PoV: Publishers need to stop making new sports games every year

/* Posted August 10th, 2011 at 3:24am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Video Games    */

Unless they provide significant improvements over the last one.

nba_2k12

Take for example EA’s Madden NFL series. Every year, it feels like the same game. The only major difference is the new rosters with very little changes, all rolled up and repacked for a new season.

There’s also 2K Sports’ NBA 2K series. Last year’s iteration was so damn good that 2K could just easily release a DLC for a roster update. But as the tradition implies, another iteration of the franchise is slated to hit this October. The only problem this year is the upcoming 2011-2012 NBA season is curently stuck in an ongoing labor dispute between owners and players. A problem which could affect the sales of NBA 2K12 and could cost 2K Sports millions if not resolved.

“We are conservatively modeling 4.5M units for the title in FY12 (NBA 2K11 has sold-in more than 5.5M units to date),” according to the forecast made by Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. “The company’s viewpoint, however, is that the uniqueness of its upcoming NBA title could conceivably protect it from historically negative trends during a lockout,” he noted.

While NBA 2K12 may offer something unique, I think last year’s iteration still has lot to offer. 2K Sports could just sell a roster / uniform / commentary update and it’s still a good game.

Is The Way We Rank Websites About To Change?

/* Posted August 9th, 2011 at 9:24pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under SEO    */

Currently, search engines rank their web pages based on a number of things, including; the number of visitors, the amount of keywords, how long the domain has been in operation for, how many back links the website has, its page rank and a few others. However, it looks like this is about to change. Here, we will explore if this is the case.

Google filed a patent (on the 24th Feb 2011), which detailed how this new system would work, and also that their current system had a few issues. They are worried that at this point there is too much focus on keyword manipulation.

The patent documents that the focus should be switched to usage data and frequency of visits, but it does say that other features will continue to be used. This patent was launched on the same day as Google Panda, which suggests that these two have been launched to stop websites bending the current rules.

What the Patent Says

The patent has been documented very clearly, and here is what it says:

  • The search engine forms a list based on link scores and IR
  • These pages are listed based on usage statistics (in whole or part)
  • Usage stats are returned on a live basis, meaning that ranking would change from second to second
  • Formed based on the number of unique visitors
  • Combine this ranking with PageRank and keywords and other bits in order to form a ‘fair rank’.

Of course, this patent means nothing currently, because it was filed with wording that allows Google to make anything from a complete overhaul to no changes at all. The frequency of visits, number of users and additional user data can all be gathered in different ways, which means that Google can essentially keep the same system or alter it to any way that they believe will be the most successful.

Visit Data

This could be:

The highest number of times a page has been visited (including repeat visits)

The number of times the page has been visited in a specific timeframe

The difference in the amount of times a page has been visited from month to month

The amount of unique visitors to the page

This information would be gathered on the IP address of the person and their host. Alternatively, a combination of cookie information and other machine based facts to associate the visitor with the website. However, the issue here lies with the amount of bots or repeat visitors to a site.

This means that the search engines (based on the patent) would have to choose from a combination of these three approaches (term based, link based and usage based). This would then be combined with the IR and link scores in order to give an accurate ranking.

Summary

There is no doubt that the way we will rank in the future will change. Unfortunately, now there are too many ways to bend the system which leaves those not in the know well behind. Hopefully, with this new system, more people will understand how to successfully boost their rankings.

Monitor your Windows, Linux computer from a smartphone

/* Posted August 9th, 2011 at 3:24pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Web    */

Maybe you just need to see how a download is progressing, or maybe you need to kill a process that’s eating your network alive. If you’re on-site, it’s easy, but if you’re working remotely, you need a solution. PC Monitor lets you check in with and exert control over your Windows or Linux machine from almost any smartphone. Here’s how to get started with it:

  1. Download and install PC Monitor on your computer and on your smartphone.
  2. Run PC Monitor on your computer. (You will need to set up an account the first time you run it. This is pretty straightforward.)
    Step 2: Set up account.

  3. Check and change any settings or notifications that are of interest. There are a lot of settings, but you needn’t concern yourself about all of them at first.
    Step 3: PC Monitor settings.

  4. Run PC Monitor on your mobile device, enter your username and password, then click the “Devices” tab on your PC to set higher security. By selecting “Allow only authorized devices…” you can limit the devices that have access to your PC.
    Step 4: Authorize device.

  5. Click “Start Service” on your PC to begin monitoring.
    You should now be able to check your PC status on your mobile device. There’s a lot you can do remotely, so explore and figure out what works best for you.
    Step 5: Monitor PC remotely.

Remember that anything that grants you this kind of access could potentially grant anyone else access. This software is secure, but it’s only as secure as your password, so change it frequently. PC Monitor is free for up to three computers; after that, you need to purchase a subscription.

GameFly Goes Digital With PC Game ‘Rental’ Service

/* Posted August 9th, 2011 at 3:24pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Video Games    */

GameFly will launch a new program through which subscribers can rent PC titles to be delivered digitally instead of through postal mail.

arstechnica
GameFly is best known for its game rental service where customers can have differing numbers of games out at a time — much like the original Netflix. The new digital storefront allows subscribers to play PC games at no additional charge; access to the games is cut off when you end your subscription. The announcement comes three months after GameFly purchased Direct2Drive from IGN.

“It’s kind of like a Spotify or Rhapsody or a Napster,” GameFly co-founder Sean Spector told USA Today. “You have access to the content as long as you are a subscriber but when you are no longer a member, the content then disappears.”

A closed beta of the downloadable client will launch early next month, while the full version is expected to be available in time for the holidays. Around 100 games are expected to be available for download initially, and the service will be PC-only to start (Mac games will be available at a later date). Based on the teaser trailer, it looks like the service may already have support from major publishers like Ubisoft.

Of course, GameFly isn’t the first to offer a digital subscription-based rental service, as GameTap already provides a similar experience. The main difference is that the GameFly service is tied to the disc-rental business — as of now GameFly has no plans to offer a digital-only subscription option, according to Joystiq.

You can sign up for the closed beta, which begins Sept. 8, here.

How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch 4G Using RedSn0w (Windows) [4.3.5]

/* Posted August 9th, 2011 at 9:24am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under iPhone    */

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod touch 4G on the 4.3.5 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here. If you are on 4.3.3 or lower make sure you do NOT update to iOS 4.3.5. Use the untethered JailbreakMe instead. You can find the appropriate JailbreakMe tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.3.5 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.3.4 (4G): iPod4,1_4.3.4_8K2_Restore.ipsw
4.3.5 (4G): iPod4,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file into the same folder.

Step Two
Connect your iPod touch to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPod touch from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPod touch.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.3.5 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod touch to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

**Windows 7 users may need to run RedSn0w in Vista Compatibility mode. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 4.3.5 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.

Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button to continue.

Step Nine
Please plug your iPod touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Eleven
Your iPod touch will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPod touch finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

BOOT TETHERED
Once RedSn0w has finished jailbreaking your device you will need to boot it tethered. Rerun RedSn0w and this time select Just boot tethered right now from the list of options instead of installing Cydia.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.
**Windows 7 users can try running RedSn0w as an administrator in Windows Vista or XP compatibility mode if you experience any difficulties.

Google+ arrives on the iPad, iPod Touch

/* Posted August 9th, 2011 at 3:24am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Web    */

Google+

Following last month’s introduction of a native Google+ app to
iPhone users, Google’s updated that app to work on Apple’s iPad
tablet and
iPod Touch devices as well.

In an update this morning, the same app (iTunes) now works with those models, though in the iPad’s case it’s just as a double resolution version versus a native, big screen application. Previously iPad and iPod Touch users couldn’t even install the application from the App Store.

Along with the compatibility fix, Google’s added a settings tweak for Huddle, its group chat offering, to let users pick who can message them, based on what circle they belong to. Google’s also pulled together the notifications you get from being added to circles to keep them consolidated.

Google’s app continues not to work on the developer beta version of Apple’s iOS 5, which is expected to be released in the next month or two. With this build, Google’s added a convenient pop-up message for users on the test version of that platform that alerts them to this fact.

Google+, which remains invite only, hit the 25 million member mark less than a week ago. The service launched at the very end of June as an alternative to social-networking giants like Facebook, combining a number of Google’s properties and technologies under one umbrella.
