Plan your Fourth of July barbecue on iOS

Independence Day is coming on July 4th, and that means people will be getting together to light fireworks or watch fireworks shows, and–perhaps most importantly–cook great food.

Though this might seem early with the 4th of July more than a week away, we wanted to make sure everybody had time to figure out their menus and get their supplies ready before the mad rush to the grocery stores. With these apps, you can start planning for the perfect Independence Day feast.

This week’s app collection is all about cooking apps for iOS. The first lets you browse recipes from famous chefs on the Food Network; the second gives you a giant database of recipes and cooking guidance for any time of year; and the third is perfect for planning and cooking outdoors on the barbecue.

In The Kitchen

Get a quick overview for each recipe to see if it’s what you want.

In The Kitchen ($1.99) gives you a database of delicious recipes from all your favorite Food Network chefs. The interface offers a number of ways to find a good recipe, either by using a search tool or by touching the image of a chef from the Food Network.

Browse through thousands of recipes from popular chefs including Bobby Flay, Alton Brown, Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, and Rachael Ray, and get reviews for recipes from other users. Once you decide on a dish, you can have In The Kitchen create a shopping list for you so you can check off ingredients as you walk around the store. The shopping list is particularly helpful because you can add just the items you need or all the items from multiple dishes. Even if you don’t want to make a particular recipe today, you can store favorites in a recipe box so you can get back to them later.

Along with tons of recipes from your favorite Food Network chefs, handy tools for shopping, and a recipe box for your favorites, In The Kitchen offers timers so you don’t even need to set a separate one. With all these features and the addition of special seasonal recipe collections, anyone who wants to add to his or her cooking repertoire should definitely download this app.

How To Cook Everything

The home screen is the perfect launching point for finding the best grilling recipes.

How to Cook Everything ($4.99) is a cooking and recipe app based on New York Times columnist Mark Bittman’s best-selling cookbook, and it offers several easy-to-use tools that will be extremely helpful for your holiday feast.

The interface is very intuitive, with an opening screen that acts as a launching point for whatever you might want to cook. You can browse recipes; learn how to perform specific kitchen duties with kitchen basics; or search for recipes by entering a keyword in the search field. You have additional options when you’re not sure what you want to cook with buttons for Bittman’s picks, most popular recipes, featured recipes, or a selection of easy-to-make quick dinners. There also are buttons across the bottom of the screen for your saved favorites, your shopping list, and more.

How to Cook Everything comes with more than 2,000 recipes, all with Mark Bittman’s guidance and helpful illustrations and techniques. Especially handy are the built-in timers included within recipes that help you easily track each step of the process. You also have the option to show each step of the recipe onscreen, and with a swipe, you can move on to the next step so it’s not as confusing.

Other extras include the ability to quickly print recipes and shopping lists wirelessly over AirPrint; the ability to share what you’re cooking over Twitter and Facebook; and the ability to send up to 10 recipes a month to your friends via e-mail. Best of all, the recipes are embedded within the app so you can use it even without a reliable connection to the Internet.

Overall, How to Cook Everything is an excellent cooking guide and reference whether you’re in the kitchen or standing out by the barbecue. With tons of recipes, illustrations, built-in timers, and other handy tools, this is the app to have to make your kitchen time a success.

Webers On The Grill

There are plenty of great grilling recipes with pictures to browse through.

Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)

Weber’s On the Grill ($4.99) takes more than 300 recipes from the company’s popular grilling books and adds some handy tools to make this app an almost perfect grilling companion on your
iPhone. Start by picking the type of meat you plan to grill by opening up a large list of recipes with mouth-watering pictures to pique your interest.

From there, you can add the ingredients to an included grocery list that lets check off each ingredient while you shop. When the coals are hot, use your knowledge gained from more than 100 grilling tips and set the included timer so you know your meat will come out perfect. Weber’s On the Grill also comes with a grilling guide for each type of meat so you know approximately how long to cook your steak and when to take that chicken off the grill.

Weber’s On the Grill offers an intuitive interface for finding recipes, big clear pictures of recipes you want to create, and plenty of tips for grilling each type of food. The grocery list feature is a great way to make sure you have all the right ingredients at the store, and you can send the list to someone else (whoever might be doing the shopping) via e-mail. One issue we found is, as you grill, it seems like you should be able to launch the timer straight out of a recipe you’re using rather than having to switch back and forth. In spite of this minor problem, Weber’s On the Grill is definitely a worthy grilling companion for Independence Day BBQing, and I imagine there will be updates to smooth out any rough edges in the future.

Have a better cooking app we should know about? Let us all know in the comments.

A fan of Bollywood Hindi movies and films? If you’re not a resident in India, and are not keen to buy DVD and Blu-ray disc or subscribe to live or on-demand streaming TV service, it’s pretty hard to find ways to watch Bollywood movies for free. Of course, unless you are downloading from pirated sources.

Thanks to YouTube, everybody with Internet connection now have chance to watch full length Hindi movies online. A YouTube channel named YouTube BoxOffice is offering free viewing of Bollywood movies, in partnership with Intel.

YouTube BoxOffice Channel

The featured film can be watched at high quality resolution of up to 720p HD, though most other movies offered for free only available at resolution of up to 480p, with playback at 360p by default. As the free movies are made possible with the sponsorship of Intel, expects to see Intel advertisements every now and then, at interval of around 10 minutes. But even with ads, Hindi film lovers will probably still enjoying the free online on-demand video (VOD) streaming of Bollywood movies.

The current featured movie of YouTube BoxOffice is “Ainvayi Ainvayi – Band Baaja Baaraat”, a romance comedy starring Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. However, the movie is offered only to India residents when visiting the YouTube page with an IP address originated from India. If you are in India, or can have an Indian IP through VPN or proxy, you can watch the Band Baaja Baaraat directly from here, now.

However, there are several movies listed under the “More Movies” tab of the channel that can be viewed from any counter in the world. The free movies available include:

  • Dil Toh Bachha Hai Ji
  • Saathiya

Unfortunately, the YouTube BoxOffice channel does not offer any free Hollywood blockbuster movies that broke box office records, even tough when talking about Box Office, more people will relate it to Hollywood movies that took in hundreds of millions dollars rather than Bollywood movies.

Valve’s Team Fortress 2 Goes ‘Free to Play’

/* Posted June 25th, 2011 at 8:56am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Uncategorized    */

Team Fortress 2 is following in the footsteps of agricultural Facebook games, time-sink iPhone apps, failed MMOs and Korean kart racers. Valve’s comedic class-based shooter has gone free-to-play on PC and Mac.

Steam users can now download and play the entire Team Fortress 2 experience — including all nine character classes, all official and mod-made maps and the game’s bumper stock of updates — for nothing.

Valve, the game’s developer and maker of Half Life and Portal, will only earn money from the shooter’s wildly popular virtual haberdashery of in-game hats and digital arsenal of upgraded guns. The vast majority of that content can also be earned for free through playing the game.

Valve’s Team Fortress lead Robin Walker assured Develop Online that nonpaying gamers will not be subjected to advertising, there will be no premium subscription models and having a massive wallet won’t automatically let you buy the best weapons and trounce the competition.

He also explained that item freebies, which are currently doled out regularly, will still be made available to nonpaying gamers, and at the same frequency.

Valve introduced microtransactions (aka, the ability to spend a few bob on in-game items) in October 2010 with the Mann-conomy update.

Instead of slogging through endless battles to earn or randomly find new weapons, players can buy them from the shop with real-world currency. You can also buy endless numbers of hats like deer antlers, a luchador mask or a plunger for your noggin.

Valve doesn’t release sales data, but given the fact that it’s resting the entirety of Team Fortress 2’s profits on digital headwear, we can assume they’ve sold quite well so far.

Team Fortress 2 has also been updated with a more newbie-friendly training mode and match-finder, as well as another Payload map, the “Uber Update” (new weapons for the Medic) and the gruesome CGI short Meet the Medic, which you can watch above.

Is The Google Panda Update Fair?

/* Posted June 24th, 2011 at 8:56pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Uncategorized    */

In 2011 Google rolled out one of the biggest updates to its search engine, the Google Panda update, also referred to as the Farmer Update. The first tranche of the update was in February 2011 and affected all English language sites in America. The second tranche of the update was in April 2011 and affected all other English language sites.

There is a lot of conflicting opinion on whether this update was good or not. Many webmasters and blog owners feel that it was unfair as they lost a lot of traffic. Google say that users have reported improvements in search results, although a majority of Google users are totally unaware that any change took place.

The Google Panda update provides a new layer to the Google search algorithm. Prior to Panda, Google ranked web pages using its PageRank algorithm. It still does this, however, now there is a second layer to ranking. Panda ranks provides a quality check for an entire website. So a website with some very good pages which are well linked to may have received a lot of targeted traffic prior to Google Panda. However, if there is some low quality content on the site then these pages are reduced in ranking. Basically, Google now ranks websites and not just web pages.

The result is that many bloggers and website owners have seen large drops in Google traffic since the Panda updates. These site owners are often very critical of Google because of this. However, really they need to take a closer look at their business model and their websites and ask themselves, why doesn’t Google like my site anymore?

As far as Google users are concerned there are still 10 organic search results on the first page of Google when they type a search in. There is still a lot of content on the Internet to provide readers with all the answers they need.

For those that are highly critical of the Google Panda update they really need to to examine their website in great detail to improve overall site quality. This does not just mean quality of written content but also the quality of the site design, architecture, navigation and usability.

It is also painful to hear, but if a website has lost much of its business as a result of a single change by a single search engine, then their business model was broken. No business should ever rely solely on a single source of new clients. It is vital for any business to spread its risk by widening its marketing net. Google even suggests doing this themselves. Matt Cutts has said that webmasters really should look to social media and other sites for generating more business leads (traffic).

Facebook, Twitter, forums and blogs all provide opportunities for generating new business. Some of the most successful web marketeers were only receiving 25% of their traffic from Google before Panda, and these guys have well optimised websites.

The Internet is much bigger than just Google and to rely on Google for all your business is a marketing disaster waiting to happen. If you survived Google Panda in tact do not rest on your laurels. The next Google update could see your website plummet in the search index. Running a profitable website is really no different from running any other business. Make sure that you are ready to survive the crash by diversifying your marketing model.

For an example of a website that improved after the Google Panda update take a look at Shareholders Portal. The site is relatively new and does not have many links from other sites, i.e. it is the type of site which before Panda was lost in the search pages. However, since the Google update traffic has more than doubled. This is a sure sign that quality sites are being given more exposure in Google search.

Enable Single Tap Clicking on Windows Boot Camp

/* Posted June 24th, 2011 at 2:56pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under General    */

If you’ve been used to using a Windows-based laptop machine and are used to the single tap clicking functionality of your trackpad, then you will find this feature sorely missing on a Boot Camp Windows install. This is just one of those quirks of having to use a Mac interface to operate a Windows operating system. Another one of those quirks that is immediately evident is the lack of a right mouse button on the trackpad.

Fortunately, Apple was gracious enough to enable this functionality in the latest version of Boot Camp. As of 3.1, the version I am using, this is now a supported feature that you can easily enable, even if you use a more outdated machine like my white Macbook on a C2D Intel processor.

This feature was so widely requested that I believe Apple also enabled such behavior on Snow Leopard if I am not mistaken (you should be able to access that from the mouse settings). Looks like Windows triumphs against Apple on this small usability feature.

To enable single tap clicking on your Boot Camp Windows installation, check your taskbar for the Boot Camp icon. It’s a plain gray diamond.

taskbar boot camp icon

When you click on it, a pop up will appear. Select the “Boot Camp Control Panel…” option. In the dialog that opens, click on the “Trackpad” tab to get to the single tap settings page.

enable single tap click boot camp

The red square indicates the checkbox you should check labeled “Tap to Click.” Then simply hit the “Apply” button to begin enjoying single tap functionality immediately. Now your Macbook’s trackpad should work just like a trackpad off a Windows laptop.

The only thing to beware: accidental clicking. Enabling “Ignore accidental input when typing” should alleviate some of those issues, though not completely.

Nitro PDF Reader jumps to 2.0

/* Posted June 24th, 2011 at 2:56am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Web    */

Nitro PDF, Inc.)

Nitro PDF Reader, recipient of a 2010 CNET Editor’s Choice award, has officially jumped to version 2.0. After spending 12 months in beta, Nitro PDF Reader 2.0 comes to us with a host of big-time features, several bug fixes, and other minor enhancements. Some of the most important additions to 2.0 include:

Web browser integration
Now you can preview PDF files from within
Firefox, Chrome, and IE.

Nitro PDF Creator 2
As if the original built-in PDF creator wasn’t enough, now you can pump out PDFs at 4 times the speed and with a 50% reduction in file size

With this nifty new feature, you can say goodbye to the annoyingly tedious Print-Sign-Scan-Send workflow. QuickSign lets you import a scanned image of your signature and paste it onto “Sign Here” fields.

XFA Form Support
Again, another feature that lets us do away with printing physical copies. With XFA Form Support you can fill out paperwork digitally.

If you’re on Windows, and you’re still using Adobe Reader, you should strongly consider at least trying Nitro’s offering. It’s free, it has a built-in PDF creator, and now it comes with a host of features that many of its competitors can’t match. Nitro PDF Reader 2.0 is available now on, and you can get the full rundown of new features here.

Free Nitro PDF Reader Speeds Up, Works in Browsers

/* Posted June 24th, 2011 at 2:56am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under News    */

It’s leaner, it’s meaner, it’s Nitro PDF Reader. Available in 32-bit and 64-bit editions, new version 2 of the PDF viewer/creator/editor whose interface mimics Microsoft Office’s to a great extent (2007 and now 2010–a good thing in my book), is now noticeably faster both opening and saving PDFs. This is no mean feat, as it was very fast before. Its new browser integration is nice as well.

Free Nitro PDF Reader Speeds Up, Works in BrowsersNitro PDF 2.0 mimics Office 2010, but thankfully not down to covering entire windows with the menu.Nitro PDF Reader was never just a reader. It installs a driver that turns any kind of document into a PDF by simply printing it, and it’s one of a handful of free tools that allows you to add your own text to any kind of PDF. This ability means you can fill in PDF forms whether they have editable fields or not. It also has the ability to extract both text and graphics as well as embed a graphic of your signature. The latter task is now called QuickSign, but it appears procedurally identical to the old process: Load a picture of your signature, drag it and place it on the document, then double-click it to embed it. The program also installs it.

Probably the best new trick is integration with Web browsers. Nitro PDF Reader will open files in both IE and FireFox so you don’t have to open a separate viewer. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any way to change the magnification but it’s still handy. Nitro PDF claims that the files it saves are now smaller; however, opening then resaving a couple of book files resulted in the same size file from both versions 1.4 and 2.0. This was hardly a thorough test, though, and your mileage may vary.

I hate to complain about a free tool in any fashion. However, I have a wish for the list–that the program would save files in ebook format. Adobe Reader on Windows Phone 7 isn’t all that configurable, so I like to turn some PDF books into .epub format.

Despite my nitpicking, Nitro PDF Reader is easily the fastest PDF viewer and the best free editor around. It’s a must-download for anyone who deals with PDFs. For me, it has replaced the Foxit 2.3/BioPDF reading/creating combo I used for several years.
