How to Hack your PSP to 5.00 M33 (The Easy Way)
UPDATE (10-20-2008): 5.00 m33 is NO LONGER the latest hacked PSP Firmware. The newest one is 5.00 M33-3 and can be found HERE – How to hack the PSP.
So if you just bought a PSP and want to get into custom firmware, this is the right place to be. If you already have custom firmware on your PSP and just want to upgrade to 5.00,
skip below to the 5.00 section. If you want to bring your PSP to 4.01 M33
skip below to the 4.01 section. This works on all PSP’s that came from the factory with anything less than 4.00 Official Firmware (OFW).
Requirements for Hacking a Factory PSP:
1. PSP Pandora Battery
2. Memory Stick Pro Duo (64mb to 8gb TESTED so far – any will do).
3. psp-grader-v005-lite-setup
4. Official PSP 3.90 Firmware.
Steps:
1. Install PSP Grader on your computer.
2. Run PSP Grader and select the location of the 3.90 firmware and drive for your memory stick
3. Hit run and let the program create a “Magic Memory Stick” for you.
4. Your Memory stick is now ready, insert the Pandora’s Battery whilst holding the L should button on the PSP. Once the IPL has loaded on the PSP simply press the X button. Wait. After around 1 – 3 minutes the Flash shall be done, press X to shutdown the psp, it is now safe to remove the pandora battery. Its is very important to just wait and not switch off the PSP or remove the Memory Stick or Pandora’s Battery, it could result in a brick if you do not wait.
5. Once that is done, you can format the memory stick with your psp to use to load games. Games are normally loaded in the “ISO” folder. you need to hit select on the PSP to get the ISO mode correct. Use the “Sony NP9660″ one.
This was the easiest way I could find to get the PSP to 3.90 m33-3, from there you are going to just run one more updates to reach 5.0-m33
Steps to finish the hack to Version 5.00….
If you already have custom firmware you can skip the steps above and jump directly here.
How to Update your PSP to the latest 5.00 M33: This Update brings 3.90 m33 and 4.01 M33 PSP’s to 5.00 M33
What to do:
1. Download the Official PSP 5.00 Firmware here
2. Download the 5.00 M33 installer
3. Unextract the files you just downloaded
4. Rename the EBOOT.PBP file from the PSP_500_FW_UPDATE.RAR to 500.PBP
5. Move the 500.PBP file into the UPDATE foler from the 5.00M33.rar
6. Copy files over to the PSP memory stick in the Games directory.
7. Run the Update Program on your PSP, NOTE: Battery has to be atleast @78%

That’s it. You are all patched up to the latest version of the time of this posting!

Or, even easier (if you already have CFW 3.80 M33 and above), all you need to do is go to “Network Update” in the XMB. From what I understand, and I have tested it to make sure, in M33 Firmwares, all you need to do is the network update. It will download the newest M33 Firmware. If you are missing the Official Sony Firmware file, it will give you the option to download it, and then it will apply the M33 Update. No need to go hunting for CFW or OFW files and paste them into folders.
Once again, this ONLY works on CFW (M33) PSPs.
Whoops… forgot to mention. If a new firmware comes out (5.0 in this case), and Dark Alex and the M33 Team have not yet hacked it, the Network Update response will simply tell you that no Newer Firmware is available.
So it’s Dummy-proof.

I think the article above was written for newbies to PSP modding. As you stated, the 1st problem is that you have to have your PSP on custom firmware, and the first half of the article talks about that.
The second issue, is that some people are not able to get their PSP on their wireless network. You have to have a wireless network at your location, and the PSP doesn’t always work when you try to connect. I havent done it in a while but i had to allow like 802.11a and such to get on my network else it wouldnt work. There is a lot more issues if your router doesnt work well with your PSP.
I think the method stated above is prob the easiest if you havent configured your wifi, or the easiest for people new to the psp hacking world

Hello, I Have a Slim-PSP On Official Firmware 5.00. I want to get it to custom firmware, but i dont wanna get it to pandoras battery or none of that if its possible. I need some way to do that if its is possible. If nott i would would still like to switch it to custom firmware so i can play isos and put and do all other cool stuff u cant do on official firmware.I nedd Help in this people, hope one of u can help. if you have offical firmware, youre only option is to use a pandoras battery, its not to hard you can probably do it yourself, just buy an extra battery.. also, thats the only way to unbrick is to use the pandoras as well. hardmodding the battery may take a while, but once thats done you should be back up to cfw 5.00 m33-3 in no more than 2 hours if your very slow.

hi, my psp version is 4.01 m33-2 and whenever i change it to 5.00 m33-6 …the download works but when i turn my psp back on it just doesn’t on…it stays on the purlpe color and only the date and time appears can anyody help me out
