No Blu-Ray
Yesterday Microsoft XBOX 360 product manager Aaron Greenberg announced that Microsoft was not in talks with Sony to support the Blu-Ray video format, which recently beat out HD-DVD in the next-gen video war when Toshiba threw in the towel. Microsoft’s Bill Gates sided originally with HD-DVD early in the format war as their next-gen gaming console was the first out among the three major players - Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Knowing that the war was lost, Microsoft also stopped producing the HD-DVD drive add-on for the XBOX last month after Toshiba made the announcement that it would no longer produce HD-DVD players or support the format. Toshiba is estimated to lose about $1 billion this year for backing the losing format. There are no figures for Microsoft’s loss, but the XBOX has been outsold by the PS3 two months in a row now. XBOX 360 owners who still want to watch high definition movies need not fear, as the XBOX Live service is still offering downloadable high definition content.

I thought I remembered a Microsoft employee saying that it was possible that they might look into a Blu-ray player for the 360 but in the end it makes sense that they wouldn’t as it would indirectly be helping the competition.
