[ # ] Current Status on Unlocking iPhones with v2.0 Firmware

To keep it short and sweet: IT’S NOT OUT YET. Yes, there are developer teams that have successfully unlocked their own v2.0 upgraded iPhones but those teams have not released anything to the public. Nobody’s putting a date out on the streets but you can be sure that when it does come out, Code Retard will write out the steps for you in plain English so check back often.

The status from the iPhone Dev Team, makers of the Pwnage unlocking tool, right now includes a long list of reasons why they haven’t released the unlock yet. First off, they know it’s an important release that has big financial impact, specifically mentioning the impact of “cummy people” selling unlocking software. The won’t release a command line version of the tool because most iPhone users probably wouldn’t even know how to use it and plus there’s lots of room for error. They’re also afraid of other people creating front-end GUIs around it and possibly causing more harm than good, bricking other people’s iPhones with improper usage. Rather than let this happen, the iPhone Dev Team would rather take the time and make a decent solid release that everyone can use safely. From their blog:

We’re not sitting on this tool because we’re full of ourselves or stuck up our own asses. We’re not sitting on it cause we like to see you writhe. We are testing it to make sure it’s as glitch-free as we can make it. We want to avoid releasing something that turns expensive phones into pretty looking paperweights. Don’t you agree it’s worth the wait?

Meanwhile Zibri of ZiPhone fame makes a similar case, saying:

IF and WHEN there will be a new ZiPhone you will be informed. Stop asking, hating, begging.
By the way, maybe you don’t know the difference, but ZiPhone was a real hack. Software upgrades or custom firmwares are a totally different thing. A nice proof of concept, a nice work, but that’s not hacking.. But if that will ever be released and that suits your needs, use it. You’ll be (hopefully) happy.

I’m assuming you have a first-generation iPhone because otherwise you wouldn’t be upgrading anything. In that case, you should follow our 2.0.1 installation steps which include how to unlock your iPhone.
