Install DD-WRT Firmware on Linksys WRT150N, WRT160N Wireless Routers

linksys wrt150n wireless router

Recently I bought a new Linksys WRT150N wireless router because I was fed up with my current one and because I had heard the famed DD-WRT firmware could be installed on it, effectively turning a cheap router into an expensive one. My old SMC router would drop connections about once a month and it really lacked the customizability that I required for my networking needs. For example, do you know how much of a pain it is to forward port ranges one port at a time with a 10 port limit? I also was not able to assign static IPs to my computers within the subnet (though to give my even older router credit, I could do this before).

I’ve documented the steps so you can follow along too should you decide one day that your standard router firmware just isn’t doing enough for you. Though these steps are for the Linksys WRT150N and WRT160N routers, they are pretty much applicable to any router (that can support DD-WRT that is). Read more »

Snes9xTYLsmcm Test 5 new Improved SNES Emulator for PSP

/* Posted May 30th, 2008 at 10:46am [Comments: 14]    */

Over the past few days you’ve likely spotted several SNES test builds circulating the scene. While the Japanese developer (or developers?) remains anonymous, people are talking, and word on the virtual street is, Ruka — you know, the talent behind NesterJ — may be responsible for the number of recent updates. Evidently, Snes9xTYLsmcm is based off the initial developments of YoyoFR and Laxer3a.

Anyway… I finally had the opportunity to sit down, install the latest test build, and kick some serious alien ass in Contra III – the Alien Wars. Fans of the Super NES — you need this emulator, no questions asked. It’s slick.

GTA IV Better on Xbox 360!? Which system is GTA4 better on?

/* Posted May 30th, 2008 at 10:31am [Comments: 7]    */

This might start a fan boy war! According to Rockstar spokesperson Hosi Simon, Grand Theft Auto IV will be a better experience on the Xbox 360. He said this in an interview with Games Radar.

They’re identical games. We’re not hardware makers, and we’re not like a pawn between these companies, we try not to be as much as we can. We make great games for people to enjoy on whichever system they want. But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose.”

Some days ago, we had reported that Microsoft had paid a whooping $50 million to Rockstar for the episodic content for the Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360. These updates will be launched in early 2008.

Music sales through Rock Band compete with iTunes – and sometimes they win

/* Posted May 30th, 2008 at 10:18am [Comments: none]    */

As music-based games like Guitar Hero and Rock Star continue to enjoy strong sales, they’ve also created an interesting niche market for music sales. In fact the two titles have reportedly sold more than 25 million downloads combined. While most of the songs which can be downloaded for each game are familiar radio staples, a handful are new or relatively new tracks that aren’t nearly as well known. You might think that’s a recipe for slow sales on the newer titles, but that’s not necessarily the case.

In fact it turns out that in at least a few cases sales through Rock Band, which are limited to playback using the game, have outpaced downloads from other services. According to Tenth Street Entertainment who manage Motley Crue, a new track from the band has been downloaded more than 47,000 times via the game. By comparison Nielsen SoundScan indicates that only 10,000 copies have been soldy by services like iTunes and Amazon.com.

Get a Used Wii at GameStop for $249.99

Yes you read that right. A GameStop in Florida sold a returned Wii to a man at its full retail value at $249.99. When asked what justified selling a used product for a new price, the clerk explained, “The Wii is extremely hard to find, that’s why it’s $250 used.” What’s worse, the store managed to get the poor guy to buy the console at that price without even knowing if the warranty was still valid. Sure the Wii is hard to find but if you are patient and actively search (and are willing to line up a few hours before opening time on Sundays mornings) you should be able to procure a NEW unused Wii for $249.99. Either the patron didn’t realize this or else just didn’t care. Either way, we as consumers have to protest something like this when it happens by not buying. GameStop is a huge chain, it should be respectable. I can understand if a mom and pop shop did this for a quick buck, but why does GameStop need to do this? It only tarnishes their image. Stooping so low as to sell an old Wii for the price of a new one just goes to show you what a crummy place GameStop is.

Xbox 360 System of Choice in UK?

/* Posted May 30th, 2008 at 9:59am [Comments: 3]    */
/* Filed under Microsoft, News, PS3, Sony, Video Games, Xbox    */

According to data from Chart-Track, sales of the Xbox 360 are over 18 percent ahead of the PlayStation 3 in UK sales since the launch of GTA IV.

After the first month of sales of the game it has also become clear that the Xbox 360 is the clear format of choice for gamers in the UK. 57 percent of total game sales for GTA IV were for the 360 compared to 43 percent for the PS3.

Chart-Track also added that sales for the game in the UK are at about 1.3 million for the first month of sales, meaning about 750,000 of those copies were sold for the 360.

It seems the game has had a a huge effect on hardware sales as well. For the four weeks after the launch, compared to the four weeks before, 360 sales have jumped 47 percent compared to a lowly 8 percent on the PS3.

Audio Signal Generator and Signal Detector

/* Posted May 29th, 2008 at 5:01am [Comments: 5]    */
/* Filed under Audio, Hardware, How-To, Music    */

Final image of Tone

This article is a great troubleshooting tip based on the “tool of a thousand uses”, the good old tone generator, tone detector. Everyone has (or should have) one of these in the tool bag. They’re typically used to locate cables you forgot to label, labeled incorrectly, or got cut somewhere during house construction.

Next time you have a dead audio path, you can use the toner to work from the audio source component to the final amp, or use the signal generator from the amp and work backwards to the source.

Since we need to make an adaptor for the alligator clips on the end of the tone generator leads to an RCA stye plug, it’s a easy step to add a simple filter/amplitude reducer to make the tone generator signal more amp/preamp friendly.
