Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
The “Twilight Hack” is a way to safely run homebrew on an unmodded Nintendo Wii. Today the 0.1beta1 version came out with workaround support for the newest Wii System Menu update v3.3. A mere days after Nintendo patched the exploit in v3.2 with 3.3, this Twilight Princess homebrew launch hack is compatible with the latest Wii update. To run this hack, you need a Wii (duh), the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that has been run at least once on your Wii, and an SD card. The hack file contains several versions of save games that you will need to choose correctly depending of your version of the Zelda game. The easiest way to check your version is to compare the text string which is on the inner circle of the data surface with the ones below.

Different Versions
Region Inner circle text File Save Slot
Europe/Australia RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN data.bin Twilight Hack
Asia RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN data.bin Twilight Hack
America RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN data.bin TwilightHack0
America RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA data.bin TwilightHack0
America RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA data.bin TwilightHack2

Next, follow these directions:

  1. Format your SD card to FAT16 or FAT32 if it is not already.
  2. If it does not already exist, make a directory called “/private/wii/title/RZDx/” on your SD card; replace “RZDx” with RZDE (US), RZDP (Europe) or RZDJ (Japan) as appropriate based on the inner circle text. Copy the above “data.bin” file from the package with the matching directory path into the directory you created on your SD card.
  3. Next, take your homebrew Wii executable (find some here), and save it in the root directory of your SD card as “boot.elf”.
  4. Now, put the SD card into your Wii and turn it on. Go into Wii Options –> Data Management –> Save Data –> Wii.
  5. Find your Zelda save, click on it, and click “Erase”, and click Yes.
  6. Now, go into SD card, and select the “Twilight Hack” save (the icon says “Wiibrew Loader”). Click copy, and yes. Now, go back out of that menu.
  7. Insert Zelda, and run the game. Load the file corresponding to the correct save slot as indicated in the table above (US only), and either walk backwards, or talk to the guy that’s standing in front of you.

You have to use the correct data.bin that corresponds to the first Zelda disc you ever inserted into your Wii. If one doesn’t work, try another.
