Garmin Stocks take dive as profits fell and Nuvifone delayed (GRMN)

/* Posted July 30th, 2008 at 3:35pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under News */

Garmin’s Stock prices took a major dump today off news of them not hitting their 2nd quarter earning targets and of the delay of the much anticipated new Nuvifone product.

"While we had hoped to have carrier launches in the fourth quarter, we have found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated," Garmin said. "We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements. We anticipate launching the product during the first half of 2009."

Looks like we wont be seeing a Nuvifone until the first half of 2009…whenever that is…

Unknown Animal Washes Ashore In Montauk

monster Washes Ashore In Montauk

An unknown animal has allegedly washes ashore on the eastern tip of Long Island, in a town called Montauk. My best guess is that this is just a hoax to drum up support for a future movie about a book called “Montauk Project”. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montauk_Project_(book)

Hoax or not, that picture looks pretty wicked.

This is an actual monster, some sort of rodent-like creature with a dinosaur beak. A tipster says that there is "a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island," but unless the government is trying to design horrible Montauk monsters that will eat IEDs and fart fire at bad Iraqis, we're not sure why they would create such an unthinkable beast. Our guess is that it's viral marketing for something.

New PS3 2.42 Update Released: Fixes Audio Playback

/* Posted July 30th, 2008 at 2:54pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under PS3, Sony, Video Games */

PS3 Update 2.42 addresses the quality in the playback for some PlayStation 3 format software. (Including Call of Duty 4) There are no new features added to this release and the XMB bascailly looks unchanged. A few updates ago, Sony released 2.40 which ended up breaking thousands of video game consoles, and now are only releasing minimal changes.

Some users are waiting a few days to make sure no one is having issues with the newest fixes.

Most of the early reports are that the Update is fine and have actually helped with their game play:

Hi, I have just downloaded it and I can’t see a difference expect in when I’m playing call of duty, it doesn’t say downloading game settings a lot only for a few seconds. I am also more connected and not getting games quit because I am disconnecting from the access point. This update has really helped me now I can finish matches without counting them as a loss with a few seconds to go

Nintendo goes on Raids, seizing close to 30,000 game copying products

/* Posted July 30th, 2008 at 1:36pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under DS, News, Nintendo */

“Nintendo takes a global approach to piracy and has pursued the illegal game copying devices in 11 countries this past year,” said the company.

“Nintendo has worked with enforcement officials in Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, UK, and the US, seizing close to 30,000 infringing game copying products, as well as taking actions against those distributors and manufacturers.”

One day after they announced a lawsuit against manufacturers and distributors of the R4 Revolution device, Nintendo has reported that they have already seized over 30,000 piracy devices which they believe infringe company copyrights.

The lawsuit, a joint venture with 54 other publishers hopes to get injunctions on the R4 and other devices that promote piracy on the Nintendo DS.

Newer Slim PSP coming with TA-088 Motherboards - NOT HACKABLE, yet

/* Posted July 30th, 2008 at 9:32am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Mods, PSP, Sony, Video Games */

ta-088

Update - TA-088 v3 MB’s are the only ones not hackable at this time (8/13/08)

As of this month, there have been reports of newer Slim models utilizing the TA-088 motherboards rendering Despertar del Cementerio (DC), Pandora, and Time Machine useless.

The new motherboard blocks Custom/unsigned IPLs from loading from the memory stick; that’s likely a result of the kernel 1.50 & 3.40 mix. With that said, we won’t see a new version of DC — Dark_AleX’s universal unbricker — until the revamped core and interface is finished. So in the meantime, be careful.

A post on the Dark AleX blog addressed the problems with running Despertar del Cementerio, Pandora, and Time Machine on certain PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite with TA-088 motherboards.

According to the announcement posted by webmaster Alek, the IPL used for the three applications doesn’t work. Now interestingly enough, IPLs can still be run from the Memory Stick, but are limited to those signed by Sony. This in turn “will probably block the actual way of running your cfw’s, as you couldn’t even load on this NANDs the custom IPLs with different signature.” He explained the problem further:

Even though, IPL is not the problem, but probably the mixed kernel of 1.50&&3.40, and it will be the best option to use a new kernel on Despertar del Cementerio future versions.

So what does this mean for homebrew users? Well, a “new Dc version will not be released till the new Core and interface is finished.” So does this mean that they’ll find a way to get around the problem? Most definitely. All they need is a little time.

DAX WILL BREAK IT!!!

super monkey ball

Unless you use Cydia, there’s no other way to install iPhone 2.0 apps without going through iTunes and you can definitely forget about installing official first party apps that way… or can you? Some ingenious hackers have manage to crack the official first party Super Monkey Ball app from Sega, turning the $9.99 game into a free one. Want to learn how to install SMB on your own 2.0 iPhone for free? The steps are fairly involved, meaning there’s no silver bullet Pwnage-like application to do it for you, but the reward is worth the effort. For those of you who remain unfazed, read on.
