The long anticipated Super Smash Bros. Brawl was recently released, much to the joy and yet also dismay to Wii gamers everywhere. Why the dismay? Those with modded Wii’s found themselves unable to play the game, even with a legal copy! We figured it out in a previous post, but what about those of us too cheap to buy the game? Well we found a solution for you too! Follow the directions below to get a burned copy of SSBB to play on your WiiKey modded Wii using a single layer disc without the extra channels.

First, the requirements:

  • You must already have downloaded an NTSC USA version of SSBB. Save yourself some pain, do not use the PAL Japanese version of the game to do this!!!
  • You have an NTSC USA Wii
  • You have a WiiKey chip installed on your system
  • Your Wii firmware is 3.2U (update this from the Internet). Note that this firmware is safe with WiiKey and will work with SSBB
  • Your WiiKey firmware is 1.9g beta

These instructions will not work unless all the above conditions are met. If you’re still with me so far, then we shall proceed:

  1. Burn the ISO on a good quality single layer DVD-R at 4x speed as you’ve done for your other games many times
  2. Burn a second copy of the ISO, but this time use Wii Brick Blocker on the ISO before burning the disc
  3. Put the first disc you burned (the unmodified un-brick blocked one) in your Wii
  4. Your Wii will force you to proceed with an update when you load the game
  5. Accept the update and watch the progress bar’s meter carefully until it gets to 10-15%
  6. At 10-15% completion (and there will be a pause so you know you’ve hit it), pull the power plug from your Wii. The power plug is located at the back of the unit. What this does is prevent the duplicate channels from getting added.
  7. Plug the power back and turn on the Wii
  8. Now put the second disc you burned (the modified brick blocked one) in your Wii
  9. Load the game up and you’re good to go!

As always, we are not responsible if you brick your Wii following the directions above. Nobody made you do it. =)

Hi. Will this process work with the d2pro chip too? Please relpy back soon !

I think but cannot say for sure that the important thing here is that your D2Pro modchip is updated to a firmware that supports SSBB. However, these steps have only been tested with WiiKey so I advise you confirm these steps against other sources.

    Hey Guys,

Just a quick one… I burned this the other day and got it working without any problems, but I am wondering is it safe to play a copied version of this game online? Or should I just go out and buy it if I am looking to do that?
