Asustek’s wildly successful ultra-portable laptop, dubbed “EeePC”, is selling out faster than the PC maker can supply them. The Linux-powered laptop sports a 7″ LCD, 700Mhz processor, wi-fi, and 2GB or 4GB solid state hard drives at affordable sub-$400 prices. Since the EeePC’s initial release, the customized Linux OS has received generally favorable reviews and the consensus is that for it’s purpose as a “second laptop”, the EeePC does an excellent job. Designed for the user who just wants to get on the net to surf, check email, or chat, the EeePC is not tricked out with crazy hardware or filled with bloated software. It’s a streamlined straight-to-the-point piece of machinery, and it’s exactly how people want it.
Asus cited the problems with the laptop battery supply as the anticipated cause of the shortage. Like Nintendo and their Wii, the these guys just can’t pump enough volume to meet consumer demand. Riding on the coattails of the 7″ EeePC’s success, Asus is also planning to release a 9″ version soon which will support Windows XP as well as Linux. This bigger screened laptop will boast a 8GB solid state drive among the new hardware improvements. Asus is eager to release the 9-incher as they estimate that the Windows XP version will outsell its Linux counterpart by “6 to 4.” Why not 3 to 2? I do not know. At any rate, if you have been wanting one of these for a while (like me), you better snatch one up before the supply tightens.
