i want to be able to play dvds on my wii. what are the risks of using a ‘homebrew’ and what is the best one to use – where can i find it. is there any other way to play dvds on a wii?

The risks are that it will definitely void your warranty, and could potentially brick your system.
That said, the best one to use would be the Twilight Hack. Then you can download all sorts of homebrew applications including a DVD player. Just go to http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Twilight_Hack to see.
There a few risks of using homebrew including breaking your wii, but most of the new homebrew sites area really good and provide satisfaction guarantee.
I wanted to play dvds on the wii as well. I found a great site called http://www.wiiunlockplus.com to do it. They have more information on playing dvds on wii. You should check them out.
homebrew is the way to go
then install a backup launcher and divx to play dvd’s

You can’t play DVD’s on your Wii, you can play DVD’s on an Xbox360 though.
