genplus sega genesis emulator

Genesis Plus emulates a Sega Genesis or MegaDrive console. It has been originally written by Charles MacDonald and ported to the Nintendo GameCube by the “Genesis Plus” Team.

It is an open source emulator and a community project which aims to bring you blast processing into the past. Using this “emulator” you will be able to enjoy all of your classic 16-bit games in all of their glory. Genesis Plus has been converted from a PC based platform to run on the GameCube’s proprietary PPC Gekko processor and features customized code to give you the best gaming experience possible.

This port is based on Genesis Plus 1.2 source code but it has been largely modified to improve overall compatibility, emulation accuracy as well as adding various peripheral supports and interface extra features. Read more »

Crytek CEO Cries River when talking about PC Piracy

/* Posted June 30th, 2008 at 3:02pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under News, Video Games */

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli is in the news again for talking about how PC game piracy has affected his company and sales of its blockbuster hit Crysis. Last month, Yerli said the company would no longer be PC exclusive because of piracy and would bring future titles to multiple platforms.

In this most recent interview, Yerli was asked what he felt were the reasons behind Crysis’ “lacluster” sales and he responded with putting most of the blame on PC piracy.

“The PC industry is really, at the moment, I would say the most intensely pirated market ever. It’s crazy how the ratio between sales to piracy is probably 1 to 15 to 1 to 20 right now,” Yerli said.

“For one sale there are 15 to 20 pirates and pirate versions, and that’s a big shame for the PC industry. I hope with Warhead I hope we improve the situation, but at the same time it may have an impact on [our] PC exclusivity in the future.”

guitar hero figures macfarlane

McFarlane Toys will be making a line of 6-inch figures based on the wildly successful Guitar Hero video game. The four action figures, Johnny Napalm, Axel Steel, God of Rock, and Lars Ümlaut are actual characters in the game and trumpet the first wave of figures in a series to come. Each figure will have at least 15 opposable parts including a removable guitar. The retail price will vary from $10 to $15 depending on the character. MacFarlane is set to release the first Guitar Hero series figures in November to accompany the release of Guitar Hero World Tour.

Apple iPhone 3G Parts Cost Breakdown

/* Posted June 26th, 2008 at 3:38pm [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Apple, iPhone */

Interesting to see the cost of a few key parts of the 3G iPhone. The total cost of just these components adds up to $118.04 of the estimated $173 cost.

  • 8-GB NAND Flash Memory: $22.80
  • 2-Megapixel camera module: $7.00
  • Improved touch screen: $20.00
  • WLAN chipset: $4.00
  • Battery: $4.00
  • GPS: $3.60
  • Motion Sensor / Accelerometer: $2.00
  • HSDPA Digital Baseband: $15.00
  • Application Processor: $13.50
  • RF Transceiver: $4.25
  • Display: $20.00
  • 64-Mbit NOR Flash Memory, 32-Mbit PSRAM: $1.89

Wow a GPS unit only costing $3.60?! I’m betting more than one company bent over backwards price-wise to get the privilege to supply their chips for the iPhone. I think the bragging rights would be worth more than the royalties.

New York’s Gay Senate Passes a “Violent Video Game” Bill

/* Posted June 26th, 2008 at 3:17pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under News */

A new bill has just passed in New York that will allow a governmental advisory council to “examine the potential impact of violent videogames” and now heads off to the Governor before it can become a law. It passed almost unanimously in the Senate by a 61-1 vote.

If Governor David Paterson signs the bill, then the law will go into effect September 1st, 2010. The legislation will require that all console systems be equipped with parental controls and that ESRB ratings must be displayed on packaging. These practices are already standard, but neither is by bound by law and are done voluntarily.

The advisory council will consist of 16 members and will get to make recommendations regarding the current ESRB rating system. They can also offer “a parent-teacher violence awareness program to identify and appropriately assist students who may have a propensity toward violence.”

Senator Andrew Lanza added of the bill, “There is some confusion with respect to what this bill actually accomplishes… The word prohibition was talked about. I want to be clear. This bill does not prohibit the sale of any video to anyone.”

“This simply says that every video game sold in the state of New York simply should have a rating consistent with what the ESRB does presently in a voluntary way… it does work. But the problem with ‘voluntary’ is that tomorrow someone can change their mind. Someone could decide tomorrow to no longer place ratings on these games. So this is not about prohibiting the sale, this is simply about providing information to parents.”

PSP Cell Phone Coming Soon?

/* Posted June 26th, 2008 at 3:12pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under News */

We already know we can use the Sony PSP as a phone with the Skype headset kit, but according to a new Marketing Week article, Sony is reviving talks of a PSP-based mobile phone and that it could possibly drop the Ericsson name, at least for that one model.

Citing multiple sources from Japan and Korea, the article says the phone would “include elements of the PSP gaming handheld and that the process would be relatively simple, as components such as Wi-Fi are already well-suited to the device.”

There was no other specifics mentioned besides the Wi-Fi but the dropping of UMD is almost a given due to its bulkiness and low popularity. The phone could go commercial by the holiday season 2009.

Sony Ericsson currently has a gaming phone, the F305, but it does not include and PlayStation hardware or software.

More interestingly, the article spoke about how Sony and Ericsson are currently “frosty” towards each other and that the new phone could lead to a permanent break up. Sony allegedly wants to keep its own hardware, such as PlayStation and Walkman, all to itself.

iPhone 2.0 Firmware to Have Secure Erase

/* Posted June 26th, 2008 at 1:23pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, iPhone */

iphone firmware 2.0 secure erase

Earlier we reported that your refurbished iPhone could contain the previous owner’s data due to Apple’s not very stringent data wiping process. To address precisely that issue, the next revision firmware v2.0 will be adding a secure erase function to genuinely wipe off all your personal data, in addition to some other new and improved features.

The entire process takes about an hour which is a small price to pay for the added security. The current iPhone firmware does not have this feature and has forced users to resort to their own methods to wipe their data, though most approaches don’t do anything useful except suck up battery life. This new feature will make securely erasing data much more accessible for general masses as well as fix Apple’s lax wiping methods. The new firmware can’t come soon enough.
