Just a few days ago the makers of the WiiKey mod chip for Nintendo Wii announced the availability of the latest iteration of their homebrew-enabling product. The WiiKey 2 modchip is compatible with every Wii model released out into the wild to date and is compatible with DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C-2, and D2E chipsets. They aren’t too clear what exactly the new WiiKey 2 provides over the old WiiKey, but it won’t matter because my guess is support is going to be dropped for the original WiiKey as its already being labeled a "legacy" product, so if you want to have any hope of future compatibility with new Wii game releases, you’ll need to use the WiiKey 2 from now on. Plus I haven’t seen any news about WiiKey updates for a few months now, with it being stuck at revision 1.9s for some time.

Of course, the WiiKey 2 will be updateable via DVD just like its predecessor. What looks to be a new feature is the region detection with fallback that will hopefully prevent any region bricks from occurring. Another new feature, again a guess, looks to be a recovery mode that will make it impossible to brick the mod chip with a bad flash. Unfortunately, there’s not anything there about preventing your Wii from bricking during a firmware update.

The WiiKey 2 is in the process of being shipped to distributors who pre-ordered right now.
