Couple of troubleshooting tips for you:
Can you make voice calls? If no, you could be in a no service area.
Call customer service, your registration on your sim card could be corrupt. They can resend it over the air. This can also sometimes be accomplished by simply power cycling the phone.
Can others around you access the internet? If no, there could be an outage on a SGSN (controls the data portion of cellular network) blocking you from being able to access (and others). Call customer service.
And finally: Do you have the data plan? There are Iphone customers who have managed to remove the data plan from their account. Done incorrectly, it does not repopulate the pay per use system operating code (or SOC) on the account, blocking usage.
If you have jailbroken your iPhone, you may have inadvertently deleted the carrier settings, which would also block your internet access.
The site you downloaded the jail break from hopefully will have the correct settings and how to input them, as different hacks change different things.

The same thing happened on my Samsung Jack, the 3G/EDGE stopped working completely and I could only connect with Wi-Fi. I don't know the answer to you're question, so hopefully someone else can help both of us.

You may not a have good cellular reception. If you do have good cell reception then try restoring your iphone, this usually fixes weird problem like this.
