Download ClearLock To Lock Computer With Transparent Lock Screen

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 7:34pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Gadgets    */

Many users who want to leave their workstation or computer for a short while for some reasons might tend to lock-up their machine running in Windows OS by pressing the Windows logo Key + L (Windows+L). Although it is fast, convenient and totally locks up the computer from being used or disturbed by others, some users might still not be so satisfied and might not think it is an ideal solution because this Windows function will lock up the Windows and go straight to the main log on screen. This might not be useful especially for users who still want to keep an eye on some particular screen on the desktop screen. For instance, users do not want their jobs to be disturbed and hence lock the computer. But they might require somebody to monitor the progress or action going on. ClearLock, a lightweight utility, probably will offer a better solution if users are caught in this dilemma.

Compatible with Windows OS only, ClearLock allows users to lock their computer and prohibit access to it without a valid password. However, this little application can still allow users or others to look at or monitor what is going on in the screen. This tiny application will lock up the machine by adding a transparent layer so that users can continue to see the activities on the screen but disable any input or activities to the machine unless a proper password is entered.

ClearLock is available in standalone executable version. Users just need to run it and set their password. Instead of Windows+L, users just need to click on the ClearLock icon to lock their computer as and when needed. Users can delete the .ini file created in the program folder in the event they want to reset the password. ClearLock can be downloaded via the link here. This application is meant to create a simple layer of protection to prevent unauthorized person from disturbing or accidentally changing users’ work when they are not around. However, this application is not meant to be used as a Windows security system.

How to Jailbreak Your iPod Touch 2G Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.2.1]

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 7:34pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under iPhone    */

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod touch 2G on the 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. At this time RedSn0w .9.6b4 cannot jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on the MC model of the iPod touch 2G. Only users with non-MC models should continue with this tutorial.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.2.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.2.1 (2G): iPod2,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

Extract the redsn0w app from the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two
Connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPod from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPod.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Six
You will be asked if your serial number begins with MC. If it does NOT then click No. If it does then click Yes. Please note that if your serial number does begin with MC then you can not jailbreak with this version of RedSn0w.

Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320×480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Notice that RedSn0w has options to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPod touch 2G run very slow.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Nine
Please plug your iPod into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Eleven
Your iPod will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPod finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

HotelTonight brings last-minute deals to iPhone

HotelTonight

For many seasoned travelers, making a trip as stress-free as possible means having booked a place to stay well in advance, especially for busy metropolitan destinations. However, the world in which we live is not always ideal, and last-minute plans are bound to be necessary from time to time. HotelTonight, a new travel-friendly app for the
iPhone, aims to make that requirement as easy–and affordable–to deal with as possible.

As far as travel apps are concerned, HotelTonight is limited in scope, though that fact does not impede its usefulness. The app is designed specifically to help users find and book last-minute, same-day hotel stays in major metro areas (currently: San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, D.C., Boston, and Chicago). Each city offers up three types of hotels for each night: hip, basic, and elegant. HotelTonight works with various hotels to provide rates below market value, and the deals can be booked up until 2 a.m. on the night of the stay.

Adding to HotelTonight’s appeal is its overall interface. The app flows easily from a city page to the hotel deal to more information about rooms. You can book from your phone, and a confirmation is saved directly within the app. As an added bonus, HotelTonight is currently offering a $25 credit toward first bookings for those who download the app. Users can also collect $25 credits for each friend they refer. And Android users, don’t be too sad: an app for you is in the works.

Infinity Blade for IOS

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 1:34pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under News    */

[Editor's Note: This story is reprinted from GamePro. For more iPhone game coverage, visit Gamepro's iPhone section.

When the mysterious "Project Sword" was first announced a few months back, both the public and the gaming press were blown away. Epic Games' proprietary Unreal Engine has become a staple of HD-gen console gaming, and seeing the engine in action on the iPhone and iPad is undeniably impressive. Now that that game (which we now know as Infinity Blade) has arrived on the App Store, it's time to see what sort of mobile gaming is actually possible with Epic's astonishing technology.

Infinity Blade opens with an armored knight entering the lair of an evil being known as the "God King." Our hero informs the God King that he has come to deliver some medieval justice, and is promptly impaled on a glowing sword. The game flashes-forward 20 years to the son of the fallen knight as he stands on a cliff overlooking the scene of his father's murder. As the son, your goal is to fight through the God King's castle to avenge your father's death.

The game itself is a sort of on-rails adventure in which you fight numerous one-on-one battles with evil swordsmen and massive ogres as you tour the God King's castle. Battles play out not unlike the fights in Nintendo's classic Punch-Out! series: you have access to a block button and two dodge buttons, and you'll have to successfully learn and maneuver enemy attack pattern before returning their blows with an on-screen swipe. You'll earn experience points and money by winning fights, and you can visit a store at any point to upgrade your equipment or allocate skill points to customize your character.

I suspect that a lot of people might be disappointed to learn that the game is on-rails, but its linear nature never hinders the core experience. Players have the ability to look around the environment and collect hidden items with a tap -- an idea that helps alleviate the lack of free movement, but still allows players to explore. The other benefit of keeping the game on-rails is that the entire experience has been cinematically designed, and there's no virtual D-pad to obscure the screen. It's a decision that developers ChAIR Entertainment (a subsidiary of Epic Games) made to make the game a better fit for touch-screen devices, and I think it was the right one.

So does Infinity Blade look like a console game? On the iPhone and iPod Touch -- especially the newer models with the Retina Display -- the answer is easily "hell yes." The game is downright gorgeous, and those who have said that it looks on par with some Xbox 360 games aren't far out of line. The iPad version is a slightly different story, though -- my suspicion is that the two devices utilize the same texture assets, so since things have to be a bit blown up to fit the iPad screen (and you're obviously getting a bigger, more zoomed in view of the action), it doesn't look quite as amazing as the iPhone version. It's still a beautiful game, but it looks noticeably more last-gen than the iPhone iteration.

Infinity Blade is a turning point for iOS gaming. Epic has proven that Apple's popular mobile devices are capable of much more than what we've previously seen, and since they're now licensing their engine out for other developers to use, we're going to start seeing a lot of other games with with Infinity Blade's level of polish. Those games are going to have a lot to live up to though, because Infinity Blade isn't just a pretty face -- it's also one of the most mechanically solid, straight-up fun iPhone games I've ever played. Nintendo and Sony beware -- the next generation of handheld gaming is already here.

iPad News: iPad to Get Google Instant Previews

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 1:34pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under iPad    */

If you’ve been enjoying Google’s new Instant Preview feature on the ‘net, soon you’ll be able to use it on Apple’s iOS mobile devices including the iPad.

20110131 Googlprev iPad News: iPad to Get Google Instant Previews

Google’s Instant Preview was introduced in November 2010, and it’s a great time saver for computer users who do a lot of searches. Instant Preview does just what the term suggests, giving you a preview of search results that highlights the relevant sections so you can see what’s on the page before loading it. Now Google is bringing the Instant Preview feature to iOS mobile devices including iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch.

This is really convenient for use on the big screen of the computer, but Instant Preview should be even more so on the smaller screens of mobile devices. Not having to load an entire new page by opening a separate tab in Safari will certainly make working on the iPad a faster, smoother experience.

Atari and Bedlam have big plans for Daggerdale

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 1:34pm [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Video Games    */

This year, Atari will be taking the Dungeons Dragons game franchise down the digital download-only route with Dungeons Dragons: Daggerdale. This is just the start of a new source of entertainment for DD fans, however.

“This is the first part,” Bedlam’s creative director Zandro Chan told Eurogamer. Chan, however, didn’t say exactly how many games they’re going to make, saying that they will still ”have to see how things pan out.”

daggerdale

Players will also get to see “how things pan out” in Daggerdale before they opt to take the plunge and buy it. Bedlam are now currently working on a downloadable demo.

Those familiar with 4th edition DD rules will probably realize that level tiers present a perfect opportunity for a trilogy. In 4th edition DD rules, players are in the Heroic tier from level 1 to 10. Level 11 to 20 is called the Paragon tier and level 21 to 30 is called the Epic tier.

According to Chan, Daggerdale will concentrate on the first ten levels. Players will be able to choose from a human fighter, the elven rogue, the halfling wizard and the dwarven cleric. Presumably, prestige classes will be made available in subsequent releases.

Apture Highlights Extension Enriches Chrome Browsing With Extra Information

/* Filed under News    */

Apture Highlights (free) is a supremely useful Chrome extension that makes it simple to get information, pictures and videos about any phrase you come across on the Web–with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of pleasure. It’s simple to use, saves plenty of time, and delivers useful and relevant information quickly.

Apture Highlights screenshotApture Highlights does a superb job of grabbing content from across the Web and putting it in easy reach of your Chrome browser.Using the Apture Highlights extension is a breeze. Highlight any text in Chrome, and a “Learn More” icon appears above it. Click the icon and nifty pop-up window appears, with a definition of the term, photos, and links to videos, pictures, and search results. Click a picture or video, and it appears in a full window over your screen. When you’re done viewing the picture or video, click the X, and it disappears.

Particularly useful is that Apture Highlights brings together information in one small pop-up that you otherwise might not have been able to find, or that you would have spent a great deal of time searching for. And because you interact with the pop-up, rather than the underlying Web page, you aren’t sent away from the Web page on which you began browsing.

Whether you’re using Chrome to do research or plan a trip, or you’re just plain curious, you’ll find Apture Highlights an extension that you’ll want to keep installed. It’s a keeper.

CleanStatus Tweaks And Hides Status Icons On iPhones

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 1:34am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Gadgets    */

Wanted to have an ability to customize the appearance of status bar of your iPhone? Now with a new tweak named as CleanStatus from Cydia, users will be able to clean or tweak them based on own preference, freeing up some limited space that you have on iOS devices.

  1. For the start, just head over to Cydia (assuming that you already have your iPhone jailbroken).
  2. On the main screen, tap on ‘Search’ and key in ‘CleanStatus’ and start the searching.
  3. You will notice the utility appeared in the list and tap on ‘Install’ to install the app into your iOS devices.

By now, you should be able to find a new configuration with the name of ‘CleanStatus’ under Settings for toggling selections. For instances, under the setting menu, there are Clock/Date, Signal Strength, Data Network, Carrier Name, Battery Performance, Rotation Lock and many more and simply toggle the desired one will activate the respective status icon for viewing. Take note that toggling ON will disable the icon whereas OFF will enable the icon.

While it doesn’t seem to help users much except customizing the appearance of your iOS devices’ status bar, but this is no doubt a simple tweak that can make your iOS devices look different from the rest. CleanStatus is available for free download under Cydia from ModMyi,com so do grab one to hide up to 19 different icons on your iOS devices.

Report: 3G Will Be Optional Feature of New Sony Portable

/* Posted January 31st, 2011 at 1:34am [Comments: none]    */
/* Filed under Video Games    */

Sony said this week that its next handheld, code-named Next Generation Portable (NGP), will feature 3G support. But an executive now says that not every model of the device will have it.

Although all versions of the NGP will support Wi-Fi, only one will feature the 3G network, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Andrew House told Eurogamer Thursday.

House told the European website that there would be an extra cost for the persistent connection, though he would not share any details beyond that.

The official spec sheet for NGP, which Sony released this week, made no mention of separate models — it simply said that the machine would sport a 3G antenna. Sony America representatives did not respond Friday to Wired.com’s requests for comment.

As anyone with a 3G-capable phone can vouch, the network isn’t nearly as fast as Wi-Fi. That’s why Sony doesn’t expect gamers to stress out over real-time games on 3G. Instead, House points to “asynchronous gaming,” users playing together but at different times.

By “keeping [the] link with you,” you’ll be able to take turns or respond to in-game attacks wherever you go, he says.

Next Generation Portable will have a high-resolution OLED screen, dual analog sticks and two touch panels.

Sony says it will release the device during the 2011 holiday season, although Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton indicated to Engadget that this does not necessarily mean a worldwide launch.
