do i need anything else other than the external hardrive and the soft modded wii. can i hav anything else on the hardrive without it interfering with the games.please help me with all my questions, thank you in advance. also can i play games from the external hard drive without a sd card.

There, only because writing all the steps on here is too tedious.
And copypastaing it seems weird.
No you dont need anthing else than that and a sd card (you need that plugged in at all times). You can have other things on the harddisk as well if you create more partitions only. Here is a great step by step guide: hhtp://www.howtomodyourwii.com
