VirtuaWin Screen 1 VirtuaWin Screen 3

Linux users out there are probably accustomed to the wonderful virtual desktop support in their desktop environments but Windows users don’t get to enjoy this luxury. In my past efforts to Linux-ize Windows, I’ve tried using a few virtual desktop tools before… all of which get immediately uninstalled by the next day. If you’re familiar with Power Toys, there’s a virtual desktop tool that you can use, but it’s super buggy and just isn’t very slick. I’ve also tried the virtual desktop tool that came with my ATI graphics card software, and it screws your taskbar order, as well as the application ordering on the screen. Neither of these virtual desktop tools have the seamless integration found in GNOME or KDE. Read more »

Fix Windows XP Shut Down

Windows XP Shutdown

In an earlier post we discussed a few registry hacks to speed up your Windows shutdown sequence. Today we’re going to talk about how to fix Windows XP if your shutdown is broken. If this has ever happened to you, it’s because some programs don’t release their Windows registry connections when you log off, causing the shutdown time to increase and sometimes causing problems when you try to log on to a different machine on the same network. There’s a great free program called User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (it will require you to validate your Windows copy) that fixes these problems. Read more »

To keep the introduction short, Microsoft denies that booting Windows off a USB drive works.

See this page for example. It says:

Q: Can a USB storage device be the primary (and only) means of storage?
No. USB-based mass storage devices cannot be the primary hard disk storage solution on a regular system … Read more »

PSP 3000 Series icon discovered on PlayStation website could be hitning at a new PSP release? In an online instrion manual, SCE (Sony Computer Enterainment) displayed a few icons and now has a curious placeholder for the PSP-3000 series. We heard a while back that there were already hits of a new hardware inside the patches in the current firmware. This image just further adds to the news that a PSP-3000 may be heading our way soon…?

Hacking Made Easy: The Pre-modded Nintendo Wii DVD-ROM

/* Posted March 28th, 2008 at 9:58am [Comments: 2] */
/* Filed under Hardware, Mods, Nintendo, Wii */

Wii DVD-ROM Replacement Drive
This Wii mod seems to be the easiest that I’ve seen. Even though WiiKey install is pretty darn simple with its quick solder points, you still need a soldering iron, the correct solder points, and some soldering experience… no problem if you’ve done this before, a major one if not. Well, consolesource.com is now selling a pre-modified Wii drive so modding your Wii is a simple matter of swapping out the original. All you’d need to find are some instructions on opening up your Wii and some tools. No soldering iron, no modding experience necessary. Read more »

Vista crashes, but NVIDIA responsible almost 30% of the time?

/* Posted March 28th, 2008 at 9:39am [Comments: none] */
/* Filed under Microsoft, Windows */

vistacrash-11.jpg

Documents from the Vista-capable lawsuit show that NVIDIA responsible for 28.8% or over 479,000 of all reported Vista crashes.

NVIDIA had significant problems when it came time to transition its shiny, new G80 architecture from Windows XP to Windows Vista. The company’s first G80-compatible Vista driver ended up being delayed from December to the end of January, and even then was available only as a beta download. In this case, full compatibility and stability did not come quickly, and the Internet is scattered with reports detailing graphics driver issues when using G80 processors for the entirely of 2007. There was always a question, however, of whether or not the problems were really that bad, or if reporting bias was painting a more negative picture of the current situation than what was actually occurring.
