[ # ] How to Jailbreak iPhone v2.1 Firmware with QuickPWN 2.1 (Windows)
/* Posted September 19th, 2008 at 1:19pm *//* Filed under Apple, How-To, iPhone */

The moment every Windows user has been waiting for: QuickPwn 2.1 GUI has just been released for iPhone users wishing to upgrade their phones to the latest v2.1 firmware without having to jump through hoops and hurdles. We posted earlier ways to upgrade to 2.1 on Windows but this didn’t work for some people with 1600, 6, and 1400 errors or else left the iPhone boot screen blank. Now, however, all these problems should be resolved, we hope.
- Download QuickPwn 2.1 GUI version and extract the zip (there is no need to install). Additional mirrors available here, here or here.
- Grab the matching 2G or 3G restore firmware ipsw from Apple corresponding to your iPhone.
- Optional step to backup jailbroken apps: Install AptBackup which can be downloaded from Cydia. It will move your third party app data to a partition of memory on your iPhone to where iTunes will see it and will subsequently back it up during an iTunes backup sync. After a system restore and you get Cydia back, install AptBackup again and use it to restore your app data. It’s not 100% perfect but at least it won’t leave you starting from scratch.
- Upgrade to iTunes 8 (or download it directly and install it).
- Connect your iPhone to your PC via USB cable.
- Allow iTunes to upgrade your iPhone firmware to v2.1.
- After the iPhone is upgraded, launch QuickPwn.
- Click next after verifying your iPhone is connected via USB.
- QuickPwn 2.1 is able to automatically detect your device (2G, 3G, or iPod) for you.
- Browse to the 2G or 3G restore firmware ipsw file you downloaded in step 2. After the green checkmark appears, click the arrow button.
- On the next page, make sure you select the “Cydia” checkbox. You can check “Installer” and replace logo as desired. If you have a 2G iPhone and wish to unlock it, also make sure to check the “Unlock phone” option as well. Click the arrow button after making your selections.
- If you opted to unlock, you’ll need to download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader binaries. Browse to these in QuickPwn to load them. If you didn’t, you won’t get this screen so you can skip to the next step.
- Now click on the Go button which will bring up a screen with some instructions. Follow them exactly to a tee. Just to prepare, here are the directions: 1) Hold Home for 5 seconds, 2) Hold Home and Power together for 10 seconds, 3) Release Power but continue to hold Home for 30 seconds
- Then sit back and relax while QuickPwn does all the hard work for you, you’ll see some activity on your iPhone screen, but when it restarts finally, it’s ready to use.
- Bonus step to restore jailbroken apps: Install AptBackup again from Cydia and this time execute the restore function to bring back all your old apps.

Use AptBackup which you can install from Cydia to backup your jailbroken apps.

Yep, it works perfectly fine …infact gr8!
Also, I was able to get my cydea apps back using aptbackup, thanks adm_snackbar..
The only problem, I have now is that my app store apps (that were already installed since my earlier fw) are crashing. Trying to figure out what can be done ..In the worst case I ‘ll re install the apps

Is this what I would use to “enable” my iPhone for use with other cell companies?

What you’re referring to is unlocking. Currently only 2G iPhones can be unlocked with this tool. If you’ve got a 3G, you won’t be able to use it with other cellular providers just yet.

Question for those who have done this successfully - When you’re supposed to hold the Home button for 5 seconds, then the Home and Power button for 10 seconds, are you holding the Home button the entire time? Or do you hold Home for 5 seconds, let go, then hold Home and Power for 10? Thanks.

Do not let go of the Home button, keep holding it down.
