Earlier this morning, macrumors found a hidden link on Apple’s servers to enable early access to the iPhone v2.0 firmware before its release. While Apple has notified macrumors to remove the link, we were able to save it before it got taken down. Follow these steps to upgrade your iPhone to firmware 2.0 and start enjoying all the new features and official apps now.
- If you jailbroke your iPhone with ZiPhone by iphone-steps-using-ziphone-with-pics/”>following our steps, I’d suggest you do a restore on it by clicking “Prepare for Upgrade” and following the steps to restore it back to 1.1.4 firmware first. While the following procedures will still work even if you skip this step, it’s really up to you if you want to minimize risk.
- Download the 2.0 firmware update. If it gets renamed with a .zip extension, make sure to restore it back to a .ipsw extension.
- Connect your iPhone and launch iTunes 7.7 (it’s new so you may need to update it).
- Make sure your iPhone is on full sync as the new firmware will wipe your existing data and re-sync.
- On Windows, hold down shift as you click on “Check for Update” in iTunes (on Macs, it’s the Option button)
- This allows you to manually specify the location of the update on your computer, so browse to where you saved the ipsw file you just downloaded and update your iPhone with that firmware.
- After a few minutes you should be running 2.0 firmware on your iPhone. Enjoy!
Note that this won’t work on the iPod Touch. Remember, even though Apple will be releasing the 3G iPhone tomorrow, the 2.0 firmware will still install on your first-gen iPhone, even if it was jailbroken. Just remember that if you had unlocked it to work with another carrier besides AT&T, it won’t work anymore so weigh the benefits and consequences before you try this (at least until someone comes up with a way to unlock it on 2.0 which I hear has already been done). So just be patient. Also be prepared to lose all your Installer apps.
