iPhone AppTapp Review of MxTube: Saving YouTube Videos

Today’s feature iPhone application is MxTube, the first native YouTube video downloader. With this application, available through the AppTapp installer program that you get when you unlock your iPhone with ZiPhone, you can save any YouTube video to your iPhone to watch at your leisure. Upon installing MxTube, you will get a TV with color stripes icon in your menu. Clicking will take you to the about screen, pictured below:

To start downloading YouTube videos, click on the Search button on the bottom of the application. You will get a search bar up on the top similar to the location bar in Safari. Click on the search bar and type in the video you want to find. For this review, we tried “code retard.” Then click search.

Wow! Looks like someone was actually bored enough to create a video for us! To download a YouTube video, simply click on the video you want to download from the search results. You can scroll down to see more results and go to the next page of results for even more. When you click on a video, you will be prompted to choose the quality of video to download. If you’re using wifi, then select the high quality version. Otherwise if you’re using EDGE, choose the low quality.

While the video downloads, you can check its progress by clicking the Download button on the bottom of the app. When the video completes, click the Video button on the bottom and you will be free to view all your saved YouTube videos. Click on any video to start play. To delete videos, click on the Edit button on the top and then the minus (-) sign to remove.
Our impressions were that MxTube is a very simple application with a singular purpose. It’s useful if you don’t want to watch low grade YouTube videos when you’ve only got EDGE available, or worse, you’re iPhone is unlocked and you aren’t using the data plan. In either case, it’s great to be able to talk to your friend about that hilarious YouTube video you saw the other day, then say “Oh wait, here it is!” and whip out your iPhone (or iTouch) and play the video. MxTube is sometimes unstable, experiencing crashes upon loading the application, upon search, upon video download, and video play. Basically, it could crash at any time. Take heart, just start over and try again, it will eventually work. Despite its instability, your patience will be rewarded with what is at its core a great and useful little application. And if you’re curious what intriguing videos were used to get your attention in the first place, here they are. Enjoy.
By the way the common thing you’ll notice in all these videos is the CARS. We’re car lovers, and we’re sticking to it.
