In this tutorial we are going to show you how to remove Vista and Sony’s lame recovery drive to free up space on your SSD or HD. We are going to use a standard USB CD-ROM and not anything special like usb flash drives.
What you need to Re-Install Windows:
1. USB CD-ROM(or flash card with windows – but this is not covered here)
2. Windows XP CD
3. Sony UX
For our install, we used a liteon slim USB CD-ROM Picutured here:
If you don’t have one you can get one from new egg for around 60 bucks (
LITE-ON Black USB 2.0 External Slim 8X DVD Drive Model DX-8A1H-05)
Steps for Installing Windows XP on a Sony UX:
1. During the Vaio loading screen hit FN and 2 at the same time to get your sony laptop into the bios screen.
2. Use the arrow keys and move to the Advanced tab
3. Go to external Drive Boot and enable it
4. Then use the arrow keys and move to the Boot tab
5. Change the order of the boot devices to 1. USB Optical Drive (*)
To change order use the + and – keys (to get to “+” you need to use “shift” and “=”)
6. Exit and then save changes.
7. Plug in the USB CD-ROM/DVD into your UX, and put in the Windows XP cd. It will load up and ask if you want to load from CD/DVD. Once you do that, its bascailly a normal Windows install!
8. After you complete the Windows XP install, you need to get the drivers to get your UX up and running.
Sull86 from MicroPC has provided these:
Download Drivers Here Size: 205mb
9. Load the Drivers in that order accordingly to what you have, and you should be all set.
After all of that, you UX should be ready to go!
