pc vs mac

We here at Code Retard just got a few Macs in for development. We are all big PC guys and have run into some “interesting” issues. Below is a running list of lame issues we have run into while using the “EASY” to use Macs…

CTRL + anything in windows is now COMMAND + anything….

If you are a big pc guy, you will need to move that common crtl button hitting figure a little more in to remember to hit the “open apple” key when trying to do short cuts.

Plugging in NTFS hard drives into the Mac.

The item “XXXXX” could not be moved because “XXXXXXX” cannot be modified.

Problem and solution:

Your hard drive you are using is formated with NTFS, which the mac can read but cannot write to. The solution is to A: Format it was FAT32 or Format it on the Mac. Both solutions are pretty lame.

The Magic Red Light on the headphones jack:

The headphone jack lights red and stays lit. Internal system sound does not work.

Solutions: Stick a toothpick into the headphone jack to toggle the button inside, or stick a headphone jack into the port pretty fast until the light toggles off.

How to turn off “Retard” Mode:

Your system is stuck handy cap mode (how to turn off mac voice)

Problem and Solution:

You are on gmail or some similar site and decide its a good idea to hit the hearing impaired icon. Macs then go into “Retard Mode” and reads everything to you.

The fix is by going to System Pref. => Speech (double left click - single click brings you to another menu) => then turn voice over off

When using Safari in Word Press, Safari adds all these weird “apple” tags

The fix that we found for this problem: Download Firefox!

How do I Create a Screenshot on Mac OS

* Apple (Command) Key +Shift+3

Captures entire desktop to a file on the desktop as ‘picture #’ . This option lets you capture the whole screen. If you want just one window on your screen, you will have to edit the picture using image editing software.

* Apple (Command) Key +Shift+4

Allows you to use your mouse to select a specific part of your desktop for capture. This will turn your mouse pointer into a cross, please hold down the mouse button and drag to select the part of the screen you want. When you release the button the screenshot will “snap” that part of the screen.  Press ‘Esc’ to release.

* Apple (Command) Key +Shift+4 then press Spacebar

Allows you to select which window to capture.
