According to marketing research group DFC Intelligence, the current batch of gaming consoles on the market today will be forecasted to outsell their previous generation counterparts by 2011, changing their forecast from 2012 largely due to the record breaking year of over $50 billion in video game sales in 2007. By 2011, 180 million consoles are forecasted to be sold.
DFC Intelligence forecasts that the Wii console will come out on top as the winner with the largest installed base. Not really a surprise to anyone, what’s notable is their revising of where the PS3 will end up compared to the Xbox 360. Two years ago they had could not say for certain whether it would be able to stand up to Microsoft’s offering. However, after studying the market for two years and the fact that ths PS3 price has gone down tremendously coupled with a solid gaming library, analysts are certain the PS3 will end up as number 2, surpassing the Xbox by 2009. This means the console war outcome could be:
- Nintendo Wii
- Sony PlayStation 3
- Microsoft Xbox 360
However, factor in software sales and Sony could be giving Nintendo a run for its money.
Despite the looming recession and cutdown on consumer spending over the next few years, gaming consoles could actually benefit from higher gas prices as more people stay at home for entertainment and play video games.
