRO is not entitled PRO C but PRO and provides the usual bug fixes over the last revision. Once again a B revision outruns PRO C which is in development since B4. Here is the changelog I found on the internet (it’s translated from Chinese so it’s far from perfect):

  • [!]fix bugs: ISOCache infinite loop?unsupport2GB ISO?and Need for Speed: Carbon Own The City track disappear
  • [!]ISOCache default 256
  • [!]fix PSPGo ISO VIDEO MOUNT problem in start game
  • [!]fix Recovery menu low probability halt?Recovery menu cpu speed not display 333/166
  • [!]fix problem in ISO file name (thx to popsdeco)

  • [+]hold R to disable VSH plugins when start XMB
  • [+]Recovery menu add Delete Hibernation and highlight effect
  • [+]support 2GB~4GB ISO/CSO

Here are some the most frequently asked questions about PRO LCFW:

  • What is LCFW ? LCFW a.k.a Light Custom Firmware is a custom firmware that is stored in the RAM as well as in the Flash0  and when the PSP is completely turned off it gets erased(only from the RAM). It’s the only CFW available for PSP 3000/GO/E1000 and PSP 2000 with TA088v3. It enables you to play PS1 games, PSP iso/cso games and to run homebrews and plugins.
  • Is there a way to make this LCFW permanent? If your PSP supports 6.20 OFW there is so called Permanent Patch that can make the 6.20 Pro B10 permanent and it’s supported by any PSP that supports 6.20 OFW. If you have PSP 1000 or PSP 2000 with non-TA088v3 motherboard you can also install 6.39 Pro B10 or 6.60 Pro B10 and install CIPL. This will make the LCFW full CFW.
  • What is Fast Recovery? After the initial installation of the LCFW there is easier way to turn it on. It’s to run the Fast Recovery.
  • Can I delete the files after the installation? If you have installed 6.20 Pro B10 with a permanent patch  or CIPL you can delete everything. If not than you can delete everything except the Fast Recovery.
  • What PSPs are supported?
  1. 6.20 Pro B10 – 1g,2g,3g,4g,5g,6g,downgraded to 6.20 9g
  2. 6.35 Pro B10 – 1g,2g,3g,4g,5g,6g,7g,9g
  3. 6.39 Pro B10 – 1g,2g,3g,4g,5g,6g,7g,9g
  4. 6.60 Pro B10 - 1g,2g,3g,4g,5g,6g,7g,9g,11g a.k.a PSP E1000( not yet tested )
  • I installed 6.20 Permanent Patch and got a file called vshorig.prx. What to do it? This is file that will help you if something with your PSP went wrong. Copy it somewhere save – on your computer for example.

So How to install 6.XX Pro B10:

  • Install the some of these OFW : 6.20,6.35,6.39,6.60 ( No matter if you downgrade or upgrade or you are on one of them already )
  • Download the version of the LCFW that corresponds to your OFW
  • Unrar both FastRecovery and PROUPDATE folders in PSP/GAME
  • Run the 6.XX PRO UPDATE Icon from Game – Memory Stick
  • You will see black screen like the one below. Hit the X button. When the installation completes hit the X button again.

  • You are now back to the menu with 6.XX Pro B10 installed.

How to install 6.20 Permanent Patch( This works only on 6.20 Pro B10 already installed and enabled) :

  • In the 6.20 Pro B10 archive you will find folder called “620PRO_Permanent”. Copy it in PSP/GAME
  • Run it from Game – Memory Stick on your PSP.( See below )

  • You will see a black screen. Press X on it. Then you will be asked if you want to test the patch. Press X again. ( See below )

  • If your PSP doesn’t crash and goes to the XMB you can proceed with the installation. Otherwise your PSP is not compatible with it and should stop trying to install it.
  • Run the permanent patch again. Hit X again on the first question but this time hit O on the second.
  • Your 6.20 Pro B10 is now permanent. You Will find out that you got a file vshorig.prx in your root directory of the PSP. Copy it somewhere save – for example on your computer. It can help in some cases of brick.

Installing 6.39/6.60 CIPL( This must be installed on 6.39/6.60 Pro B10 and only on PSP 1000 and PSP 2000 with non -TA088v3 motherboard. Otherwise this will cause a brick that can not be fixed.) :

  • You will find a  CIPL_Flasher folder in the 6.39/6.60 Pro B10 archives. Place it in PSP/GAME
  • Run it from Game – Memory Stick ( See Below ).

  •  You will see a black screen as the one below. Hit X and wait the psp to reboot.

  • You now have a permanent 6.39/6.60 PRO B10.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 4 Using RedSn0w (Mac) [5.0]

/* Posted October 27th, 2011 at 3:54am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under iPhone    */

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

BOOT TETHERED
Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.

Step One
From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.

Step Two
Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.
