XBOX 360 White on green background

Microsoft announced today that its Xbox 360 gaming console has been sold over 10 million times here in the States since it launch in 2005. Microsoft’s senior VP of Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick was quick to point out that theirs was the first console to reach this number, “History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry.” Worldwide, sales for the Xbox 360 have reached 19 million. Historically, it looks like the Xbox 360 might be winning the console war thanks to its head start on the PS3 and Wii and its extensive gaming library. But don’t count Nintendo out yet. Read more »

Accidentally xkill Your Linux Taskbar?

/* Posted May 14th, 2008 at 11:39am [Comments: 1] */
/* Filed under Linux */

linux xkill

I use “xkill” on Linux a lot because it saves you from having to list all the processes running and then individually “kill -9″-ing all the threads you think are associated with the process. It usually does an excellent job of finding the right threads to terminate and gives a visual way to pick out what to kill: just point and click. Unfortunately if you’re not careful you can easily terminate the wrong application as there is no “are you sure?” check in the xkill command. Occasionally, I’ve accidentally killed my beloved taskbar and while it doesn’t really affect the running programs, it’s annoying that I can’t visually switch between virtual desktops or see what other windows I have open and on which desktop. When this happens, you can bring it back by executing the “kicker” command. Simple as that. It will bring back your taskbar, just be aware that is becomes a child process of whatever you launched it from so shutting down from the taskbar requires you to close the parent process, sort of like a chicken and egg problem. Embarrassingly, I’ve had to use “kicker” a few too many times.

Refurbished 8GB iPhone for $249, 16GB for $349 from AT&T

/* Posted May 14th, 2008 at 10:17am [Comments: 2] */
/* Filed under Apple, Deals, iPhone */

This is the same Apple iPhone deal from AT&T as last time except they’ve now got the 16GB in stock for $349! Hurry before supplies run out. According to Apple, once they’re gone, they’re gone. This is cheaper than the refurbs you can get direct from the Apple Store (if you could still get them). There’s no need to buy the 2 year activation contract if you plan to use your own SIM card and unlock your iPhone to use with your current GSM service (that would be either T-Mobile or AT&T). So what are you waiting for? Order it now from AT&T.

Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Master 2 DS Unboxing Pics

/* Posted May 13th, 2008 at 7:11pm [Comments: 4] */

Taiko Drum Master no Tatsujin 2

I ordered Taiko no Tatusjin 2 (Drum Master in English) for my DS very soon after its release from play-asia for a little over $50. I couldn’t resist. The game comes with two special drum stylus pens that are actually quite well suited for the game (it’s way better than using two regular DS stylus pens). I actually got the game last Friday but I’ve been too busy playing it nonstop to post any unboxing pics, but today my wrist is a bit cramped up so my loss is your gain. The game also ships with some cool stickers on the back of which written in Japanese is a suggestion to stick them all over your daily planner. Silly Namco, I can’t stick stickers on my iPhone. Anyhow the game’s awesome and is lots of fun to play. A $48.90 price is a bit steep but consider that you’re getting a Japanese import and some extra hardware. I had no problems playing it on my US Nintendo DS as the DS does not suffer from region locking like the Wii. Unboxing pic below. Plus I threw in the game trailer just for kicks. Read more »

eBay Vs. Craigslist, Round II. Craigslist Punches Back With Its Own Lawsuit.

/* Posted May 13th, 2008 at 4:31pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under News */

Following the lawsuit eBay filed against Craigslist two weeks ago, Craigslist is punching back today. In a countersuit (complaint embedded below), Craigslist wants back the 28.4 percent of its shares that eBay bought in 2004. It also wants the court to award Craiglsit eBay’s related profits, and punitive damages on top of it all. Craigslist is accusing eBay of:

unlawful and unfair competition, misappropriation of proprietary information, deceptive passing-off, business interference, false advertising, phishing attacks, free-riding, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and breaches of fiduciary duty.

Find Virtual Console and Wii Ware Block Sizes

/* Posted May 13th, 2008 at 10:17am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Nintendo, Reference, Wii */

Wii Main Menu with Virtual Console Wii Ware

If you’ve discovered how to install virtual console WAD file channels onto your Wii, then you’ve probably asked yourself at least once, “Do I have enough free blocks on my Wii to fit ___ game?” We already warned you that trying to install all VC games in existence would fill up your Wii memory pretty quickly so the trick is to pick and choose the games you want to play while maximizing your memory usage. Doing so would require knowing the block size requirements of each game. Well you are in luck, as this wiki has a constantly updated list of size requirements for all downloadable Wii content (that’s Virtual Console, Wii Ware and Wii Channels) sorted by region (NTSC-U, PAL, NTSC-J) and then by console platform. If you’d prefer just to see the US releases ordered by release date in blog format, head on over to KingBroly’s. Use it to look up any NTSC-U or PAL games you’re thinking of installing to find out if they will fit on the remaining memory on your Wii. Read more »

Looking for an iPhone? Don’t Look Online

/* Posted May 12th, 2008 at 3:34pm [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, iPhone */

iPhone

Apple confirmed today that iPhones are no longer available from the online Apple store. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find any iPhones for sale at AT&T’s website or any other mobile carriers’ websites worldwide that have partnered with Apple to carry the iPhone like O2 in the UK, T-Mobile in Germany, and Orange in France as the supply from Apple’s warehouses has dried up. Why hasn’t Apple been making more iPhones? The answer is they probably haven’t, it’s just that they’re probably busily manufacturing the newer faster 3G iPhone that’s rumored to be released in June during the Worldwide Apple Developer’s Conference. If you’re still in need of an iPhone, Apple recommends you try the brick and mortar Apple and AT&T stores as some may have units still available. If you’ve always wanted one you’d better hurry though because once they’re gone from inventory, you can bet they are not going to be replenished… until June anyways.

Orb Networks can stream live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch

/* Posted May 12th, 2008 at 9:20am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Apple, Mods, News, iPhone, iPod */

Orb Networks is claiming that they have developed “the world’s first way to stream live TV to the iPhone and iPod Touch.”

OrbLive, as the application is called, will work with “jailbroken” iPhones and iPod Touches. Despite being the “first” to make an application of the sort, it is really not all that special. Users install the Orb streaming application on their TV-tuner enabled PCs and OrbLive on their handheld devices. You then set the PC to live TV and stream it directly using the Wi-Fi.

Adds Orb’s CEO, Joe Costello, “Although the iPhone provides users with a great way to experience the Web, it offers a ridiculously sub-par streaming video experience. When all the carriers’ free phones can stream lots of things that my iPhone can’t, something’s seriously wrong. OrbLive finally brings the iPhone’s streaming video experience up to par with other mobile phones.”
