40GB PS3 Firmware Update to Add PS2 Backwards Compatiblity?

Rumors have been circulating that the 40GB Sony PlayStation 3, which unlike the 60GB and 80GB models does not support any PS2 backwards compatibility, will be getting a firmware update in October later this year that will enable gamers to once again play their old PS2 games on the 40GB PS3. While the 60GB uses a hardware solution and the 80GB a hybrid hardware and software emulation to playback PS2 games, the 40GB, which contains no PS2 hardware whatsoever, might have available a firmware update that will offer a pure software emulation solution much like how PSOne games can be played on all PS3 models, that is if this rumor is true. While it’s technically incorrect to say that the 40GB PS3 has no backwards compatibility because it can emulate the hardware for playing PSOne games, gamers buying the 40GB model cannot play any of their old PS2 games on it. This rumor offers a glimmer of hope for 40GB PS3 owners.
The ability to play PS2 games was taken out of the 40GB PS3 in an effort by Sony to cut down on manufacturing costs by leaving out PS2 hardware and offer a lower price to consumers. The 60GB/80GB units were costing Sony $700/$800 just to manufacture and by selling them at $500/$600 they were bleeding money… losing $200 on each unit sold. Since Sony will soon be offering PS2 games as downloadable content on the PlayStation network, it’s at least believable that this rumor is true. The rumor came from a Sony importer from Germany.

i can only hop to god that this is true, in game chat, and xmb should hold me off till then, PS3 FTW!
How is this even possible though? There is no way with PS3’s hardware specs that it could run a decent PS2 emulator, unless it was some sort of HLE multi-thred emulation that wasn’t timing specific… But then that wouldn’t be true emulation.
@Chuck, the only PS2 emulation you have seen is by Un-Official Developers which had to discover on their own devices how the PS2 assigns different addresses and maps memory etc.
remember Sony designed the console im sure they can find work arounds to run it perfectly with out us dev’s using sloppy backwards code compiled by total amateurs when it comes to the PS2 internals
the 40GB should be able emulate the PS2 using its own mappings and hardware without the need of an EE chip. im not sure myself how but Sony designed it so they can fix it
it wont use an internal HLE BIOS as the PS3 hardware is sufficient to run without one
but it may be quite sluggish but it should get it done

my son bought one of the 40GB he took it back because it would not play all his PS2 games. He exchanged it for the 80GB and it plays all the PS2 games. I have the 40GB but haven’t tryed PS2 games in it. I will try and then I’ll let people know.
If the poorly coded PCSX2 emulator worked on high end PCs well although not perfect, a software emulation to Play Ps2 games
by Sony is a possibility and it wud be done thru a firmware update. I bet this isn’t a fake one bit!!
I never owned a PS2 and will never lay my hands on it although games like Gow can still tempt, i can manage with Gow 3 for Ps3.

even if the hardware for the 40 gb ps3 could support ps2 games you have to look at the coding……i mean ps2 games have a special coding pressed into them that ps3s hardware cannot read UNLESS god came into sonys factories and programmed the ps3’s to do so

I believe it will be true. I hate having two systems hooked up to my tv at the same time. It’s a nightmare! The Xbox 360 and Wii have software emulation for BC, That’s just not fair.I want this competition to be fair and square. I have a petition for people to sign to make this happen.

I got also a PS3 40GB, I didn’t know when I buy it that it can’t play the ps2 games… but then, why in the ps3 menu in the 40Gb model, u can create an internal memory card for PS1 and Ps2 /:)??? u can create an interenal memory for what??? they say u cannot play the ps2games on the 40GB model, but why the hell u got the option to createa a memory internal card for PS1 and PS2 games, please, this world turned upside down…. please assault_shinobi@yahoo.com
I get my PS3 in December 2007 a 40GB… an he got an internal memory for the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games, that, in fact, they know back then they will develop a software for the ps3 40GB, and that’s the fact they put the internal memory card option on the 40GB, there’s no such thing as good new, i realized this 8 months ago… they lied… they don’t care about us, only money…
personally i believe the ps3 has more then enough power to emulate a ps2. i have the august 08 release of the 80 gig (40 gig version with 80 gig drive lol) and it can read the disks just doesn’t play it, so we do know that the ps3 as it is can read a ps2s disk and tell what it is,its just missing the software to run the files. if u dont know about the ps3s cell processor heres some *lite* reading about it lol

Someone has got to be able to do this, I’ve heard of Xbox owners upgrading there hard drives( these systems use laptop hard drives) and over clocking the memory, so I’m sure someone somewhere has already done this. I just hope I find out myself someday.
The 40gb does NOT play PS2 games at all. When I put a PS2 disc in , The CD icon comes up but next to it instead of saying what game I put in, it says PS2 disc unsupported format. I tried to play Final Fantasy X-2 but no dice. I cant find my ps1 games so I havent tried that yet. Im pretty sure it does play PS1 though. Im not too worried about it not playing ps2, because I still have mine. Although it would be so convenient to play them all on one console! I give Sony 10 points for making a great system, but minus several million for not having FULL backwards compatibily. Its not our fault you charged 300$ less then what it cost to make them :P I hope somebody got fired.
Unfortunately for some unknown reason Sony has taken any PS2 compatibility out of the PS3 system. Perhaps this is because they are working on a full software based emulator, perhaps they just hate us. Frankly I don’t know.
What I do know is that this change in emulation of PS2 games is only noted on their main .com website and not on the regional sites.

Why would you need Backwards compatability, if the game developers got of there arses and wrote new games instead of copying other titles off the playstation 2 the we wouldnt have to worry about it. Although saying that When do we Get the greatest racing game in the world and not just some shitty 6 track extended demo of Gran Turismo 5. We want 200+ tracks and over 1500 cars to be even worth my intrest. Nurburgring rules….
I have the 80 gb version of the ps3…. I got it on august 20, 2008 from the US. But, where I live doesnt have the PS store…. and I heard that theres a ps2 format pack or something out in the PS store… so is there any way to download that off the net? Also, is the firmware update out yet??? Thanks!

Sony’s gay bunch of fagets for taking off the backwards compatbilty even if they did it to save money they just a multi million dollar company who won’t release a simple update that will allow backwards compabtlity just to drain those dollars out of the few remaining games their making for ps2 i have a newer 80gb ps3 and im pissed of at sony until they let me play ps2 games on my ps3 not that it matters but why can other people play them using their shitter ps3 60gb .
Its not really only for the 40GB I just got a 80GB today and turns out mine doesn’t play PS2 games I discovered this when I was tryinG to play My Soul Caliber 3 on the PS3 and it didn’t work
