Just like when Nintendo brought back the Gamecube controller for the Wii, Nintendo is also offering the Super Famicom classic controller (Super Famicom – that’s Super Nintendo for US folks) to be used as the classic controller on your Wii for those Virtual Console games. Originally an exclusive only to Club Nintendo members in Japan, a few online retailers like Play-Asia were able to persuade some Japanese Club members to part with their controllers which they then sold as pre-orders to the general public. They’re going for $30, which is only $5 more than the current Wii Classic Controller, a small premium to pay for exclusivity, retro coolness, and nostalgia all in one. Good luck procuring the Super Famicom classic controller though as stock went out as soon as this was announced back in November last year.
However, the classic controller has started shipping and Inside Games put up a few unboxing pics for the general public. I must say it’s is quite underwhelming and looks exactly like… a Super Famicon controller. I guess hoping for a Wii white edition like the revived Gamecube controller would have been asking for too much?
